Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

44th on middle, 27th on long and 29th overall, after some drinks-point shenanigans from Kris and Bertie and pull-outs on day 2.
In Jan top-30 was my aim, but with a slightly weaker field and poor performances I'm not counting this as a success. However, felt pretty physically strong (save #13 on the long) and also quick on the Sprint.

Whilst the big cock-ups are still fresh in my mind, I was pleased with some bits of my technique and some splits show I'm moving in the right direction, but I need a lot more practice, something I said I'd do over the winter and didn't really - something to work on in the summer and when I move back to Sheffield.

Running - Trail 8:18 [1] 1.42 km (5:52 / km) +13m 5:36 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Enjoying the wealth of positive features on display from assembly.
Needless to say that, as some sort of cruel joke, Keith and Mark had put my first control in a depression.

Orienteering race (JK Relay, Pwll Du) 31:59 [5] ***** 5.83 km (5:29 / km) +130m 4:56 / km
spiked:15/17c slept:7.5 shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

SL: 4.7/185. Fastest on Gaffle: Welly 31:06 (103%).

Duncan - me - P.B.Ray, fresh from 3 classics in a week.

Set off in 23nd just behind Clyde and WCOC.
Spooned #1 by ~45s, went into the detail too far but got high and saw the kite from a way beyond, but Clyde had only opened his gap up a little bit. Lewis arrived on my shoulder en route to #4. Went swimming out of 6, where we'd snuck ahead of Chris from LOC and spied Jon for FVO. #7 seemed higher up the ridge than anticipated but Lewis dived in and so did I. Let him navigate to #8 before making a break across the bog, finally getting ahead of Jon out of 9. Pulled away from Clyde leaving 10 and 3Roc came through, hung on to his coat-tails round the final loop to hand over in 14th - passed 9 but only saw 4.

Pleased to get a good run out of the weekend eventually!

Orienteering long (JK Long Llangynidr) 2:08:22 [3] ***** 17.0 km (7:33 / km) +390m 6:46 / km
spiked:23/31c slept:8.0 shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Winner: Hector Haines 1:32:56 (138%)

Overshot 1, ended up on the plateau (1min). Got back on track to 2 but then same issues as yesterday on 3 as yesterday: Map fitted then suddenly nothing. Ran from hill-top to hilltop for what seemed like an age. Thankfully I was picked up by Welly and Grassie, otherwise I'd still be out there! (11min). However I then nailed #4, one of the hardest on the course, high line leading the pack in.
Slow and steady through to 9. Dropped Grassie but picked up Josh O'S-H. Well pleased with 9 and pulled away from Welly but then ruined 10. Hit 22 then still ended up too far down the slope, Welly called us back as he retired.
Bit ponderous with a RC decision to 11 so thrashed about in heather for a bit. Ran with/around Josh for the rest of the course, nav split fairly evenly. Straight is great on #13 which had him about turning to follow me.
Fairly clean but slow for the rest of the course. I can race for these times in a fell race, but in an O event I just end up staggering about.

Running - Trail warm up/down 20:00 [1] 3.5 km (5:43 / km) +50m 5:20 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Orienteering race (JK Middle, Merthyr Common) 43:57 intensity: (40:27 @3) + (3:30 @5) ***** 6.7 km (6:34 / km) +130m 5:59 / km
spiked:17/24c shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Winner: Hector Haines 29:15 (150%)

I'd prepared myself to basically jog this and get the nav right. Crossed what I thought was the form-line spur just NW of the circle to #1 then nothing made sense any more. (2.5min). Nothing also fitted at 6 (2:45) or 12 (2min) - these were all longish vaguer legs into areas with little chance of relocation, and I can only point at poor compass work, sometimes early in the leg (1, 12) or from my AP (6. Pretty sure I hit my AP - Rocky knoll/spur) - on all 3 Hugh Cashell (my +2 min man) saved my bacon.

There were also some pretty spectacular bananas (2, 3, 9) again pointing to compass. Got going from 13 onwards and blitzed the last few minutes from #19, somehow pulling 90s back out of Hugh.

Nearly DQ'd for wearing a vest. Apparently this is technically against the law, but the law in this case is an Ass. Start official also radioed finish to ensure Jack Wright's socks had remained up. Sometimes I think people have nothing better to do with themselves.

5 PM

Running - Trail 35:16 [2] 7.4 km (4:46 / km) +222m 4:09 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Trotted up to the Trig. Had intended to go more direct but some angry farm dogs forced me on a longer route.

Aww tits.
Messed up 4 royally (40s) after a good start (no direction/didn't look at map out of 3. Cocky?), then round the houses to 5 (10s).
Mucked up once out of the view of spectators to 8 - went straight on after step and in too early (10s). Good through the Uni but suffered around the enclosure to 16 and a small hesitancy in the circle. OK on the downhill leg to 18 and back into the gardens, but contrived to run off the map and head towards the TrailO instead of heading back into the Uni. Jogged it in from there, got to laugh.

20th when I went wrong, even with the early mistake. Was posting good splits through the uni section but suffered a bit on the uphill bits in the park. I'd pretty much put the map away at 20 as it 'was easy' from then on in. Douche.

Just missed out on a Konging by 7 seconds. Phew!

Running - Road warm up/down 18:59 [1] 3.59 km (5:18 / km) +62m 4:52 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Headed into the park. Saw some good orienteers moving very slowly. Elkington.

Derby with Dave, rocking our new thug-life haircuts. Felt ridiculously good considering the last 10 days or so.

4 PM

Running - Road 32:09 [2] 6.8 km (4:44 / km) +103m 4:24 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: NB580 v2 Red (2)

Another 2h off in the afternoon (I spent all morning watching the EOC relays whilst dragging a 30min spreadsheet out for 3h) so headed home for a kip before running out to football. Unsurprisingly feeling tired.

Other Sport 45:00 [0]

Some passable football today, and a little more effort than normal.
6 PM

Running - Road 19:56 [1] 3.7 km (5:23 / km) +50m 5:03 / km
shoes: NB580 v2 Red (2)

Got a lift into NUL to make the shuffle home shorter
