Note

Cracking middle distance yesterday. I fell right into the planner's (Jan Kockbach) trap of not paying enough attention when we moved from the quick runnable stuff into the lower vis. Legs not moving too well but some signs that I can nav at times. WIthin 150% of a Czech guy. Just.
Rockier long distance today, more hilly than karsty, with RC that I thought only existed in Route to Christmas. 1:15k meant I spent a lot of time hesitating and looking at the map but figured knowing my location was more important than haring off. Legs starting to feel better. Lundanes pulled his finger out today and I was >150%
11 AM

Running - Trail 6:34 [1] 1.0 km (6:36 / km) +60m 5:04 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 265

Orienteering long (Lipica 2: Divaska Jama) 1:58:33 [3] ***** 13.51 km (8:46 / km) +485m 7:26 / km
spiked:17/21c shoes: Mudclaw 265

SL: 11.8(I think)/320m (bollocks!). Winner: Olav Lundanes 75:26 (157%)

A long distance with route choice like I have never experienced. Realised afterwards that bearing then pick up features was probably best most of the time. 1:15k so very hesitant looking at map.
Overshot #1, inauspicious start (2.5min), never nearly knew what was going on to #4, very rocky but saw a Wild Boar. Low route to #6 fiddly, ridge route better. Ultra (too?) safe path to #7 not necessary? Never knew what was going on to #17 - short leg, poor direction. Poor RC contouring round last hill to #18.

Event: Lipica Open

11 AM

Running - Trail warm up/down 27:33 [2] 5.43 km (5:05 / km) +48m 4:52 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 265

Orienteering race (Lipica 1: Dutovlje) 48:08 [3] ***** 7.02 km (6:51 / km) +94m 6:26 / km
spiked:16/24c shoes: Mudclaw 265

SL 5.8/140. Winner: Pavel Kubat 34:43 (139%)

All going well (other than being a bit high to 7) unitl the end of the long leg to 10 where I lost my direction and entered the control from the wrong side. Then stuffed up #11, way north due to poor direction, losing ~3min. Also had poor direction to 13 (45s) and 19. Decission making not great but an OK start to the week.

Long day's travel to Slovenia. JT and I appear to be in a hostel with the Czech junior squad, amongst other members of the trimtex fashion show. Hoping the orienteering family is benevolent and will let us hitch to the events. A lot of snow crash in the forests about Postojna, hoping the areas, being closer to the coast, aren't as affected otherwise it could be a rough week!

Out and about Postojna with JT. Couldn't get into woods because of the destruction after the ice storms. GPS bollocks until the 1km mark - we started where we finished.

Whenever I've mentioned 'John' in this log over the last 5 months or so, it refers to this guy.

Anyway, as I missed last night's session (6x1200) I decided to do something today as legs feeling much better. The rest of me, however, isn't really (I think this cold is still lingering, finding it difficult to smell). Decided on 4 longish reps up Hanley Park (worked out at ~1450m/20m climb). First one 5:02, second in 5:11 and really hurting. Dropped the starting speed on the last 2, trying to maintain form a bit more (though doubt I did) and settled at 5:32 and 5:31, feeling much better. Remaining pains in legs didn't get any worse and I didn't gain any, but only time will tell if this was foolish. As daft as it may seem, I sometimes need to remind myself that 10miles+ of an evening is a pile of piss
