8-mile undulating road/trail race (about 2km of trail/field all told). A cold wind on top of the hill (very close to the sea) resulting in a headwind on the way back.
The start was a surprise, no chat, no countdown, just a hooter.
Pretty soon I settled into the 3rd group with 2 other guys (and apparently the first lady but I didn't know this even though Shaun said she was right on my shoulder!). Stuck with them to 2 miles but the guys pulled away just before the first field section, and I wanted to save something and kept it comfy. Was passed on the next road section, but managed to get dragged up to a New Marske guy who had dropped off the original 2nd group. Had a good battle up the last hill to the beacon then dropped him on the descent. Another guy came with me but pulled away significantly as the road levelled out a bit. In the last 2 miles I was closing in on the Loftus guy who was in our original gruop of 3 and managed to get him about 800m out and hold on for 10th place (out of 310). Pleased considering the wind and tiredness - feeling strong just not got the leg speed at the moment - will need some tips on how to develop it over Feb/March!
Ricky Stevenson won in 40:34, so 2 minutes closer than last weekend!
Route - old school MMR
There's a feeling of having raced hard after races like this/XC that I don't get in fell running, possibly as I'm very aware of having to look after myself in remote areas and the need to conserve energy to get myself back if something goes wrong, even in short races.
