I am starting to feel a bit more like A Runner. Hopefully the imminent fizzling out of subconscious thesis stress will let me get to sleep properly soon as well!

Steady hills in and around RIvelin. Gladstone, Stannington, Coppice lane and track (from packhorse bridge). Tired a bit on the coppices but ground through OK.

Will Neill's wedding run to shake off a thick head. Rain, wind and mist - I felt the best I have in a long while! Lud's swimming pol and the Roaches with Will, Rich Roberts and some of the Stoke AC guys including Dave Sheldon, catching up with the bride's group a couple of times. Good fun leaving the road/trackies over the roaches.

Yes
"Just they look very small"
They were in fact just far away in a real life father ted moment

Win, Lose, Crookestone and the breasts, with Josh and Pete D. Pete got stronger up the hills as I got weaker. It's noticeable how hard I'm finding it to get into a good cruise on flat at the moment - running along the road at the end 4:30s felt like hard work.

It's a bit boring but often the though of slogging over Sandygate to Rivelin is a bit too much.

Into Rivelin with Craig. He started half-wheeling me up Gladstone road but rather hubristically had his dinner repeat on him once in the valley so came home solo. 5x12s strides and some new paths up around Hallam.

I keep thinking I should do some faster stuff bit can't really be arsed at the moment.

Holme Moss. 2nd to Karl Gray (albeit 10.5 mins back)

Lovely and sunny at the cricket club but a bank of cloud from Holme Moss down into Crowden provided lovely running conditions and some reduced visibility. Time to build a bit of consistency and confidence, main aim to get a good day in the legs before Borrowdale.

Followed Karl to the first drop but then he eased away to Holme Moss. A totley lad (Sam Allin) was between us, with a Glossopdale on my shoulder. Put a bit of effort once into the mist to drop Glossop and caught Sam when he choked in the mist and ran back towards me. He had no clue where he was so I dragged him over some rough lines into Crowden Brook and up to laddow warming to the sneaky racing I like. Made a concerted effort to gap him on the flags to Black Hill and ran this well, but it didn't feel like I could find the fast cruisey gear I can normally churn out at this point - bit of strength missing at moment.

Made a hash of the descent from Holme Moss, dropped too low in a trod missing the flagged trod, so had to hack around eventually regaining the flagged bit. Karl did the same (so missed his record!) and so (thankfully) did the totley guy as I was not in the mood for a race up and down the last hill. Rich Robinson pulled through to 3rd 4mins back.

Generally pleasing after last few weeks. Bit too soon to Borrowdale to really get going but we'll see. Very dry fast conditions, only about 1min quicker than 2016 which was wet underfoot but I didn't get lost, so really only about 4 mins quicker. Good team performance with Chris 8th and Paul 9th for the team prize (over CVFR 1, 10, 11), ably backed up by Hulleymonster in 12th.

Hannah was doing the Inglebuggar mountain race so I had a jog up and down. Teamed up with some Barlick types to keep the effort a bit more honest on the way up.

Little Rob leading on way up, Josh Boyle at the finish (rob close 3rd). Top of descent is rocky innit.

Mycroft moaning about 'the hill'
It wasn't a hill but I managed to put a gap on people 'up' it in the race. Purely psycological.

Running - Road race 16:26 [5] 5.0 km (3:17 / km)
shoes: NB Vazee Rush

Donny 5km.

A new PB after feeling off for 6 weeks and no specific training save the odd stride. I suppose I can't be too miffed though it shows how weak my distance PBs are. However I think I'd rather be in the hills at the moment than pushing for times - might save that for the winter and next spring.

Felt alright, lost a group after a km and a bit so in a bit of no-mans land. A couple came past and eased away including Bronwen Owen who finished just ahead, but I picked a couple off in the last km, including the usual Tom Halloway 'scalp'.

Mms in 3.10, 15, 18, 27, 14. At least only 1 dropped really low but quite a difference!

'We're now in a holding pattern as fog has descended at Ronaldsway airport'
First thought: hello, fog! Then 'oh maybe won't make the race'
1h later than planned manage to catch all the right busses to have 45 mins to prepare myself. James App and Karl Grey were on the same plane as me (not that I knew, JApp was sat opposite me!), they took a cab.

Running - Trail race 1:29:21 [4] 13.61 km (6:34 / km) +1202m 4:33 / km
shoes: Xtalon 212 #9 (GtWhernside'17)

Kate Burge Sea to Summit. English Champs. 29th.

Got no poke, everyone eased away about half way up the first hill and that was that sorted - I remained in stasis at all the checkpoints in 28/29th position. Mike Fanning came past up the penultimate climb to make it 4 codgers ahead of me - nearly got taken by Spyke to make it 5 ahead but just about kept moving up to Snaefell.

At least it was a nice day, I'd love to spend a bit more time on the IoM, some good hills, ridgelines, cycling and the sea to go at.

Muscles felt OK generally after yesterday, though R piriformis got a bit sore later on. Hammy still a bit tender.

Morning flexibility, R glute and hammy/calf a bit tight.

Science and football (and the Tour, but I misjudged that) dictated I needed to run now.
10T in Weston Park. 4 loops came out at ~2:24, 21, 22, 19, averaging 3:50. Felt good but would like to have been a bit quicker.
Then 4x ~1:15 hills (~350m/20m) in Ponderosa. 1:14, 21, 19, 24. Bit tired for this bit.

Hathersage Gala 5th. +2 mins on Ben Hague (Rotherham), Dan Heywood and Steve Franklin, 40s behind Billy Cartwright.
Time to pull my finger out after the last month or so. Slightly different course, bit longer than normal if a bit less climb (though AP says different). Pleased to go OK though suffered a bit between 5-15mins up to Higgar before we started going downhill again. 1.20 or so quicker than in tempest, reckon changes save at least 30s if not a little more.

Have decided I am going to the IOM this weekend.

Saunders day 2.

A start along Langstrath and we could see 3rd place above us on the climb to #2. A hearty plod up here and around Ulscarf and we had caught and passed them with a mega bearing to #4. Aborted lamb first-aid (it was pretty much dead, nothing else we could do) gave some relief to the churn that was #6, across Wythburn and Easedale to Tarn Crag, before the run in along Swirl How. Leaving the penultimate control I saw a pair that might be the guys who lead overnight. Reaching the finish it turned out they were and we had leapfrogged into 2nd, within 2 minutes of the winners. Won the day by 20 minutes, Hannah's first ever win!

An enjoyable weekend and pleased to be so competitive. Very proud and impressed with Hannah's ability to put up with my rough lines and uncomfy sleeping arrangements but most of all to keep slogging on at a fair pace without grumble (audible at least!). Trying to get a future pass out to do a Klets may now prove difficult!

Developed bad hayfever reaction Sat night, was OK when running but came back on straight away and very bad sunday evening. Often get this once a year, heat probably exacerbating it. Managed quite well in the heat though considering.
