Note

Travel back. Long gap between trains in London so went for beers with Teesside housemate.

Before I can work on my navigation I need to learn how to run in terrain, as I just can't look at the map.

Time to start doing some more specific training working towards getting used to running fast again.

Note

Orienteering like a novice
Running like bambi
Sleeping like a prisoner on his first day inside
Hearing out of my left ear like my dad
Eating pancakes and drinking Pivo (£1.20 a pint) like a boss.

DNFd a course yesterday (after a nice 20min headscratcher), current pattern is one every 2 years (but the last had 100 controls)
But in orienteering there's always a chink of light at the end of the tunnel, one little thing to grasp hold of something to make you come back next time. Orienteering: Class A. Roll on the Lakes5!

Off to Croatia/Slovenia. See people at Lakes hopefully.
Simon 'Mr Helium' Coldrick's Sandy Heys best is a ridiculous 9:38. I reckon Lloyd has done similar/quicker. REALLY puts my 12:04 to shame!

Out to Glossop to pick up train tickets (2 stations but no collection machine in New Mills...), back over to Chinley but punctured (thorn) half way up the last climb so sent up the bat signal for mum to come and pick me up...
Blustery out. I must be a cyclist now as I had my first 'overtaken by a car that immediately turns right' incident. Thankfully uphill so could react.

5.5h hardcore weeding, then over to Sheffield to sort out paperwork for my new gaff - Findon Street in Hillsborough. The return is getting more real!

Running - Trail race 31:50 [5] 7.2 km (4:25 / km) +304m 3:39 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Bamford Carnival. Winner: Aiden 30:20 (105%)

Felt good and comfortable up the climb. However was surprised when Austin Frost appeared as we hit the contour. I then realised that I'd let some people get away and that I maybe should have pushed on at some points on the way up - I think I was consciously leaving something for the descent. The last climb up to the summit was harder than it should have been with too much walking. Hot the summit ~1:50 down on OJ.
Got past 3 on the initial downhill to the fell gate. Then onto the fast running I didn't have my normal ease, working harder than I'd like to maintain the short gap behind me - caught a few glimpses of the pair up ahead but they never got closer, not something I'm used to.
Finished 15s slower than 2011, Not great when you look at it but felt better than last monday and the sharpness will come. The mental willing ness to push on will need to be worked on and some painful training will hopefully aid it.
Finished ~1min behind OJ. Pretty sure in when I'm kicking I'll be getting around a minute quicker on these kind of things. (ftr Oli was tired so not expecting to be with him!)

Note
slept:8.0 weight:75.2kg (rest day)

Given that I'm a 'full time athlete' at the moment I'm loath to take some time off, but I think I need to.
Initial plan had been Brecon Fans race weekend, followed by a week in Snowdonia. However I really need to find a house in Sheffield next week. Was going to race in the peaks this weekend but I'll stay put listening to the cricket and watching the tour. It's too warm to do anything anyway...

24km
Had for some reason ordered holiday money from Glossop. So rode out to collect my big Kunas. Effort coming back over Chunal, hit the flatter section, flicked onto the big ring and chain came off. Bugger. Had to re-catch the mamil I'd just blitzed through.
Then tried to big-ring the start of Sitch Lane. Not a great idea.
6 PM

Running - Trail 1:34:32 [1] 15.86 km (5:58 / km) +404m 5:17 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Well this was a mistake.
Felt rubbish, and compounded it by picking a 'lets see if that route that was shit 3 years ago is still shit' route. It was. Disappearing paths through rough grassy fields - my already well defined sock tan has been enhanced, albeit only by blotchyness caused by my immune system's dislike of grass pollen.

Pennine's Trans-Pennine Mini Handicap Relay. Last leg with Truck, Mark and Sir Roger of Ashby. Out in 5th, just ahead of Steve, back in 3rd a similar distance ahead.
A bit quicker than intended at the start so couldn't power on up to Mount Famine as I wanted.

Tuesday Jul 8, 2014 #

Note

Dropped evening run, doing a lot of sleeping and could maybe do with a more rest day after last week.
Currntly in a 4-way tie for 51st in the English Champs with Malley, Spyke and WillyG. I'm the only one needing all 3 scores though. Work to do if I want my pre-season aim of a top-30.

shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

Winner: Little Rob 30:19 (106%)
Last 3 races have been SIPR, Jura and Ennerdale. This was tough after the last few weeks! Just outside the top10 I think, but a little quicker than 2011 (although despite turning autopause off Garmin still stopped 3 times...). Closed a lot down on the descent from Higgar, but they all pulled away on the drag up from the road, meaning no grandstand finish with Nails, Spyke or Jonny.
I'll take this all things considered.

Running - Road warm up/down 11:55 [1] 1.74 km (6:50 / km) +65m 5:46 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (4 - 2014)

plod about with Neil, both complaining about how we haven't had to do anything like that since Pendle 3 month back.

Back from Holme Moss. Busy. Ride from Woodhead to Glossop not very nice, road packed like what I'd imagine a Sportive to be like.

Time to be a runner again.

52km.

Forerunner 220 fancy!
Whaley, Goyt Valley, Buxton Brewery Tap for pork and ale. Back over Long Hill and a fallen tree in Whaley. Bit breezy in places. Back before the rain win.

Thursday Jul 3, 2014 #

9 AM

Bike 4:15:00 [2] +2000m
slept:7.5 weight:74.6kg shoes: CB Team

101.8km.
Snake and Holme Moss. Spent some time looking at Ash's bum, some at Tom's and some at both together. Cycling is odd. Mizzly out - Belkin and AG2R didn't look overly impressed when we saw them Ewden way. Ash and Tom ahead of me on the drag up Snake. Lunch at the dotty cafe in Langsett. Legs felt rubbish after the stop, but went well Holme Moss and Chunal on the way back.

GPS trace is Ash's (alt is wrong between Glossop and Langsett as rain affected altimeter).

Bike Wanking with Ash and Tom, and New Mills's newest resident Bedders until Hayfield. Introduced the lads to Peaks hills, Over to Marple Bridge, Chapel Brow, Hayfield, around Eccles Pike and back over Disley. Feeling good.

Borrowed Ash's Garmin - hence all HR data is his. When there is no data it's because I'd sent him out the back.
5 PM

Running - Road 26:14 intensity: (4:14 @2) + (22:00 @3) 5.76 km (4:33 / km) +92m 4:13 / km

Tuesday Jul 1, 2014 #

5 PM

Running - Trail 1:18:00 intensity: (56:50 @2) + (11:30 @3) + (9:40 @4) 16.1 km (4:51 / km) +438m 4:16 / km
slept:8.5 weight:74.4kg shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Getting a run in before the Bike Wankers arrive tomorrow. Lantern Pike, Chunal, Chad's Cabin. Got rained on but top was already off, so it was very steamy when I got back into New Mills.
Some effort up LP (3) and from Carr Meadow (4), which saw me bag 2 KOMs with significant margins from Mark (who I garden with).

Garmin seems a bit bolloxed - not charging and kept randomly stopping on the way back along the trail. Probably time for a new one.
