Nice longish one. Squeezed quite a lot of climb in early in then sauntered around the last 9k or so. Wiggling about up to Roseberry (including a gander at The Chute - even more eroded!), Little Roseberry, Hanging stone, along then to the bottom of the woods so I could take in the full Grunt climb to Highcliff nab. Had rather battered twix here and decided to complete the whole of the longest planned route, so around/over Codhill, through Gribdale and Captain Cooks. Nice run, didn't feel great on the early climbs but kept going.

2.9km @ 3:57 m/k
jog out to the crispy loop. Planned session was 2x2mile @10k pace. However they were lacking marshals for the junior handicap so I stood in before carrying on when the marshals actually arrived, so I did the last 'mile' of the 1st rep, long rec (9min) then did the 2nd 2mile rep before jog back.
1.76km then 3.54km both @3:28 - the 2nd was more controlled, 1st one went off a bit daft. Scott running well on the 2nd to keep me honest.

1st. Gun to tape. More a trail race, but a nice bit across the moor along the grouse butts (still a good dry path though). Very little descent in this race.

Paul Butler (night shift) and Cam (recovering from Leeds fest) weren't in evidence so I backed myself for the win - depending on how my legs were feeling from the weekend. Ian McGrath (running well) and Dan Middlemass were there to keep me honest though.
Comfortable tempo out to the bottom of Ingleby Incline, then a good steady pace up it (9.10) as it sounded like Ian was dropping back a little. Onto the flat I kept going and picked out the cut from (the unflagged) CP2 to the track. Got a bit lazy here and, whilst still moving on OK, Ian was right on my heels at the trig point. Scorched earth from then on as I opened up ~30 second gap over the remaining 2.3km. Pleased I kept going and could put in a decent effort throughout.

Out to Cam's dad to see how he got on in his exams (4xA* so off to Oxford. As expected). Then taking in the descent I'd recced but we didn't race and back to the car.

Note

Good weekend of short races, pretty paggered now though. Quite pleased with my performances but my descending, although still good on short races, is now more of a weapon on a long descent with plenty of cruisy bits (a la blisco), hopefully a bit more capacity will allow me to really push a bit more once off the summit (quicker recovery from O2 debt)

14th. Winner: Rob Jebb (13:07, 118%)

Understandably tired after yesterday. Went up quite well but had to dog a little bit once onto the easier running track - had a good race up with Noel, a Coniston runner and +1 all the way up, summiting 2 places behind Noel. Then got into my flow on the down taking a couple (inc. Noel) but got stuck behind the Coniston runner going just too slow and I couldn't get past him until we were in the bottom field. Burnt him off then Pete Harrisson just before the road but was just too far behind JackW - we were well matched for speed in the finishing straight anyway.
Maybe should have twisted and taken the R path through the bracken to see if could get past the Coniston guy earlier.

8th. Winner: Simon Bailey (14:10, 111%).

Dug in on the climb - maybe could have been a bit stringer but I'll put that down to the 5km - and hit the climb in 10th with a pack ahead and a gap behind. Scrapped my pre-recced route and took the Ted Masson line that all but the top 2(3) at the top took. Got Jonny Bradshaw on the heather and Andy Swift just before the track (so was first peaks runner) and was closing down Watdog as put the hammer down to stay away from Andy.
Was quite pleased afterwards, but Joe saying he thought I'd catch him makes me think maybe I wasn't as good as I can be on the down. I put this mainly down to not doing a deep heather descent for at least 3 years, and again not completely fresh legs. But most enjoyable!

Went the other way round the upstream tees loop today. Controversial.
Had plans of going up some hills but zonked after work and several short sharp races this weekend to save myself for -although given how drained my legs felt on the 100m, max 8% ramp away from the river tonight I'm holding little hope.

Note

Handed in my notice at work today - I've been offered a slightly more senior, and broader, position at a company in Keele (Stoke) and will start by October. I'm planning on commuting from Leek which is handy for the southern peaks, but anything can happen! Need to sort out running clubs so I can compete in as much XC as I can over winter. As for O club, I don't know. The dearth of M21/35s to make up relay teams could see me stay as CLOK for a bit.

Was going to head to club for a session, but found out off Gav that it was the last in the summer evening 'trail' 5km series at Ropner Park, so headed along. Never been to one of these, good set-up with kids race then the senior race.

3rd. Winner: Wondiye 15:xx (xxx%) New 5km pb by 21 seconds
Splits: 3:18, 19, 19, 25, 09.

Went into this with Chris's advice from after Turner - go out and run really hard for 15min at least once a week. So I did. Wondiye (Ethiopian paralympian) shot off as per, but I sat in 2nd. Had Rosie Smith (Durham City/HBT) on my shoulder for the first couple of laps, thought she was still there but she was replaced by a young lad from Quakers. Felt comfy and went at 4.4km where there's a slight downhill. Got a bit of a gap and with 100 to go could hear the person behind closing so dug in up the ramp at the end of each lap. I went the correct way around the bush, but the lad went straight and got me by a second. The gap wasn't taped and we weren't directed, so told the officials to let the result stand so I believe he didn't mean it. The kid's young and will learn to follow the person in front in future! Reckon I had the sprint on him, but he did fly past me at the end of a 3km earlier in the year.

4th. Winner: Cam Taylor (40:17, 106%).

Christ on a bike, I forgot how fast short runnable races go out at! Paul Butler and young Jack Willis set the pace with me, Ian and Cam in a pack 40m back, until Dan Middlemass slammed through us after a km. Hit the steep climb and went quite well up it - Cam and Jack were away but a shoe-lace had me close enough to Paul. Thought I might gain some ground on Cam on the flat after that, but he's been working on his flat speed and I didn't have much freshness in my legs after the weekend (and yesterday's long day), so was working pretty hard for not great pace, shown by Ian catching me up on the out section (as Paul eased away), but I got ahead on the back and pulled away on the last descent - even had time for the fastest forest dump ever as my guts were in turmoil - all done in about 3 seconds! (was knackered when I arrived after work so maybe ate a bit too much to get my sugars up).

Endurance not too bad, and I can get a bit of speed back (not that my races until the end of Sept really need it.

Out with BMHH as I had to be in work afterwards. Small group but nice to see people as not been for ages, made me realise how stupid (and lazy) I was not getting out, even for just monday runs, when I was feeling tired over the summer, as running with company would have kept me going much better.
Anyway, bit quicker than expected after a few ran well at Darlo 10k yesterday, but a nicer more off-road route than normal. Put in a few faster sections every now and then.

Out with Rhys, Lloyd, Nail, Rob and ToddO. Well, until the gate on Walna scar as the DP guys were a bit too eager this morning. Todd and I went straight up to White Pike on his descent line whilst the others went round a bit. Then recced the Duddon route over to Caw and down to the stile before taking Rob through some of his favourite terrain back to the hut.

32nd. Winner: Simon Bailey 1:22:52 (112.6%)

Legs still felt a little weary from Scotland, but I was feeling much better in the rest of my body than I have for a while.
Steady start on the track up to Seathwaite Tarn with the Pennine grupetto of Dave, Steve and Noel - would normally want to be further ahead of these guys on a runnable stretch but was happy I was taking it steady at the point - Adam and Chris up ahead. Onto the climb to Great Friar, Dave and Tom Bush went ahead but I resolved to keep him in sight, and ToddO was also in view. Off the summit and through the small group I was with before driving on the gradual ascent up to Joss on Swirl Howe.

Reeled Todd in over Brim Fell and got ahead just after the Old Man - so I couldn't follow his line but I could stretch out a bit. Kept plugging up Dow Crag, going through a few others, and kept passing people on the contour down to Walna Scar and across to White Pike. Last descent and Andy Jebb went past me (legs not quite fresh enough to really push the descent), but stuck with him and Tom to pass a few others (including jogging Eddis and Little Rob) before sprinting right through them once into the field.

A really enjoyable route and, once over the first climb it was really fun ridge running. Quite pleased with my run, was aware my legs were a bit limited but managed to keep plugging away - 32nd is my best champs race result by 1 place, and there was no clag here to help me like at Great Lakes last year! (although the field was missing a few due to the GB trial on Sunday) However, it was my first defeat in a Pennine champs race this year - Adam's too strong all over and Chris is very strong up and at least matches me on the flat (but 3 Peaks, Jura and Fairfield are more marque names to have on my palmeres ;).

about with JackW. Had a good chat with Chris Leigh afterwards about training and making a step up, some useful tips to improve my uphill capacity (he thinks I could push towards top 10 in the future. Nowt wrong with being ambitious?) although he suggests forgetting about long stuff. The thing is, I really enjoy long stuff, but I have noticed this year that, as I've focused more on it, the rest of my running has plateaued to some extent. However, having been feeling a bit meh whilst running for a while I'm pleased to still be knocking out semi-respectable results

Decided to take a day off as more tired than I'd like. I've recommenced work on my Thornaby Spitfire map (after about 4 months fallow!), a few clips if you want a giggle at not-completely-square buildings and taking serious liberties with ISSOM:
some_text Base map - need to go out and put point features on the map now (and check all the canopies are in the right place - can be difficult to see them on streetview...)!

However, still a long way to go...
some_text
the sections NE and SE of the central roundabout (the Spitfire roundabout, hence the map name) are also really good, and the town centre SE of the upper roundabout will add a bit of a different challenge. Getting back into the groove now though.

Note

really enjoyed the Scottish, although it's (still) obvious that I need to keep the O going a bit more once the JK/BOCs have been and gone - that said after the debacle of Lossie I snapped back into a better routine quite quickly, still much room for improvement but I'm willing to work on this over the autumn and winter more so than in the past, before hopefully edging up towards where I want to be in the results next spring.

Some biggish decisions to be made over the next 6 weeks or so, but plenty of time to get the work in before LDMT and Edale

Went into this aiming to be clean, hoping that my stamina would pay off and I could make some ground.
Some silly directional errors early on, including wrong crossing to #2 and ending up in the archery place en route to #3 - oops! Had caught Tim Beale (not Ian Beale...!) at 4 but then poor rc/bearing resulted in getting caught in some gorse and I caught him back up at the end of the leg. Lewis and Thingy Omdal had caught me 3 and 2 min respectively (pressumed Ant would be somewhere ahead). Big group got together at 9/10, and used them to keep going on the long leg to 11. However, once we crossed the road and the powerlines they all disapeared, I had a distinct lack of plan wrt getting the control and floundered. Eventually picked up by Galloway and another, then Ben Stevens. Took me mid-way to 12 to catch Rob Kelly back up, so must have lost quite a bit at 11!
Got back onto some sort of train by 15 before putting the boot in to get rid of Hargreves and guy in swiss top, catching Eddie and Lewis at the road crossing. They went neck-deep in a marsh, much to the hilarity of Keith and me and we were together through spectator. Then lost 90sec on #25 - the only nav blunder of the day and Rhys caught me up. Struggled a bit as we ehaded back out - only really keith and Eddie around so lost a bit of impetus. When Spunky appeared (and Rhys reappeared) at 29 there was a bit more impetus and, despite being slow to 30 I got it bang on. Up the hill to 32 I wanted to drive on but Eddie's arse got in the way through the bracken. Cherry, Kalle and Aiden were motoring into 32 but I was happy to bring it home alone, with a knee-slide to finish off the week.

Not too bad, but not great. Leaving the classic to the last day was tough, and I hoped it would play to my strengths a bit more, but it seems planning, execution and concentration aren't my forte when knacked after a hard week!

Today's casualty count: Tied with a Finn, beat a German, a Frenchman who's name I recognise, a couple of Austrians and a lot of Irish

Mmm, Roseisle, you sexy thing.
Nearly ran past #1 but caught 1min on Galloway (who was running in from the opposite direction). Used him to help me find #2 but I didn't have it in the legs to keep up from there. Pretty clean though and picked up DanFR at 6/7, but couldn't pull away - nothing in the legs. Miss on 11 (30s) was the biggest mistake of the day. Jegor came through there and I tried to stick to him a bit but now resigned to not having a bit extra (not that I'd have stuck with him for long anyway). Some chariots of fire stuff down the beach with Harold, a few fluffs at 14 and 19, I pulled away from Dan at one point but he got back on as I slowed again on my own. Once through the open section I really suffered and let Dan do most of the work - but when he and Harold mucked up 29 I was there to pounce and lead them into the finish.

Confidence through 1 and across the road was built upon when I reeled in my 1min Irish National man at 2, getting ahead crossing the river. (He then stayed in my back pocket util spectator). Into the open to 3 we picked up Ian, used him to lead me to the correct lump before pulling away. Fortuitous on #6 where I never saw the small hill I was attacking, but change in levels nearby saw me OK. Chris Heppenstall helped into 8. Ended up a bit high on 10 (30s) but then got my direction all wrong crossing the open leaving it, adding extra rough terrain and climb. Struggled a bit through spectator and a small miss on 13. Got ahead of Irish Lad (has a reputation for following aparently) again through hitting 14 well, but poor bearing out of it, then trying to be to clever into #16 lost me maybe 45s total. Passed by german 3min man on the run into the last control so dug in.
99th/150+. Enjoyable but slight frustration at being close to a good run. Beat a lot of Irish and an Austrian. Nice feeling to drive the train - so I can go at a decent speed on my own Nav!
