would like to have been a little quicker, but was finding it a bit more difficult to breathe deeply than usual, suggests I'm still not on top form so fairly pleased with these times.

Edale Skyline entry in. 2 months to sharpen up. Jan was a good month up until this week, but I think the rest will have done me good. Lots of O lined up in the next few months as well, to break things up at the weekend.

whacked, spent the evening on th sofa asleep, which seemed to perk me up (then amde it difficult to go to sleep properly!).

Running - Road 1:08:31 [3] 15.52 km (4:25 / km) +41m 4:21 / km

HFW. Still feeling a bit tired and achy and had a headwind for most of this, but pleased to have ground it out, picking the pace up a bit at the end.
Just about got back with enough time to turn myself around before chorus.

slept:7.5 shoes: NB580 Blue

Shaking myself out. Posted my Ben Nevis entry then on to check out some bits of Thornaby (yep, still promising), put in an effort on Mitcell Ave to try and reclaim my Strava segment - equalled it (legs a bit heavy here and tightened up towards the end after cramping myself badly on Saturday), then out to the shop and back.
Lesson for the day - don't transport bananas when running.

Snowbashing on Kinder with Dave, Ash, Kris and Ralph. Time includes some arse-in-snow action, but not stubby bottles or cowering.

slept:7.5 shoes: NB580 Blue

Good pace, easy warm-up, 10x400m with similar jog recovery (longer after rep 5), back to club.

66 (oops), 74, 71, 74, 72, 71, 68, 74, 70, 72.
Odds seemed a bit quicker, no reason why as pan flat and no wind.

Felt good. Had Gav on my shoulder for the first 6 or 7, but then he dropped off as I kept the pace about the same. Wasn't easy this mind!

Wednesday Jan 23, 2013 #

Note

must pull my finger out, get a hold of some mapping software and have a bash at Thornaby over spring/summer. Just looked at a satellite pic and it's reminded me!

slept:7.5 shoes: NB580 Blue

Still feeling tired but dragged my carcass out, didn't put in any tempo like I'd vaguely planned, but threw in a few efforts on Strava segments. Was debating a 3rd but a bit leggy after 40mins or so. Despite this still moving well when not pushing it, more so than normal.

Got a ravenous appetite at the moment, getting a lot of use out of the Durham Uni Stockton Campus sports facility toilets. Playing a game of how many of my visits before they put bog brushes in them.

Winter Wonderland with Andy M. Out from Ayton taking in Roseberry, Little Roseberry, Hanging Stone, Highcliffe Nab, the moor and Captain Cook's. Only first prints in a few places so generally not too heavy going. Ready for chips once I finished though!

Well up for a race tomorrow, so even more miffed XC is cancelled!

Icy/Snowy trot around Old Thornaby, Igleby Barwick and the Golden Postbox and New Thornaby. A bit of snow but not much, just about grippy enough but had to be abit careful, which I was after I'd stacked it leaving the car park.
Once again I felt much better after 30mins. Put in an effort to snatch back a Strava segment.

Miffed that Sunday's XC has been cancelled. Oh well, more time to play in the moors.

An Icy HFW with bag. I was going to go a bit more direct, but being unable to cross a busy road (could have awaited I suppose) pushed me out West. Glad it did as I started feeling better and made it up to 10mile and took in my favourite road in Stockton - Rimswell Avenue.
Opted out of intervals as imagine it wouldn't be any use on the ice (generally OK on the way back, a few hundred necky metres). Need to start putting sessions and progression runs back n the agenda from next week.

SL: 4.6km/135m. Winner: Kris Smith 39:22 (101%)
MLN event on the Durham Uni map - glad I'm on the UDOC mailing list otherwise this would have passed me by!
Last time I was here it was muddy as, this time it was really nice and solid underfoot - generally. Pleased with most of this, a few time losses courtesy of impenetrable holly bushes, but this also provided some relocation practise. One case of being by the kite but not seeing it (#1 in a lit area, it didn't pop out like the rest, 1 min scratching head before I saw it by the bench after I was looking by a dovecote), and one loosing too much height (poor direction out of control) at #11.
Pete caught e at a couple of points, but managed to pull away over the last 5 controls.
Felt good and like I've shaken the post easy-week fugg.

Thrashed 'Candle' Bray by an entire whole complete second. That's relay pecking order sorted then ;). Kris Smith about 20 seconds ahead.

Used touch Emit for the first time. Nice.

Running - Trail 17:34 [2] 3.32 km (5:17 / km) +80m 4:43 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

trotted around the woods to get time up. Had another look at #11 (without compass) and still ended up too low. Last time I ran here was the start of my March Knee-problems last year, shouldn't be a repeat this time!

Straight Line:10.7km/255m. Winner: Crickmore. Time 81:38 (129%). Map to follow.
Oh dear, this wasn't great. I managed to shake myself out on the jog to the start but then got mauled by tussocks, marsh and shoddy bearings for the first 65mins, tired myself out, then staggered about the slopes for the remaining 40 minutes not really looking at my map, let alone interpreting it - a shame as I was looking forward to this bit, but as it turned out the terrain pushed me so far off line execution was never going to be easy.

Lesson for the day: Just because it's pale yellow and marshy doesn't mean it's good running, especially in the peak! All too often I was expending a lot of energy when there was better running just off-line.

On the few times I got my arse in gear I was in touch on the splits, and even feeling pants I just snuck in under the 130%, so a couple of positives. Got a lot of O planned over the next 2 months so should get my eye in by the time JK/S&Ms roll around.

It's weird how an easy week can leave you feeling worn out more at the end of it!

Running - Road 9:04 [1] 1.57 km (5:48 / km)
shoes: Mudclaw 333 (4)

jog down the hill. Even with gravity, I had to take a sit down as I was feeling proper odd - I don't think I got eating right this AM, nor sleep right all week! Also, whilst a few pints may loosen your legs off in the evening, they're even heavier the next morning. As such, Nic's Top Tip for today is: Foamy Roller, not Foamy Ale!

A warm-up with Gav, then the parkrun in 17:04. Legs weren't with it today after Thursday's fast tempo and leg exercises, sat at a comfy 17min pace for the first 3km, then Gav, who'd been sat on my shoulder, eased away and I didn't have an answer today. A better time would have been nice, but it's not about 5km races at the moment! It's still nice to know I can feel rubbish and be within 11 seconds of my PB.
Then a larger loop warmdown.

Good to see Gav hit a big new PB (sub-16:50 from 17:06) ahead of his half marathon next weekend, and I'll take it as an assist as I paced him for the first 3km. Need to keep reminding myself that my time will come in the summer!

Went for an illegal tour of Beeley, which was dark and Brambley, on my BUSA08 relays map. Headtorch great, and some bits of nav were OK. Just need to remember to get straight onto a path if I'm going to, and not needlessly fanny about in terrain

Greenwood with Phil, then out for 3mile tempo in an Team Pursuit group with Gav, AndyD and PaulL. Averaged 3:34min/km - aiming for 6min/mile (3:45) and JD suggests 3:38min/km is my tempo pace. First 2 miles fine, last one a bit more effort but still OK, but the surges needed to get to the front of the group weren't too far off what I do 500 out from a finishline.

Club still not decided what they're doing with fees as the EA registration increases. As last year's covers me to April, I may not bother registering with EA if I'm planning on going somewhere a bit more interesting later in the year.

Gav and I planning an assault on our respective PBs at Parkrun on Saturday.

Anyone fancy some NightO training in Sheffield on Saturday evening? (down for the Big Moor event). Thinking IlegalBeeley/Wharnecliffe/Treeton/Loxley, happy to pan if someone sends me a map file (but I can't print)

Note

that's the end of my Christmas 'training camp' and a good 8 weeks of base mileage. A week easy to get back into work (boo!) then time to start introducing some intervals and shit. Also filled my gogole calendar up with red blobs, so lots of O going on (blue blobs are fell races - a few of them as well!) before the JK and British. I need to get out in the dark a few times before Tankersley mind, but this shouldn't be as much of a problem as it used to with my new head-sun! Should also make solo training on the moors much easier.

Running - Trail 1:06:46 [2] 13.25 km (5:02 / km) +309m 4:31 / km

Out and about watching/clearing tape at the Clay Bank East race. First time I've helped at a fell race since Summer '11 and I really enjoyed it, although I'd much rather have been racing with a good competitive field out - top 3 of a Pickering lad, Supersaint and Cam finishing close (I'm lead to believe), with Paul, Ian Mc, AndyB etc. all knocking about as well. As it was ribs stopped me from racing, and the way my legs felt pootling about I wouldn't have been much cop anyway.
Watched the start then trotted up to the trig to take some photos, then looped back around the course to clear any remaining tape (and some extra rubbish - plenty of time faffing around with tape). Pretty claggy for the runners, I got the best views before and after they were at the Trig.

Here we go then, back on Teesside, man it's flat and 30mins running solo feels like an hour!
Ribs/Chest didn't feel great. I was breathing quite shallow so as to not aggravate it, and tensing my shoulders somewhat. As a consequence I kept having to yawn to get more oxygen in (yawning is less comfortable), got a small stitch due to lack of oxygen, and tensed my shoulders so they now hurt as well! I'll drug myself up tomorrow, see if that helps at all. I've hit my 90km/week average for the last 4 weeks, so whilst it'd be nice to push for the 100km I'm happy to chill out a bit now.

Edale Skyline (Mam Nick onwards) recce with the CVFR guys who were down - Mounsey, Karl Gray, Gav and Timbo Baggins. I was planning on heading to Manor Park for some sprintO, but a tweet by Ben changed my plans. Dreich weather meant we dived off the path a fence too early (marshalls there on day though) and were a bit low of the line to begin with on Brown Knoll, but eventually picked up a trod better than the line I usually take. Played it safe going through the Wollpacks - need a better day to look at that line as I'm still not comfortable with it, but managed to nail the line across the outcrop from the top of Grindsbrook. Staggering a bit on the way back up to Mam Nick when the others were racing each other!

Very disappointed that the section from the path to Grindslow Knoll has a dirty great paved track now. I still reckon my higher line is good, but it won't gain as much (if any) time on those that go more direct, as they won't get bogged down anymore.

Also tried a new line off Ringing Roger. There was great debate about the down-and-up, but it was decided to leave that recce for a sunny day!

Managed to go balls deep on Brown Knoll, good job I had people to pull me out! However I was pulled out by my right arm which has aggravated some rib pain around my right pec (or where my right pec would be if I had one), which started when I landed on it when falling over on Sunday - thinking intercostal pull, but potential bruised rib. Hurts more now when I move than it did at the time, and I imagine heavy breathing in a race might be sore, but I'll find out on Sunday!

Good day out.

Note

2012
Started pretty shitty. I don't remember much, but I do remember performing badly in a NYM race and sitting on the boot of the car wondering what the fuck I was doing. I was in a similar frame of mind at Lad's Leap, and the knee niggle that kept me out of Edale Skyline was a blessing in disguise as I got my head sorted out. 5km PB of 16:53 in Feb.
Spring-summer was great fun. Coledale showed I was heading in the right direction. O wasn't great at JK, but pleased with my run at the British. Half Marathon off little training so good to be so close to 80mins. Great Lakes Run was torrential and apocalyptic, but such great fun and a top-30 finish was on the cards before someone directed me upstream to use a bridge. Still can't complain at 33rd. A bit O'd out in Tallinn.
On to SLMM, Wasdale, Borrowdale etc., had a great time and OK results, but it's the former that matters most. I was doing very little in the week to try and recover for big weekends. A couple of 10kms at the back of the summer (36:20; 35:43), hoping for sub-35 but wasn't going to happen with all the long stuff I was doing. Weasdale OK but should have been in the top 50 easily (act. 54th) - same prob with 10kms.
Into the Autumn/Winter. OMM was good but fucked up royally at end of Day 1. Pleased with 4-5hr strength. 26th at NE XC champs, Wansfell result great, just need to get better over the time interval between 22mins and 120mins! Now into my 8th (and last) week of what I'm calling a 'base phase', pleased with mileage, how I'm running and how I'm feeling.

Best Runs: Great Lakes (champs, 33rd), Mountain Trial (8th), Wansfell (4th)
Best O races: High Rigg Gallopen (won), British Long (16th)
Times:
800m: 2:13. Mile: 4:59. 5km: 16:53. 10km: 35:43. 1/2Mara: 80:08 (all PBs)

2013
Early year running aims: National XC (end Feb); Edale Skyline (Large Target - end March, Sub 3hrs); Three Peaks (Biggest Target - end April, def sub 3:30, sub 3:20? if conditions nice) - then on to the champs races (sub 4:30 at Wasdale).
O aims - keep improving! More training to come over Jan-Mar, but I'd like to get closer to the leaders (135%) and try and transfer my open fell 'success' into the forest, and maybe run a middle distance race I'm happy with and don't royally fuck up - British Middles is on Stanton Moor, which I count as genesis for my O 'career' (BUSA 2008) so a good run there would be nice.
I'd also like to run Jukola, so anyone who could point me in the direction of a run and logistics, it would be much appreciated!
I'll focus more on Track/Road times post-6 Days.
Target times: 5km: 16:30. 10km: sub-35. 10mile: how far below 60 can I get.

Most of all - have fun.

There's no such word as Can't
