slept:7.0 shoes: NB580 Blue

Honest pace. Felt easy for the first 37mins, if not overly comfortable. Not quite so easy on the way home. Curry reared its head as I hit the Durham sports complex - timing!

slept:9.0 (rest day)

Last night I fell asleep.
Today I went for a curry.

back home to the OMM bumf on the doormat. Will hopefully focus the mind. That and the creche I'm competing against.

Golden Postbox loop.

Note

only just noticed the 'kilometers by activity' bar-graph at the bottom of the page. Been hoping one of these turned up for a while, Cheers Ken!)

Orienteering race (White Rose Team Score) 39:34 [3] *** 6.39 km (6:11 / km) +86m 5:48 / km
spiked:12/15c shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

Team Punter with SLUDO and Beech. I was given the leg involving the most running, but picked up some extra controls I didn't need to, just to be on the safe side. Andy and I timed it to perfection, arriving with each other. Josh wasn't too far behind although he had cut across the OOB field and missed done of the compulsory controls. Oops. Shame as we were first back by a long chalk.

Good weekend, pleased to have dusted off the skills so quickly after getting a bit stale in the 2nd half of the week in Tallinn. Would like to have been closer to Mal et al, especially on the Sunday, but both days have given me confidence to start pushing a little bit harder over the winter.
Also, proper sleep and less alcohol should help performances going forwards.

Running - Road warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.75 km (5:43 / km) +34m 5:12 / km
shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

Orienteering race (White Rose Day 2) 1:17:57 [3] **** 9.3 km (8:23 / km) +269m 7:19 / km
spiked:20/29c shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

SL: 8.4km/285m
Again similar to yesterday - only I was out early making tracks. A bit less hesitant today (although still to some degree so), but a bit more of a fanny through the greener bits of forest (i.e. to 4, 11). Dropped too low to 15 (never really knew what I was up to anyway) so lost a few minutes there.
Missed 20 - one of the easiest controls in the forest - by about 90 seconds
Got lucky at 21. 6 kites in the area and I happened upon mine-bearings once again much better!
Did get pushed off-line quite a bit trying to thread myself through the fields.

1 PM

Orienteering 26:50 [2] **** 3.23 km (8:18 / km) +41m 7:48 / km
spiked:8/13c shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

Saw the Green map after run and thought it would be a good bit of practise - very middle style, so did some trains with Malley. Generally OK through to 9 (off-line to 2), then everything went tits up in the area packed with controls and I jogged round like a (sedate) headless chicken before packing it in. Mind wasn't up to it in that section evidently!

Running - Road warm up/down 26:04 intensity: (11:59 @1) + (14:05 @2) 2.84 km (9:11 / km) +27m 8:46 / km

Orienteering race (White Rose Day 1) 1:19:53 [3] **** 11.02 km (7:15 / km) +292m 6:24 / km
spiked:25/30c shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

SL: 8.8km/250m
Back on the Orienteering horse - prep for the 2013 season starts here! A bit hesitant to start with but eventually got a bit more into the swing of things. Trotted around and gradually built confidence. Bearing, for the most part, much more successful than normal.
1 - Big hesitation (was fine anyway)
2 - way low (poor bearing from AP), also mucked up bearing leaving it a bit
5 - overshot (pit)
11 - v hesitant as no big AP
16 - too high, found other control on other wall nearby, then poor bearing to actual control
21 - hit a pit which was hidden under path and red overprint on map made an unrequired parallel error (was on the right line-feature)

Orienteering race (White Rose Ultrasprint) 13:11 [4] ***** 1.61 km (8:11 / km)
spiked:22/28c shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

SL: 1.6km
Cracking little race at 1:1000 and 1m contours. Took me 3-4 controls to get into the scale (found 6 before 1), but other than getting the wrong side of the fence (and missing best route) to 11 (textual CDs = not reading them). Good heads-up O practise. Missed out on a mug by about 25seconds - all lost at the beginning I reckon!

slept:7.5 (rest day)

3 times this week I've set my alarm for a morning run, 3 times I've done my pre-run poo, and three times I've crawled back into bed for that extra 40mins or so. Didn't matter too much the last too days, but it was the only chance to get a run in today what with being at a works do in the evening. Body obv needs the rest.

Running - Road intervals 1:05:47 intensity: (8:00 @1) + (32:47 @2) + (25:00 @5) 15.27 km (4:18 / km) +22m 4:17 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: NB580 Blue

Once again forewent the morning run.

Got home to my 10k number - I've been given #10, whether this is due to my place in the alphabet or because I ticked the 'sub-36min' box (it may have been a sub-35 box...) I don't know, but I'm taking it as the later. Best put on a show then!

Out to Ropner Park then 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1, 1min rec on all except the first 2 recs which were 30secs. Aiming for 3:20s on the 1,2,3s and 3:30s (i.e. 10km pace) on the 4s and 5s.
Slow on the 2nd 4 (and below then) but other than not not too bad. Felt tough and there was wind swirling about.
sub-35 will be hard, but I'll be more rested on the day than I was today.

damnit! 200m off a 100km week! Long time since one of them (Feb at latest I presume)

slept:7.5 shoes: NB580 Blue

Was all awake for a run this morning then went back to bed.
Pushed session back to tomorrow as not feeling too sprightly. Started off steady and pace increased to 5km, when I told myself to calm it down. Then managed to do the same in the 2nd 5km without really trying, so stuck with it before jogging in. Feeling a bit more sprightly on the flat and stride length seeming a bit more back-to-normal.

Saw some gypsys playing in traffic lights.

probably the closest I've come to earning a rest day in a long while. Crashed out in front of la Vuelta so missed all the excitement.

Running - Trail 2:15:39 [2] 23.51 km (5:46 / km) +890m 4:51 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: NB749 Trail

Had a vague idea of doing the club's 10km today, but decided against it after yesterday. However I needed to do something to counterbalance last night's Parmo and fizzy lager, classy. Was a nice morning but once I'd got out it was drizzling, which kept temperatures sensible. Felt good to start with but afer 95mins feeling pretty ropey with no water and the climbs.
Tour de Bilsdale from Clay Bank. Over Urra Moor, down to Chop Gate, up Cock Howe, Carlton Bank the back over the remaining 3 peaks at a crawl. Nice route if a bit slippery at the end, must do it again when feeling a bit more human.

Mainly on good trails, really pleased with these shoes (and my NB roadies I got at the same time)

Winner: S. Bailey 55:09. 54th (119%)
Another 'meh' race really. I think I'd be a bit more pleased with it if Steve K hadn't gone through me like a hot knife through butter on the first climb. Got a good sling-shot up Randygill, but on the long descent from Green Bell I couldn't really work my way back up to the group with Steve in it about 200m ahead, something I normally have no problem doing on these kind of races.
Would also normally pull in people on the flatter final 2km, but this was hellish boggy and I lost all rhythm.
Dunno where I finished yet, but I do know I was about 1min down on the first lady and should really have broken 4min/km(height adjusted) pace on a course this runnable.

Ravenous undergrowth, lots of path and the usual mid-week O malaise (not that the areas improve this). Easy to get to and plan on, but not great at attracting new people to the sport, which is partly what I think these evening events are for.
OK for a sprint race in the eastern section.

Still, good to look at a map for the first time in ages and get rid of the daft path errors before the Shite Rose.

First time I've really pushed myself in quite a while. Didn't even match the average pace for my 5km pb, although I was on my tod and a bit quicker than a few weeks ago I think. I have neglected week-day training over the last 4 months or so, and really neglected speed. Hopefully my stamina will convert to speed-endurance with time (but maybe not by the 10km)

Flet very sluggish on Fri and Sun, and come to think of it only the race got me out on Sat. Runs probably would have helped but nice to put my feet up at home.

Shook myself out tonight, including a few new routes, feeling much better by the end of it. Planning what to do with my week off in September.

Winner: Jack Ross 55:07. 10th (109%).
Realised legs weren't up to much within the first few hundred metres. Plugged away at an OK pace but got passed too easily in places. Happyish to be only 5 mins down on Jack - this is about on par with a good performance from last year, so given it was a bit of a shitty race performance I'll take that as a minor positive.

Cracking Pennine run with a good group. A bit of everything with the Snake path to Chad's Cabin, Sandy Heyes path and Bracken Bashing to Mermaid's Pool for a little swim before a proper scramble up Red Brook followed by a cruise down the Three Knolls path, hammer down the Tunstead Fields and a good pace along the road to finish.

Easy tempo, great for first 6km then legs got a bit tired. Went to find Kat Copeland's Golden Postbox in Ingleby Barwick. It's right next to a house I looked at when I moved up here initially. Tried to come back via a path marked on OS/OSM, but it was behind a locked gate. Good to see some new bits away from my usual routes though.

then back into work *sigh*

Event: Borrowdale

11 AM

Running - Trail race 3:36:22 [4] 26.77 km (8:05 / km) +2101m 5:48 / km
slept:7.0 shoes: X-talon 212 (2)

Winner: Ricky Lightfoot 2:49:20 (45th place, 128%).

So I got my top 50, and while I'm not disappointed per sey with my run, I know it could have been much better. In summary - first 2 hours fantastic, the rest, not so much. I drank a lot of water.

I was really tired beforehand, a wonder I stayed awake for the journey over. However, with people like Oli (new dad) and Nicky (week after an 18hr BG) I don't think I have much of a leg to stand on here.

Started steady on the flat and ground it out up Bessyboot. Then hit my stride on the long drag over towards Esk Hause, working my way through groups. Got a real boost at Esk Hause taking on some water from dave and powered over Ill Crag and Broad Crag to Scafell. I took a bit of a dodgy line off the top as I don't know it and was caught by 3 on the scree (never really done scree before). Felt good on the corridor route and went through Gavin Bland like he wasn't there, a big mental boost.
Again good support at Styhead from Will and the crowds. Pulled away from a group up Gable but then the wheels weren't as lubricated as they were previously. 4 came past but only 1 got away. Stuck in with the 3, including Mark from Glossopdale and Ed from CheshireHR round the runnable line west of Brandreth. Hit Honister feeling OK, but could do nothing but grind. A few came through me, including the first to lasses (Jasmin pulled away at about the same time she did at Wasdale), but there were others having a much worse time of it than me.
The descent off Dale Head was the worst I have ever gone downhill and I managed to get stuck in some quarries as well.

I feel that, when fresh, I could happily keep up the effort from the first 2 hours. Learnt a lot and a great day out!

Note
slept:7.0

out of 10.5 hours in work I was on my feet for 9. Had planned on a jog to refresh my fugg, but 2 flights of stairs did for me and I collapsed on the sofa and managed to confuse AC/DC and OCD in a conversation.

I also missed everything exciting going on at the 'lympics - I'm currently downloading every episode of 'today at the games' onto the iPlayer desktop, then I'm going to re-live it 2 weeks behind schedule as a reminder of what went on.

I currently feel quite athletic in everyday life, and photos show me looking good in my running (don't know what weight I'm at at the moment), but I constantly feel worn when I race. I keep daydreaming about bouncing up hills Rhys-style, but when I actually hit a hill it's more of a stagger. Hopefully soon I'll get a day when I'm properly rested, feeling lithe, smash it and get a result I'm really proud of (Grt Lakes was good, but extenuating circumstances). I'm not expecting this at Borrowdale, maybe Weasdale depending on the next 2 weeks at work. I think it's taking me longer to get the summer work-training balance than I expected (but it was so easy in the winter! I blame the TdF, 'lympics and my current project, which I'm trying to get off but will likely be on until kingdom come)

man, what a fanny! Time to actually listen to myself when I say 'man up'

Feelnig flat, but a lovely evening on the moors an a nice, albeit tracky (as standard), route.
Jim and Paul shot off from Cook's so I settled into a cruise, not wanting to put too much effort in ahead of Saturday. Was caught by a young lad who was shifting, and he pulled away on the track across the moor - had a feeling he'd get lost or blow up, and knew he couldn't descend. Had to see to some gut issues but caught him up after he went wrong after the headstone then pulled away downhill so he couldn't see where I went. Good job he couldn't anyway as, having only ever done Headstone-Roseberry in the opposite direction, I took the wrong path and hacked through head-high bracken for 2 mins. Still, popped onto the summit in 3rd and cruised it on in, guy closing kept me a bit honest but 2 bottles of red and a white means spag bol and risotto for the next 2 weeks!

About 6mins down on Jim, not great, but still feeling pretty flat after long races and not enough running mid-week (courtesy of TdF) for recovery, and general time-on-feet at work.

Also need to get guts sorted before Sat.
