Note

Entered the Scottish. M21E - time to play with the big boys (and lose, but it's the taking part that counts!). At least I'll gain some man points unlike Fanny Llewellyn (lets see if he's got AP yet!)
6 PM

Running - Road 18:44 [2] 3.75 km (5:00 / km) +49m 4:41 / km
ahr:157 max:207 slept:8.0 shoes: New Balance M849

loop to Gooders then Endcliffe. HR a bit on the high side of late.

Ministry of Silly Walks warm up/down 6:33 [1] 0.67 km (9:47 / km)
ahr:135 max:179 shoes: New Balance M849

..but at least it's dropping fairly quickly.

Running Intervals 31:00 [4] 7.48 km (4:09 / km) +35m 4:03 / km
ahr:175 max:237 shoes: New Balance M849

HR data all over the shop for the first 2 reps. After that settled to around 180 which is more like it for a session.

Sesh:
1x 4min/2 (1.2km)
2x 3min/1.5 (0.9, 0.84)
3x 2min/1 (0.58, 0.58, 0.57)
4x 1min/1 (0.28, 0.34, 0.30, 0.33)
Felt fairly even throughout. Couldn't quite relax as much as I wanted to for some reason but legs loosened off after the first few.

First intervals sesh in 15(!) weeks - and that was one of Jones' fanny-boy efforts, not a Ween Machine workout!

Down to the train station early doors. Kris was at the meeting place before me and had the cheek to send a text despite being well within ShUOC time. Taste of his own medicine

Running - Road warm up/down 13:00 [2] 2.7 km (4:49 / km)

SL - 5km
Not done an Urban race in what feels like time. Very enjoyable course though, much better than the last time I came in 2009.
Bit scrappy through the school at the beginning, dropped about 90secs to Kris on the long leg (lack of speed and stamina), clean but flagging a bit through the streets at the end.
Missed 3 optimum RCs (5, 10, 21), Cocked up 1, hesitant out of 5 (easy) and lost about 20-30secs overall with punching with my sloooow SI (ties/people got in the way a bit).

Most enjoyable, and justa bout managed to hold off the 'old men'.

One thing that is a problem in urban areas like this is that a long leg (more often than not required to get between 2 interesting areas) leaves you with plenty of time to plan ahead the rest of the course. The big field at the beginning of today's long leg gave me plenty of time to plan ahead before hitting the streets the other side of the river, so once back in the town I could concentrate on not getting run over! Something I need to think about in planning Dore (although it'll be very difficult to minimise dead running I fear!)

Running - Road 9:23 [1] 1.54 km (6:06 / km) +2m 6:03 / km

Achilles been feeling... well, nothing, recently. Time to start doing some more concerted training again - not too much too soon. though.

Out to Walkley Bank, past the Millpond, up horrendous hill (new name for 'fields of tiny horses' as there were no tiny horses), back via Crosspool. Legs felt tired and this was more hard work than it should have been, my own fault for being so bleeding lazy of late.

rhr:40 slept:7.5 (rest day)

Was going to head out to Dore to see what's what, but I managed to lose my bike-lock key, and I wasn't up for running out.
I was then going to go for a run but couldn't be bothered. Aching legs is my (rather poor) excuse.

With Dan to the staircase and back. Legs could definitely feel yesterday's circuits showing how out of condition I am, and was suffering after last night's dancing and drinking shenanigans. Dan had the youthful spring of a Fresher who has yet to tire from continuous alcohol (and Camembert!) consumption and as such had less of a hangover than myself, so I struggled to keep up a bit. Well that's what I'm saying anyway...

Much as I want to get out running over the next week my Achilles is again telling me not to. No point ruining summer so I'll just have to find a job instead!

Warm up/down 4:01 [3] 0.74 km (5:26 / km) +9m 5:07 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

Orienteering race 2:31:47 [3] ***** 12.9 km (11:46 / km) +965m 8:34 / km
spiked:16/30c shoes: Muclaw 333 (3)

Ran: 16.41, 523m
Despite the low 'spiked' ratio this was much more of a success than yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Messed up 2 (too low) and 3 (really bad!) but was OK through the woods at the beginning, seeing Martin (3mins) at 6, although I was a bit sloppy in the circle at times. Got caught by an 'interesting' attack into 9 and we had a nice SYO train - Martin, Me, RichG (+3) and TTDP (+6). Tim and I pulled away on the long leg and I managed to out RC him, despite ending up a bit lower than I wanted towards the end of the leg. Tim came back to me when I ballsed up 11 poor compass/no thought) but was OK until the start of the butterfly. Was then really poor through this area - martin caught up and got ahead, TTDP got away and Rich got ahead. Had a nice time after the turn-over with Rich and Huw's she Straddling!. Leaving 28 I had Martin back in my sights. Told myself to be sensible back into the area the butterfly was in for the penultimate control - if I could keep in contact I'd beat him. But I mucked up by 3/4mins, which resulted in the rather hilarious spectacle of me and Rich simultaneously approaching #29 from 180deg the wrong direction.

A slight glimmer of promise. Without the butterfly cataclysm this would have been an OK run. Found it quite hard to concentrate but was thoroughly enjoying myself, which is what it's all about, and I didn't finish last (of the real men who finished) - today I enjoyed getting my moneys' worth!

Jogging about before Bigland. After a week of inactivity my body wondered what I was playing at!

Orienteering race 1:06:51 [2] ***** 5.2 km (12:51 / km) +310m 9:54 / km
spiked:9/25c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

ran: 6.51km, 268m. Even this doesn't break 10min/km!

Yeah, I don't do Lekeland forest at the moment. Saw my 2min man leaving #1 vacinity, got excited and mucked up. Told myself after doing OK on 3 and 4 that I could pull it together with a sensible leg 5 - but I bollocksed up in the circle - schoolboy. Caught McIver 6mins at 8 (he was having an even worse time of it than me) and was OK (considering) to 13 but the rest (save 22 and the last 2 through the fields) was cataclysmic BarberO at its best.

Still, worth it if only to work out what NOT to do in lakeland forest.
I need practise on areas where all the rock detail can't be mapped, I'll count today as the start of that...

here's something fun for you all:

Ben feeling a bit shitty the last 2 days, no motivation to revise for my upcoming Viva on thurs.
Headed out to get some endorphins pumping. Walkley, stables, Lydgate. Bumped into Eugene and Becca near the end, found out he's eaten Lion.
always entertaining.

Warm up/down 11:31 [1] 1.91 km (6:02 / km) +5m 5:57 / km
ahr:189 max:218 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Jogging around trying to get my legs lively after a rather uncomfortable previous 16 hours - after my individual I spent most of my time on the bog with a dicky stomach (Scott's?). It's a wonder I didn't shit myself during the SingSoc concert!

Orienteering race 27:00 [5] ***** 3.5 km (7:43 / km) +115m 6:38 / km
ahr:181 max:218 spiked:18/21c slept:8.0 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Ran: 4.22km, 63m; 6.24min/km.
Dan had a bit of a 'mare, coming in 19th about 8 mins down.
Ash dragged us up to 7th but the box decided not to tell his dibber he'd been to #201. Whether the box told itself we'll never know (both were unknown to me when I set off).
Bit hesitant to 1 and 2 but no time lost.
Parallel error on 5, don't quite know how, but was looking at the wrong path. Thankfully lucked out again and found it quite easily. 1min
Slow through the north section - esp. on 11 where I was very hesitant (30secs?)
Caught Happy Herts up through spectator. Didn't know where I was. Thankfully we had the same gaffle which helped immeasurably with #17 and #19.
Once out of the woods I pinned my ears back and passed Herts. I could see BAOC top in front - they set out in 1st at the begining of the leg and as I passed him I heard the tannoy say that 'the leading 3 were together'. I'd done my job and made sure I was in the lead after all the Orienteering, game over! He stuck with me for all of 5m but there was no way he was keeping up. Absolutely stoked on the run-in (bit of over-emotion due to tiredness), but Dan looking like death was not a site I wanted upon leaving download.

Absolutely certain Ash visited that control and punched it; at first I was angry with the organisers/rules for not allowing us a read-out from the box but this gradually subsided. We know that we did what we set out to do, and won.
Considering everything else which happened in the week previously missing out on a pair of socks and a vase... I don't really care.

Orienteering 28:49 [2] 3.09 km (9:20 / km) +94m 8:06 / km
ahr:145 max:195 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Helping Neiol collect in a few controls and tape. Despite how much I've been up to this weekend I was well up for this and thoroughly enjoyed it. Got to head out into the Northern section and marvel at the fantastic map - much better at 1:10000 than Hugset is at 1:5000, and that's hardly a poor map!

ahr:164 max:188 slept:7.0 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

After 3.5 mind-numbing hours on the start I jogged to the start from the arena for my run. Pretty tired.

Orienteering race 1:25:28 [5] ***** 10.4 km (8:13 / km) +360m 7:00 / km
ahr:174 max:202 spiked:23/29c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Ran:12.24km, 311m, 7:06min/km.
Clean through to 7. Was a bit slow/hesitant up the hill to 4.
Caught DFR at 5.
Bit too low on 7, cut down too early. 20s
Minced to 8 - long leg across green hash - poor up the hill at the start, then pussied out, took the path when I should have gone straight through the bracken.
Bit right on 13. Climbed too high on 14 but meant I could see the control easily.
15 caught up DFR - obv he had out R-C'd me to 8, further compounding how crap I was through there.
Al caught us at the start of the long leg (17) and we took different routes. Caught him when he slipped up at 18.
Clean through to 21 - good relay prac with Al and DFR.
Fucked up 22. Followed Al, we all went wrong (too high); thankfully I relocated before the rest. Called Dan back, Al had disappeared. 90secs and all my luck used up.
Slow to 23, picked up a wrong ride but realised before it was too late.
Al caught me again at 25 and I used him through 27 to the finish.

3mins down on JT. Was absolutely knacked after yesterday and the start of today. Found it really hard to pick up mid-leg features today and was pretty poor up the hills.

BOC M21L ROUTE

Note

I'm pretty pleased with 2nd. OK, I wanted the win if possible but it wasn't too be. I maybe lost 3 mins on running due to tiredness, but probably gained this back in having Dan and Al to push me along and work with at the end.

3 years on 21L, time to move up to 21E. I have no doubt that I will suffer a few 150min epics again, and the end of courses will be tough, but there's no point overstaying my welcome on long unlike a certain ginger ex-ShUOCer ;)

at least City didn't choke and did the business against Stoke - a good weekend for Manchester football I'd say!

Spent the day setting up the arena for tomorrow. It's gonna be great. Pretty tired, need to get a good night's kip tonight and make sure I don't knacker myself too much before I start tomorrow - a least the veg'll be trampled by then!

7 PM

Warm up/down 7:00 [2]

down to the start (3mins) and a bit of jogging on the way back to ensure I made the bog.

ahr:179 max:223 shoes: X-talon 212 (1)

Epic number of runners and once again I was quite a way back at the start - took me until the river to pass Hobbs. We were then directed the wrong way by a marshall - I think the slightly shortened route was weighed out by the 200m of heather bashing we had to do, but managed to leave a few people here. Mnaged to not get passed on Higger or up to Burbage bridge and kept it going along the edge despite having no-one in front - the stick works as well as the carrot then! Fast finish, felt pretty rough throughout, must have been pushing hard! Top 20? maybe even top 15.

To the river and back to warm up. High hr and legs not feeling to great but better than yesterday. Decided to Trunce to try and shake some life into the legs.

Running - Road race (Trunce #3) 25:58 [5] 6.09 km (4:16 / km) +154m 3:47 / km
ahr:180 max:190 shoes: Adidas Kanadia TR3

5th place, PB smashed (28secs), Sub 26 - done. That's a target I though would take longer to fall than it has, and I reckon there's still time to come off.
Set off hard and managed to maintain it fairly well. Ran a lot further than normal up the quarry. Due to my starting pace I didn't take as many people as normal. Was slippier than I thought on the descent through the woods (should have run in fell shoes) and I had to slow right down to ensure I didn't stack it, consequently I was overtaken on a downhill for the first time I remember (took the place back after the river)
Hit the road in about the same time as normal, but this time I had the energy to keep up along it and kick on the track, taking 2 more places.

Maybe went a bit too hard ahead of tomorrow and the weekend, but I decided half way round that I was going for sub-26 as who knows how many more trunces I'll get to have a go at. Feel like I'm in good form at the moment and looking forward to the weekend and next season once I've got some more structured training in over winter.

Rivelin East, Mill Pond, Den Bank, Xpool. Was hoping to feel a bit perkier after yesterdays run, but last night's beer-shenanigans (probably) put paid to that and legs felt heavy. Started a bit quickly and after 16mins I had a stitch (first in aeons) so I calmed it down from then on.

A very easy short jog around and about. No pain from Achilles, although other muscles in left leg felt a bit heavy - pos. due to unconscious compensation. Humid out but was thinking through my plan for next Saturday.

Friday May 6, 2011 #

Note

Ache back a little (as expected) but not too bad. Some light jogs this weekend, get the legs used to running a bit before Tuesday and next weekend.

it would appear that getting so wankered I can't remember my own name is good for my Achilles - no pain today (although I did spend most of it asleep).

and now it's the union Beer Festival :D

still aching, actually started a bit of stretching today! Not got a full team for Calderdale so get an extra 2 days rest (if I decide to not go trunce).

Achilles a bit sore on walking down to Uni. However I'm getting bored of sitting around (after only 2 days) so may try a punter tomorrow - although I do actually have some things to do not on my own time for once!
