propper oldskool day gattin' hoes with Shaun. Just like being 15 again, only now it's 32". Much more satisfying than the previous 14"

Orienteering race (Peak 'O' Trial) 1:37:00 [2] *** 13.2 km (7:21 / km) +600m 5:59 / km
spiked:5/6c slept:7.5 weight:71.4kg shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 Yellow 2

Decided to go clockwise, which very few of us did. The main problem today was that I couldn't push myself running on my own - I was going at a pretty steady training pace. Skidding all over the place along the trail to Moorfield Road, and it was a long slushy slog from there onto the moor where I had little motivation. Then a big slog across to the flanks of Kinder - where all the people who had gone anticlockwise were on their #5. I was on #2. Then had to find my way to Harry Hut, which I managed, but very slowly as I didn't want to end up miles off course. Here I caught someone up, who it turned out had started out 8mins after me. oops. Was running quite well from here through the last 3 controls as I had someone to pace myself against, but I was still running well within myself. Stacked it coming down towards herod farm on slippy mud. OMMjacket could now do with a wash...
Shane won in 79, 2nd was 82 and 3rd was a Durham Uni bloke in 87. 87 was easily gettable, just my usual problem of not being able to hit race pace on my own. Good course planned by Des. Fairly easy, but had a control which was always going to be tricky no matter which direction you took the course (clockwise - Harry Hut; anticlockwise - the sheep pen)
here's a rough approximation of my route

These new Inov8's don't seem to be affecting my heels nearly as much as previous pairs. The massive heel-seg on my right foot must scare them into submission.

Note

Boxing day at the Fox, just like old times - first time I attended this I was 18 days old, a whole 21 years agoooo. Morris, Music, Robbinson's, Carols, dodgy folk songs, slither back over the hill to home, crash on sofa, Robbies headache circa 8pm

Running - Road 1:07:00 [2] 11.9 km (5:38 / km) +250m 5:06 / km
slept:8.5 weight:70.4kg shoes: Inov8 RocLite 320

Out through the fields and up to Mellor Cross. (nice views of a rather grey Manchester), down over the Railway to Strines, up to the canal, along here for a bit before dropping underneath a different railway to Mousely bottom, back home along the Goyt (a river name Kryton would be proud of), through the Torrs (for the first time I've been there the archy screw was working!) and SVT.
Tough in the snow, even along the flat - this was meant to be a run with little resistance, but there was more than I was anticipating - the first km took me 9mins (hilly), and the first 2.5 nearly 18 (and 1.5k of that was flat)!

slept:9.0 weight:70.5kg shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 Yellow 2

Went for a bit of a low-level explore on footpaths into Cheshire, with the aim of getting to Robin Hood's Picking Rods. Had the OS map in my hand for most of it as I didn't know where the hell I was going, but only spent about 5 minutes floundering in a field I shouldn't have been in.
Up behind the Pack Horse and over to Mellor Cross, before cutting across to Mellor then Mellor Chapel. Then went to Hollywood and some paths to the Gun Road. Across this to the Picking Rods (Whay!) and on up to Cown Edge. Here there were ~12inch snow drifts - maybe a bit more in places. Awesome :D Down Cown Edge into Rowarth and Little Mill, through Thornsett Fields Farm then across to Stich Lane before heading back.
Was tough running today. The snow was above my shoes for most of the way, only abating for a few quicker snow-covered tracks, and was feeling the heather hopping from yesterday.
Spotted some fantastic-looking sledge-hills on my wanders - shame they're all a bit too far away to walk to.
Lovely sun out today. As I'm not going skiing (again) this season I'll have to make the most of this snow. Going Sledging in a bit - time to dust off the Pizza Tray and hope I don't end up in the barbed wire!

Once again, climb and distance from the OSmap

Note

Just had a look in the Go Outdoors christmas sale catalogue. They're selling 330's for £49. 2 weeks after I payed £59! Bastards. Still, might stock up. They also have F-lites (with a picture and description of RocLites) for ~£20! and MudRocs for £45. May head in to the Stocky branch tomorrow as I the uppers on my current Roclites are definitely perishing. Might have something to do with running in forests with them...

Running - Road long 2:06:30 [3] 19.0 km (6:39 / km) +650m 5:41 / km
slept:7.5 weight:70.1kg shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 Yellow 2

Oh. My. Days. Not done a long run in about 6 months, and what a way to break the trend - without a doubt the best run I've ever done, especially on my own. A fair amount of it was in terrain as well :) The snow's been flirting with us for a few days and it wasn't that thick when I left. Down to the trail (where legs were feeling a bit tired) then up to Lantern Pike (24.5mins - not much slower than normal). Then down the other side through Hey Wood and Brookhouse to the A624 and Carr Meadow. Sttarted off up the track to Chad's Cabin, but quickly turned off to bash through the snowy heather to The Knott. Checked the map and set a bearing across Leygatehead Moor for Mill Hill. Hit a stream and checked the map again, but re-located off a stream a km further down the hill, so hit the path much sooner than expected just to the right of Mill Hill, headed right to the top of William Clough. Was intending to head up to Sandy Heys, but the wind was blowing sleet at me and I didn't fancy that an exposed descent in that weather! So headed down the clough, then up to Chad's Cabin. Down via twenty trees into Hayfield, then back along the Trail. Picked the speed up here to try and lower the average speed, and felt surprisingly good!
Had to slow down at times to make sure I didn't end on me arse, but was running well.
Awesome day, and it's just dumped a couple of inches of propper snow. :)

Route went something like this (although I took the distance and climb from the OS map. )

Running - Road 1:09:00 [2] 12.75 km (5:25 / km) +190m 5:02 / km
slept:8.0 weight:70kg shoes: Inov8 RocLite 320

Back home for Chrizzy.
Woke up and it was about -5 and solid ground. was -4 when I headed out on some paths that I have hardly ever been on due to a) them always being far too muddy, and b) a traumatic experiance with an arsey horse when I was 8ish. This showed as I kept on loosing the path to Rowarth and dicking about in people's front gardens, farmers fields and even on top of someone's septic tank.
From Rowarth wanted to head to the north of Lantern Pike, but kept on following the bridleway and ended up on Stitch Lane. Couldn't be bothered going on the road for too long so went a-trespassing to get to the Pike, then headed back above Little Hayfield, around the bottom of the resser and back along the trail. Pretty slow most of the time as I was wondering where the paths were going. Sped up a bit once on the trail. Nice easy crisp morning run.
Felt toasty warm (a tropical -2 when I got back)

Note

afternoon putting the lights up on the outside tree and watching Dad hitting the Christmas tree with a plank of wood to try and get it out of the bucket it was frozen in.
Ground is frozen solid, and as Snow is forcast for tomorrow I'm holding up for awesomeness!

Not enough hours in the day! (although plenty of time to fall asleep in lectures - don't ask why I stayed infront of the computer until 2.30am doing nothing!)
Lab project finished. I managed to take one of the most promising algae for biofuel use and turn it into a crap one - 2.5mg of oil from 25mls of culture - not a particularly great result, but a result nonetheless!

Orienteering 10:30 [4] **** 1.2 km (8:45 / km) +30m 7:47 / km

Head to head with Dave, Ash and Rocke Jnr then a little train. O was pretty shoddy. Running OK though.

Orienteering 13:20 [4] **** 1.5 km (8:53 / km) +30m 8:05 / km

ShortCourse around the Collegiate campus. Set off ~2mins after Dave (on map mamary) and ~1min after Ash. Gained on them both, but then wurzled them good and proper with a rc taking a good 300m out of theirs, On a 250m leg! Bonza! Ash cheated to restore parity but then let us past. Good fun on a good course planned by John.

Running - Road 42:00 [3] 8.7 km (4:50 / km) +130m 4:30 / km

Out via Lydgate, Crosspool, Sandygate, Ranmoor, Broomhill; Back via le hopital and Weston. avec Dave. Legs felt a bit tired which is odd - they've done little recently!

Orienteering race 1:55:12 [3] ***** 13.9 km (8:17 / km) +515m 7:00 / km
spiked:24/30c slept:6.5 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 Yellow 2

New shoes after my debarcle last weekend...
I hesitate to call it a race as my O isn't up to the standard where I can run at race speed (except over long legs with obvious route choice), but if racing is when you get the balance of nav and speed just right, this wasn't far off for me! I was moving quite well considering the last few weeks, made few mistakes, and was less hesitant in route planning and fine nav than I normally am. Really enjoyed it and found the mother of all orange mud pits on exiting #18!
Few tinsy snaffus:
#1 bit slow, bit faffy, but just getting into the stride of things (and going up to my nipples in brambles...)
#4 Drifted right and checked every pit east of the actual one. Maybe a min lost. Similar at 6 but no way near as bad.
#17 had my route planned great, but went a bit far along the path adding maybe 200m.
#20 by this point Ben Stevens and JC had caught me and we all spent a bit of time looking for the depression next to a (seemingly there when they mapped it...) patch of open. 1min. (they helped me through the next few controls even though I was a good 200m behind them.)

Only got caught by my 6min man at 14 after 45mins of running, which I was more chuffed about when I thought he was my 3 minute man, but still not too bad. Slowed a bit at the end, especially once I'd passed Faz. Tried a sprint finish but cramped up after 20m.

Running - Road 54:00 [3] 9.95 km (5:26 / km) +200m 4:56 / km
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 320

Heavygate, Bole Hill, Stables, down to Rivelin Glen, up and down a bit to the Mill Pond, along the bottom to the bridge. Up the fields of tiny horses (no horses) VERY slowly, coppice, cirith ungol, allotments, stables, back through crookes/crookesmoor.
Lacking any get up and go today - it was struggle. Tomorrow's gonna be FUN!

Running - Road 37:00 [3] 8.3 km (4:27 / km) +20m 4:24 / km
shoes: New Balance N1024

Out to accelerate to drop off the size run and not get shoes as they didn't have any in my size. Then back to Tesco. Walked back from there.
Not run at a decent pace in what seems like an aaaaage. Felt not too bad.

Running - Road race 48:00 [2] 8.0 km (6:00 / km) +330m 4:58 / km
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 Yellow

Felt pants, probably shouldn't have run. After 32mins had a nice '5minute error' behind a wall, but from then on my bum was giving me hell so was jogging like John Wayne along with Andy Moore, who was suffering from quad probs.
48mins running time, ~53 overall. Shame, would like to have had a race with Benji.

I then went and left my Mudclaws under the car, drove off, realised 20mins later, asked charli to go back and look but nothing there. Bottoms. Thye'd only done 70miles max as well.

All in all, a waste of a day.

Saturday Dec 5, 2009 #

Note

nearly passing solids again - quite looking forward to racing tomorrow, although lack of running recently will be entertaining. Will make a decission as to racing when I get there, based purely on the state of my guts.

Running - Road race (7 William Hills) 50:14 [4] 11.1 km (4:32 / km) +130m 4:17 / km
shoes: New Balance N1024

Was umming and ahhing over whether to do it as I felt a bit pants earlier. However, set off and got wurzled by Luce immediately! From then on I saw no-one going in my direction, apart from Hobbs who appeared to be taking an interesting route-choice... The last km or so back up from the Uni was tough. Pushed a fair bit, but know I've got more when I feel better. Pleased te beat Zan by 3 mins, but she was probably putting less into it than me...

somewhere between 4&5.

5x(30,60) on Lawson Road.
30secs ~ 130m, ~11m climb, up and down ~80secs
60secs ~ 260m, ~25m climb, up and down ~140secs

Session was 6, but I skipped #5 as I could feel my throat, and if I loose my voice before Saturday it looses me £60 in 30mins.
call it 19mins in total...
