Note

Spent the day not packing but watching le tour and comedy and shiz. Looks like the chin won't win! Would like to watch the last few km around the champs ellyse, but instead I'll be passing Paris on a 27 hour coach journey to the Pyrenees tomorrow, great! but the next 8 days or so should be great! Especially as I'll be working with Phil all week, so we'll be doing little little work... Sod's law I'll get ill tonight and have to suffer the coach...

Lived it up in Maccistan with the 6th form lads last night, must have drunk more than I thought, but there were still no problems (unlike pete - couldn't keep up with those who have been at Uni for a year...)
Good warm up for next week :D
Blisters irritating, will have to take lint and tape to France. Putting that on whilst hungover after 3 hours sleep and having to walk around all day will be FUN!

Running - Road race (Shining Tor Fell Race) 58:35 [3] 9.44 km (6:12 / km) +488m 4:56 / km
slept:9.0 weight:69.4kg shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 'O'

Ran it easy. Very easy. Didn't push at all, just ran how my body wanted to run, so was quick down 2 descents, and very slow down another. Probably could have easily had 5 minutes off that time, just don't feel like running too quick at the moment, which is irritating. Otherwise, felt quite fine. Twas very humid, especially through the foresty bits.
Going through the last gate (just after a loverly foresty plummet :D), managed to get my right heel caught under it, pulling my shoe and killing the slight blister under it, which resulted in swearing (thankfully young children were out of earshot) and a bit of hobbling, but the uphill road finish spured me on. Took 3 people, and ended in a sprint finish with some people I should have been 4 mins ahead of. 3 of us finished with the same time.
Why did they have an 'Intermediate' catergory (18-21) and not give out prizes for it? Maybe it was only because I was the only one racing... or I was a bit too slow.
85/160odd. Half way at a pootle. Won in 41ish, 2mins under the course record.

Running - Road warm up/down 5:00 [1]

run to start, bit of stretching

Climbing 5:00 [1]

stopped at a twilight Windgather on the way home, had a bit of a solo up a mod/dif in my trainers and a bit of a walk around the top. laverly!

Note

Sent out the ShUOC sponsorship letters and photo/honours sheet - that looks well sexy as I got it done professional lyke.
Just put Savlon on my blisters. ooo it stung a bit.
Quite pleased that they didn't get much worse despite the skin being weak. They are worse, but not as bad as they could have been. Hardy hurt at all during the race.

Tuesday Jul 22, 2008 #

Note

Got some slight blisters on both my heels due to hard new shoes/running a fair amount yesterday, so doing little.

Running - Road long (long fell run) 2:36:00 [3] 22.0 km (7:05 / km) +710m 6:06 / km
slept:7.0 weight:68.9kg shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 'O'

A combination of New Shoes, GBR WOC relay Gold, not being at Oringen, and that I'm only home until the end of the week and Kinder was looking glorious got me out on a cracking day. From home along the SVT to Birch Vale, then up to Lantern Pike. Down through Hey Wood to the Glossop road. Walked along that (dodging traffic), then up from Carr Meadow up the the Shooting Cabin over Middle Moor. From there to the botto of William Cloug, and then up to Sandy Heys. From there along the edge (cutting a few bits across peat) to the Downfall, and then along to Red Brook, before taking the lower path down past 3 knolls to beeath Kinderlow end. Then down through the fields to Tunstead Farm. took a diversio from the road via Hill Houses farm to Bowden Bridge. Then into Hayfield by the campsite and river, then back home along the trail. Walked a bit of that.
All in all, cracking run! Especially when overtaking DofE kids up Sandy Heys :p

Running - Road race (Great Hucklow Fell Race) 58:03 [3] 9.76 km (5:57 / km) +333m 5:05 / km
slept:6.5 weight:70.3kg shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 330 'O'

Saw the family off on Holiday to the Alps, then went and did the Great Hucklow Fell Race. Nice Course, but I do see what Matt said about there not being enough climb... was fairly cross-country in places, but I fancied a flatter run today (bear in mind it still wasn't flat!) Fairly slow race - winner was 48mins, I know I could have run not far off that time, but I wanted a bit of a pootle, and am not as fit as I was 2 months ago :( (todays time was 6/7 mins slower than my Burbage skyline, for only 500m more and less climb!)
First time in my Inovs, loved them! First time I've been able to decend/corner with confidence, and keep on people's heels up very muddy slopes, cracking! Went very slowly through the undulating mines-like section, which is where Matt lost me for the 2nd time. Could have gone quicker there. The last 1/3 of a mile was on road, which I was quite grateful of as it meant I could pass 4/5 people.

Grotty day, am a bit busy later, cba doing anything. Managed to weedle a pair of Inov8s out of the parents last night, so awaiting their arival :)
I want to get tuesday's debarcle out of my head, but don't think I'll have a chance to for a while!

Running - Road 37:00 [2] 5.0 km (7:24 / km) +200m 6:10 / km
slept:8.0 weight:70.8kg shoes: Asics somethings

Tookthe car to Vic's in Little Hayfield, then ran home up lantern pike and down and along the trail. Felt pants. May be due to having just woken up, or just feeling generally rubbish at the moment...

Running - Road race (BamfordCarnival Fell Race) 36:49 [4] 7.2 km (5:07 / km) +305m 4:13 / km
slept:1.5 shoes: Decathlon Kalenji Kapteren XT

Started off at ther back as per usual, so Gaz and Bridge opened up a fair lead on me. Wasn't too fussed as I was cruising a bit, but still found it a bit tough. Nice descent though.
Know I could have gone quicker, but twas lovely on top and nice to have a fair run considoring how I've done over the last few weeks.
Apparently Gaz and Bridge had a sprint finish, with El Capitan pulling rank to win by a second!

Orienteering (...or see 'cocking about') 1:21:21 [2] **** 5.5 km (14:47 / km) +210m 12:25 / km
spiked:11/22c slept:9.0 weight:70.8kg shoes: Decathlon Kalenji Kapteren XT

MDOC event at Alderly edge, last orienteered here when the map was new... i.e. 11 years ago.
Had a feeling I was on to a looser when I lost my SI card in the car and spent 5mins rummaging around for it. Unfortunatly, that wasn't my largest error of the day...
Decided to do the Blue course, as I know I'm not great at navigation in woodland, and even more so when the bracken is so high and all marked on the map!, so decided to test myself a bit.
All in all, navigated slowly, ran rubbish, but feel it was an OK exercise in getting round it after my 10 minutes of cocking about at 12 - I ended up in an open area that I couldn't see the details of on the map as it was covered in out-of-bounds lines. oops. Only realised how wrong I was when I found number 19... messed it up so badly due to turning the map over I think... or maybe that's an excuse :p
If it weren't for the 10 minute error, I'd have finished with a time I'd have been fairly happy with. Wasted about another 5-7 minutes on the rest of the course due to being silly in the control circle - i.e. up a hill, down the other side, then having to go back up to get the control. der!
Meh, perversly I enjoyed it, which is all that matters, isn't it?

Note

Car is going in for a service tomorrow, if I have it back in time I'm gonna go to the Bamford Fell Race, even though I have no running speed at the moment :( If I don't have car back, may get a train.

Running - Road (Pointless Run) 30:00 [3]
slept:9.5 weight:70.8kg shoes: Asics somethings

Sat on the computer most of the afternoon sorting out the SingSoc website. Decided to get out for a bit just before dinner due the the masses of food I ate yesterday...
Headed somewhere, got a bit lost in fields with no obvious paths... I think I was trespassing, so decided to turn around and go home. All a bit pointless as a route, but still worth getting out.

Note

If I was a gladiator, I'd be called Herpes. Or maybe Enema.
Just had to stop the Hamster from chobbling through my mouse cable. Damn thing bites anything, but does have some fantastic climbing moves - I call her Ruth (pronounced 'Roof') as that's where she spends most of her time...

Sunday Jul 13, 2008 #

Note

Decided Holme Moss was too much like effort, so mooched around the new crib, had a rather nice Roast courtesy of Liz, before heading back to NM and eating even more food before watching Pulp Fiction. class.

Running - Road warm up/down 10:00 [1]
shoes: Asics somethings

Pootle around Milhouses with Danger before the qual, and a bit of running to the toilets etc

Orienteering race (Qualifying) 13:13 [4] *** 1.5 km (8:49 / km)
32c slept:9.0 shoes: Decathlon Kalenji Kapteren XT

Set off at the same time as Rhys and Rob Little, leaving the Labyrinth in sight of them, so not too bad in the maze then! Lost about 30 seconds running around a thicket on my 2nd control out of the maze trying to find a way in, then had a 30 second faff amongst flower beds, hedges and trees, and 10 seconds around a pool - just wasn't thinking, and kept on muddling the control order on the map up which wasted more time, but didn't misspunch or anything. Still managed to finish 5th in my heat, as it was the slowest overall (apart from Schorah and Craney)

Other Sport (Basketball) 20:00 [1]
shoes: Asics somethings

Fannying around on the basketball court with Danger, Rhys, Rob and others

Orienteering race (B final) 19:55 [4] *** 2.3 km (8:40 / km)
45c shoes: Decathlon Kalenji Kapteren XT

Had a bit of trouble deciphering which loop followed which control in both maze butterflys, and both the ones in the park, but apart from the loops didn't have much problem with the other controls. Thinking back, wasn't quite in the mood so didn't make too many mistakes, but was just slow in decision making. Very slow...

Some piccies from the A-final what I took.

Lots of schlepping around Sheffield between neuu house and clean 1st year house yesterday and the next few days.

Other Sport (Damp Tennis) 1:30:00 [1]
slept:7.0

Spent the day cleaning the house only for it to get mucky again, and painting 2 of the walls so we can hopefully get a full deposit back...
Then went to the new house and down to weston park to play mennace with Danger and lil'bit. Twas raining, but still played...
1st time playing in about 4-5 years, and it showed - my first serve shot off the rim and hit the guy on the next court. oops!
Still, a few games, then some T-games when neill turned up.

Last night in 27a tonight. It's the end of an era!

Calfs feel really tight today - a lot tighter than they should do after a race like yesterday's. meh...

Rhys told me to do Holme Moss this weekend... If I can get a lift I may do - I'd like to start doing longer races...

Running - Road race (Hathersage Gala Fell Race) 39:14 [4] 7.2 km (5:27 / km) +320m 4:28 / km
slept:9.0 weight:69.4kg shoes: Decathlon Kalenji Kapteren XT

Started a bit too quick up the road and through the wood, what with Rhys (sporting the most absurd backwards-peaked-cap) only 20 yards or so ahead of me, but it meant there was less queueing at the stiles.
That said, I felt really quite poo whilst running, maybe due to having a big dinner not long before hand. From Mother Cap to Higger Tor was dead slow considoring it's mostly flat/downhill,(Gaz caught me just before Higger Tor) and on the slight uphill bits of track on the way down I had to resort to walking. Even when I hit the steep downhill road I was feeling slow and getting passed (inc. by JennyJ) but then, with the finish in site I nailed the last bit of road (to the 'ooohs' and 'ahhhs' of the massed spectators) as there was someone breathing down my neck, and the last bit up the field wasn't too bad!

Slow milage, but don't think I could have gone much quicker at the time. At least I beat the local chavs in their unlaced sneakers whose preparation was to finish a fag before the race started..

Running - Road warm up/down 5:00 [1]
shoes: Asics somethings

Run from the station half way to the registration, when I met Nails/Rob

Sunday Jul 6, 2008 #

Note
slept:10.5 weight:70.3kg

Bit busy yesterday, slobbed around today, watching F1/le tour de chaffing/the mennace.
Think I'll do Hathersage race tomorrow.

Bike (Trail Ride) 2:41:00 [3] 54.8 km (20.4 kph)
slept:9.5 weight:70.3kg shoes: Claude Butler Trail Ridge(Bike

fancied something long and sustained (insert joke here) on the bike, so followed the canal from town (Swizzles was making double lollies...) to Marple, getting off at the lock flight, then taking the Middlewood way to Maccistan. Quite boring, but kept a decent pace up

Note

Just checked the nopesport Urban league table, quite glad I did, as at the moment I have 2 points 'accounts' - Nicholas Barber, MDOC (JK sprint and Stockport) and Nic Barber, ShUOC (York and Manc Uni), so I've emailed someone and asked if I can have these 2 'different' people put together, as at the together I have a handsome 319 points and am currently in 5th place in the men's open table!

Running - Road 1:25:00 [2] 13.5 km (6:18 / km) +510m 5:18 / km
slept:11.5 weight:69.9kg shoes: Decathlon Kalenji Kapteren XT

Long Loooong lie in.
Then training run with Pennine. Put distance in later, but up to the reser, bottom of William Clough then to mermaids pool. Wait while some people swim (I'll save that for a warmer day) before hiking up to the Trig Point at top of Sandy Heyes (624?), then down Sandy Hayes before hitting the track up to Chads Cabin, then back down via 20Trees asnd the road to Hayfield.

Wednesday Jul 2, 2008 #

Note
slept:10.0 weight:71.2kg

Slept in late as felt a bit rubbish when was awoken by the next door neighbour having a phone conversation in his garden

Running - Road tempo 15:25 [4] 2.3 mi (6:42 / mi) +30m 6:27 / mi
shoes: Asics somethings

Quick pre-dinner preamble before dinner, (he said tautologously)
Along the trail to Hayfield - decided to push it a fair bit on the way out.

Running - Road 18:10 [3] 2.3 mi (7:54 / mi) +40m 7:30 / mi
shoes: Asics somethings

Back from Hayfield after a 5min or so rest.
Mum's Home-Hayfield-home record is 29mins, altough she did take a slightly shorter route... I'll try and beat that time, but not going to obsess over it - I'd rather be on hills than along the trail...

Note

oh, and left knee feels fine (y)

Climbing 30:00 [3]
slept:9.0

Headed out for a relaxed day of it with Iain and Mark.
Saw the nesting pereguines flying about - looks like the chicks may have fledged a bit...
