5 days trekking in the atlas with the last day up Toubkal (4167m) for sunrise. Good time on feet (4-5h each day) with most at 1800m+, albeit it nice and easy. 4 days in Marrakech warm but plenty of time ambling about as well. Bit of illness on the trek, good to keep going when feeling weak.

Cautley Whores show, english champs. 27th. +4 on Lamby.

Staggered up the first climb alright once past the have a go heroes. Gapped a bit as it got more runnable to the top. Descended well and climbed the gentler gradient above the spout pretty well before digging in for the next CP. Descended well with Max, but hit the bottom at the front of the group and had nothing on the flat or river, finishing pretty much at the back of the group, shipping 6 places. Great fun though, and will put the lack of responsiveness of the legs down to the heavy load of the last few weeks

SOB with Han. Bumped into Scoffer, he was so wrapped up I didn't notice it was him until I clocked his running style.

I've reached the point where I can recognise running styles at a glimpse.

Brown knoll and Kinder. Some bearing work, some steep climbs, some rough ground, some trods. Went to 636 which I think may be the first time I've been to the actual summit of Kinder. As a runner at least.

Mountain Trial. 1st, ~13mins up on Jack Wood.

Felt pretty strong throughout, especially on the flats and downs. I faded on the ups later on but you've just got to plug away and I managed this successfully. There was a bit of mizzle and mist early on, then a bit of wind later. Was pretty spot on with the control finding with the exception of 8 where I dropped a few contours. RCs pretty good except getting a bit flustered at the map issue and taking an unnecessary detour around the tarn (and losing 1/3rd of my food in some bracken); and number 10, where I decided to cut a corner and ended up in nipple-deep bracken going "this is where you lose a race like this" to myself. So maybe 5 mins lost total. Bit right on 6 - got a bit confused.

Knew that if I could get sight of Jack (4mins ahead) early it would set me up well, though the earlier starters of andfall, tomtom and M Purkis were live threats, albeit of varying levels. Passing Steve B (twice!) early on was a boost (the first time). Spied Jack a couple of minutes ahead at 1 and closed the gap a bit on the technical ground over to 2. Once on the climb to deepdale he and bloke in white (turned out to be andfall after going walkabout to 2) climbed better and it was all I could do to slowly close the gap on a couple of randomers. However gap closed down to Dunmail. I then saw bugger all of them for the next few hours. Plopped into 6 just as I was starting to question myself. Caught I Embrey at 7 and took different routes. Stopped GPS at 8 as battery warning. Then a good hoof for home. Played my luck maybe a bit too much with the brackeny cut and the gorsey/brackeny route up to 10, but the later proved fine. Jack was maybe 45s ahead here but looking tired and I opened up a good gap with better lines and a strong run to the finish (SLMM d1 start helped here).

Pleased with the win and a name on a piece of fell running history, especially after last year's cancellation when I had a 10min lead with ~70mins racing left. However I'm well aware of the much better fellsmen, fell runners and orienteers who more deserve their name on the trophy but had to deal with the likes of J Naylor and W/G Bland.

Back. Thankfully met up with the family who had an extra layer and some food for me.

Legs and body felt very wooden running all day, but moving OK. Another day another BIlly Bland sighting, as well as a lesser spotted Chris Owens, the Brownes and Pennine's Litherlands.

5.7km into Cockermouth to mooch around the ToB.
Everyone was crowding around the Team Sky bus (of course), I was more interested in spotting Billy Bland and witnessing an angry sausage dog

I managed to leave my key in the bike lock but my bike is so naff it was still there when I returned. However the rear tyre was flat. Managed to pump it up enough to get off the main road but from then it wasn't holding so I walked the rest.

Had a punter about Cautley spout. Short champs races can often leave me cold, but this looks cracking!

Some questioning with a guy I bumped in to as to where the 3rd CP will actually be - at the random spot-height (but probably actual summit, though difficult to be sure!) as shown on the map, or at the cairn which is a few 100m east.

Strava climb tallys better with map than AP calculation (1170m) - they are noramly quite close for me when on proper hills.

Parked up at King's tree and batted around Bleaklow etc. for a few hours. Mist rolled in as I approached Grinah stones, so at least losing my hat 30mins earlier didn't have pink-tinged consequences. Reversed a bit of the HPM route - badly - then struck out from the River Derwent to Outer edge before dropping down from Cut Gate.

Front loading this week a bit before Sunday's Big Dance.

Totley Exterminator (GPS deleted itself) - 2nd

I felt very sluggish to begin with so resolved to just settle in and get through. To Higgar I was mainly in 6th. Sam Allin had gone from the off and 3 other Totley and Paul Fawcett were ahead. However I got going a bit once on stanage about the hour mark and managed to get myself into 2nd by the time we were back on Burbage. For the last hour and a bit I was moving comfortably though only ever at a steady pace. Sam ended up about 7 minutes ahead of me.

A reminder that I need to be a bit more disciplined with myself. Can't hit everything at full race pace and next weekend is more important. I ran a very similar time to 2 years ago - then I was pushing throughout trying to keep Steve and Neil in sight; today I was mincing along and rarely got above steady. Good signs.
