Note

SLMM entries open tomorrow (along with S6D). The question is, Klett or Scafell. Whilst I like the idea of Klett the lack of own tent and score system are the (current) major downsides. I also enjoy racing as a pair, and there aren't many opportunities for this throughout the year.

easy spin round the river, still fine in shorts. Helped some guys push a car into their garage.

hmm, doing 45mins of this a week never really caught on did it...

run on my own, wait, then warm up with the group.
km reps round greenwood - Gary busy so I was 'in charge'. These reps actually work out more like 950m for the evens, 880m for the odds, with rec of 800/300m or so after (respectively).
Gave everyone a get-out by saying we'd get to 5 and see how we were going. I'd liked to have done 6 but was actually pleased of the get-out as I was struggling a bit on the last one. #6 would have resulted in me pooing myself anyway. Best not to push it too much at this time of the year as most of the guys are easing into heavier training.
Actually a good group tonight. I was out on my own but people within 5secs or so, and very little waiting around between reps.

anyway, paces were:
3:07, 14, 10, 16, 16

Build on this later with less rec. and a couple more reps.

Running - Road intervals 55:02 intensity: (28:31 @2) + (8:31 @3) + (18:00 @4) 13.78 km (4:00 / km) +55m 3:55 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: NB580 Blue

For the first time in a while it didn't seem like a complete chore to get out quickly after work.
10min warm-up (whilst GPS sorted itself out...) then:
8.5mins tempo - 3:55min/km (aiming 4min/km) felt very easy
2(1)3(1)4(2)4(1)3(1)2
all around 3:30min/km give or take a couple of seconds except the 2nd 3 which drifted out to 37s - 1min rec after 4min on tough!
8min jog home
Felt really good on the 1st half of the short pyramid. Bit harder on way down but still quite comfortable. Most of the efforts had a bit (quite a lot for Teesside actually) of 'uphill' in them to keep me going.

Had planned on another bit of tempo (and maybe a 1.5km strava segment) after, but guts decided 55mins was enough today. Probably prudent as planning on backing this up at club tomorrow, then backing up ParkRun, SprintO and XC at the weekend.

Chris Leigh 37:25 (105%)
Last race in the PFR champs and the last chance to get my 6th counter.
Debated playing the 'stick with Chris Leigh' game for about 5 seconds. Steve, Tom and a couple of others came past on the long ascent but never got more than 50m. I could hear Cap'n Ward right on my heels as we headed towards BigStone, but shook him off and got into 5th place on the fast stuff to Peep O day and worked on reeling Steve and Macc guy in on the XC through Phoside - them mucking up a gate gaining me vital seconds. Took it steady on the final climb up Foxholes before hitting the top about 150m behind Steve. Pinned the ears back, got the legs turning over and had him about 150m out. I was really gunning for it as I knew he knew I was coming for him. Chris was way ahead, with Tom J about 45secs ahead of me. Thankfully he's off travelling again soon so he'll get unfit again ;)

Spent the last km at sub 3min/km pace, fastest being 2:22min/km (25.4km/h). I fooking love downhill!

Going well through the town until a big hesitation going to #10. Then forgot about all the levels in Park Hill at #13, but ended up visiting all 3, losing what felt like 2mins. Then slipped way down the hill to #14 and a bit slow for the remainder.

forgot that you need to get into a mind-set for proper sprints! OK for most but will need to get some practise in closer to JK/British.

good fun!

Better this time, pulling myself from 10th to 6th (5th after DQ). Got in a pack with DanFR and AndyP (including a 20sec loss on RC to #6 as I followed the train) before losing them in Vic Quays- very hesitant on #11 though but somehow managed to get it right.

Lungs OK, but legs still a bit wanting. A bit too excited to be on top of the nav, a bit to 'seat of the pants' at the moment!

Followed this with a cheeky burger and pint (or 5) in the Dev Cat before getting on the train home who brakes broke, and so was stuck, gently sobering up, on that until 10.30 (and Stockport)

Went fast up to the cabin to try and get a couple of Strava segments - 4 seconds off on the first, but 1 second quicker on the second. Also found a few more segments (Wm clough, Sth head) to have a go at over xmas.

Nice day, good weather, cracking run.

Dropped the car off at the garage on the East side of 'boro (well, the screenwash pump has been fecked since Feb...) and made my way back via the Riverside Stadium and Transporter Bridge. I've been here 14months and this is the first time I've been either of these pillars of Teesside. One is a ludicrous display of over-engineering for a purpose well below its size and grandeur; the other is the Transporter Bridge ;)
Actually the areas I went through were quite nice for quite an industrial area - even saw a T-rex! Took my headtorch for the river section but something's shaken loose, managed fine without though.
Quads and calves very sore, but tomorrow's a rest day!

cold's pretty much gone, although I did hoik up the best greenie I've ever managed on the way back.

Note

oh, just as an aside:
Yesterday on the final climb I was staggering like a drunkard. I only raise this because of the 'biggest piece of work gossip in a long time' which occurred in our office last week, in which a lass who had been with the company for 2 months or so was relieved of her position for being nearly 5 times over the legal drink drive limit at work, drinking on the job frequently and then driving home.

You stay classy Teesside.

I was expecting sod all from this after yesterday, and I'd made it widely known that my legs were ruined. However, they feel better now than they did before (don't get me wrong, they're still sore!).

4 2km laps (and a finish) of generally flat course with 3 big and 2 smaller berms (spectator viewing for the racetrack) acting as the climbs. They were enough for me today!

Once we'd all shuffled ourselves at the beginning I was only passed by 2 people, Rev and a Rich&Zet. I had Kev behind me keeping me honest, could tell he was slightly gaining on me judging by the cheers of support on course but was always comfortable and first BMHH home. Lungs felt great after the cold and I managed to just about tell my legs to shut up their moaning.

Obviously down on where I'd normally be (just outside top10 I think) but pleased, looking forward to the NE champs on my Birthday!

slept:7.5 shoes: Mudclaw 333 (4)

Winner: Carl Bell 2:27:01 (112%)

Set off at a pace I (think I) could easily maintain for 2hr40ish in the summer. Once up the first hill and to CP#1 I felt great on the long downhill to #2, stretching the (second) group out, and even felt OK heading uphill from 3 and 4, despite Scoffer and DavidHBT overtaking me both times (they overtook me 3 times in total as I got some much better lines).
Was with a CleM (eventual 1st V55) at 5, just behind Scoffer and HBT. Something in my shoe (from weds?) needed shaking out, only still for 40secs or so but lost a bit of impetus. Aparently the race begins at CP5, in much the same way Edale begins at Mam Nick. Looking at the map I though 'once you get to 5 you're almost home' but there's still 3 steep climbs to go. I was passed by a few people on climbs 4 and 5, but thankfully by only 1 person on climb six out of cp9 (despite others closing), and it took until here for Dave, Julian etc. to pull away. My quads were ruined and it was a big struggle to get the legs turning over for the descent and road to the finish, but I held off 1 and passed another for 18th (15th if you take out those DQd for leaving the hill via the ascent route), 10th senior.

Glad to be at the front of a pretty large group (3mins between me and 12 places back, but not much more to 1st v60!), some ahead I normally beat, but not so often in longer races, and I'll take 112% of the winner's time (even if CB did what he does best and dick around). Nice day with a bit of clag but not too much. 3rd team as well!

Just signed up to Strava to see what all the fuss is about. May give me some impetus for training around here.

SL:5km/250m
weighed in an hour of last week's overtime bounty for some ArmyO around Roseberry topping. Good to get some emit practise in! (I was shit.)
Basically I rushed everything as I was on a fairly tight schedule, and so spent more time on the course than necessary. a fair amount of banana-ing, though some due to the brambles/deep dead bracken and following paths on the ground not the map and vis versa. Still, a great way to spend a lunchtime, but should have been much closer to, if not below, 40mins.

Nice course, middle-distance style in some places. With the mix of wood and open, I'll revisit this after (a hopefully hard) winter has killed off the brambles and bracken, as it should be fairly relevant to Stanton Moor (only without the bollock-high heather!)
