Long minging OMM-focused run with Andy. He'd designed a round which he attempted and bailed on in Feb due to snow and miss-measuring (initially thought it was 40 miles).
On the East sheet of OS Lanranger 31 the word 'Currick' is written 16 times, and this round linked up all of them - a Currick nominally being a well built neat cairn, but in actuality being anything from that down to nothing at all - we're not convinced the cartographer knew what one was but was so happy with the new word he'd just discovered he used it a lot.

Anyway, the weather was a bit minging, I felt a bit shitty from 5hrs onwards (standard) and, apart from 3km or so on track and 1km on road the route was mainly over rough rough ground - including a good 12km-or-so stretch which was soley reserved for peaty groughs.

My watch couldn't hack it, so here's the entire loop from Andy (it nearly got there...)
Not much climb but I think the terrain made up for it! Out for 6.30 in total.

As I was doing my assessment at the park it would be rude not to. Ruined Andy Marr's day by turning up and winning.
A bit twisty-turny, a couple of ramps and a bit blowy in places. Did the first lap in 8.30 but was immediately hit by a gust along the start straight and lost my rhythm a bit. That, legs which were beginning to feel Thursday and not having anyone to race against resulted in a second lap 40 seconds slower than the first. Pleased to be comfortably under 18 on a slow course on my todd - quickly realising that stamina doesn't necessarily equal speed endurance.

(equates to a 17:28 5km according to Daniels, as course a little long)

'1.5mile' reps, fitting in nicely between leaving work (6.15) and going back (7.45) - a good job I work 100m from the club and, for once, was prepared with running kit.
Most of the guys are doing redcar half on Sunday, so they were doing reps at or slower than 1/2mara pace. I went for closer to 5km pace and was on my own up front - until I stopped for a poo between 2 and 3 (handy having all reps starting from the club) so I finished last (making people think I'd busted out 4).
reps worked out at 2.36km.

5min wu
7.55 (3), 8.00 (4.20 jog, 4 poo), 8.10
pace: 3:22; 3:23; 3:28
13.5min warm down.
lost my flow a bit between 2 and 3. Will re-visit this session early next year to gauge how things have gone over winter.

What with racing most weekends over the summer, and mainly doing long stuff, I've got out of practise of gutting myself in a session. Getting there, but not quite.

Really good week, nice to get around the lakes without a car and at a pace at which the scenery can be enjoyed more than my normal visits!

Level1 course today. List of ailments from the week:
Slight blister on R foot where base of Tongue rubbed slightly on Weds.
Knees a bit tender - bag too heavy maybe!
Left foot a bit bruised over metatarsal (I don't know which one) I think - fine walking when barefoot, but shoes compress it a bit.

Helvellyn was OK, not great, and there was a big school group in before starting DoE.

Set off expecting it to take longer to get to Threlkeld, but managed to make the bus with 15mins to spare. Up Sheffield Pike before taking Sticks Pass to the ridge, ticking off Stybarrow, Watson's and Great Dodds and Clough Head. Feeling really good before dropping into Threlkeld before the 5.5hrs of public transport home.

Elterwater was nice - the bloke I passed bike-pushing up Black Sail Pass turned up after dark.

Pretty horrible day today. Jogged over Loughrigg into Ambleside where I stopped off at Bilbos for some much needed warmth. Then via Low Sweden Bridge to Low Pike and High Pike, the most useless peaks in the Lakes, I'm didn't even recognise High Pike as a peak, but I went all up the ridge to Dove Crag, Hart Crag and Fairfield. I then took a dodgy line off in the mist via Cofa Pike before descending to Grisedale Tarn - I think this may be a good BG line up though!
I was sort of glad I'd forgotten St. Sunday Crag, and walked down the C2C route, over Lanty's Tarn before a pub stop-off in Glenridding before heading up to Helvellyn YHA.

Black Sail was one of the reasons I did this, and I wasn't let down.

Over BS Pass (passing a bloke pushing his bike) and up Kirkfell (nice view) a slightly iffy way. Then over Great Gable (no view, standard) before dropping into Styhead and headin up the Corridor Route. Ticked off Lingmell before taking the tourist path up Scafell Pike. Claggy so headed over Ill and Broad Crags to Great End before taking lunch above Esk Hause. Then over Esk Pike and Bowfell where the weather came in somewhat. Over Crinkle Crags before taking in Cold Pike and Pike O' Blisco. Despite 300-odd people, including myself, running the line 4 days previous, I still managed to end up high headin towards Blea Tarn, before staggering up Lingmoor. Mucked up the paths and roads, adding in an unwarranted loop to Chapel Stile before finally hitting Elterwater.

Keswick YHA - Not great. Some essex boys got irritated at me for walking infront of their pool shot, and 2 fat scousers in my dorm spent a lot of the night complaining to someone for snoring. Ironically, I slept through the snoring and it was they who woke me up.

Took me 3 attempts to pack my bag. Found the run out through Prtinscale and the woods tough. After covering Catbells, Maiden Moor and High Spy I put my trousers on and quick-walked the rest of the day over Dale Head, Hindscarth and Robinson before dropping into Buttermere over Snockrigg for Ice cream. The plan had been to cover Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag, but I walked along the south of Buttermere and headed for Scarth Gap direct. Couldn't even be bothered to but in Haystacks before dropping into Black Sail Hut.

Then Halls Fell to Blencathra, Over Foule Crag to Bannerdale Crags, Mungrisdale Common, Great Calva, down to Whitewater Dash, up Birketts Fell to Bakestall, onwards to a very windy Skiddaw, off quickly picking up Skiddaw Little Man and Lonscale Fell. Started pissing it down as I hit the outskirts of Keswick, left Latrigg for another day, but did get a bit lost in the north of the town, but still running well on flat at the end.

CLOK Guisborough LongO - basically a trailquest around where I do the majority of my off-road training. 16th, Rhys Fondly Rubyourbottom 1:59:44 (111%)
Had a nice walk in from Chapel Stile, via the coin tree, to loosen my legs off.
Set off well up Weatherlam (GPS lost on the track out for about 2.3km/75m asc). Various lines up, I sat behind a group including John Hunt and Andy Beanland, although others gained a bit by the summit. I was feeling OK, but didn't have much poke going over to Swirl Howe - no repeat of overtaking what felt like half the field at Coniston last year - and spent a lot of the time trying to clear my nose.
John's group were about 100m ahead, but I hopped on the Mike Robinson train around Great Carrs which chucked us out at the front of the group. Stayed near the front but couldn't attack the decent as I would like (managed to get the story of Amex fucking himself on this section 2 years back in my head). The group got away up Blisco and off the top as I was slipping all over the place. Struggled up Lingmoor, lost a couple of places before the summit but also gained one, before taking 3 on the final descent.
Felt OK, but def had Sun and Wed in my legs so I couldn't push on. Also grip on shoes is going a bit, hence feeling like I'd lost my bottle on the descents. Have a brand spanking new pair of Mudclaws at home which were perfect for the sodden ground - time to retire these Xtalons from racing, use claws over winter before getting new talons next spring. Nice to finally beat Jasmin, although it did take a 'short' race to do so!

warming up. I'd really psyched myself up for the race yesterday and this morning. But I appear to be on my meriod and a bit of a fanny and minor things going wrong put me in a baaad mood. I then got really wired and excited/nervous for little reason, with elevated hr. Had 20mins shut-eye before warming up which seemed to settle me a bit.

Running - Trail race (Roseberry Topping) 12:40 [5] 1.96 km (6:28 / km) +182m 4:25 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (2)

I'd been really looking forward to this, and wanted a good race. I'd prepared myself mentally to go off fast and hold on for dear life, dig in and make it hurt on the up, before doing what I do on the down.

Made sure I was on the very front of the pack, which resembled a creche with all the kids there! I wanted a flyer so set off on the track at 1500m pace (maybe faster) to get to the gate with no worries. No-one came with until a young lad got just ahead in the woods. He went up the chute and I went up the steps.
I couldn't quite keep going on the path as I was on my own, but despite power-walking a few times I was well ahead of anyone on the same route as me. Out of the woods and I could see the lad making good ground to where the routes join. He had a bigger gap (15-20 vertical metres?) than I would have liked on reaching the summit, but could he descend?

Took me a bit of time to recover from the ascent but eventually got going. Really slippy and, at times, the most out of control I've ever been. Took the chute down (on my arse) as it was slippery before hammering the final woods and track bit. I knew I was safe from people behind, but didn't know what the kid in front had done.

What he had done was turn a 30sec(?) gap at the top into 50 by the bottom. I've never been out-descended (period), let alone by that much!

Turns out that the same kid (Jack Willis) won it 2 years ago, when he was 13. 3rd place (Sam Garrett from CLOK) is also 15, as is Bronwen Owen, the ladies winner. Dunno where Cam has been the last few months.

Beforehand I really wanted to win, but I'm happy to concede to an obviously prodigious talent. I'm not surprised to be beaten on the way up by a skinny whippet.

Not too happy with my technical descending at the moment. I suppose all the long stuff over the summer has no relevance on a race this short as well!

Still, first person old enough to buy alcohol!

Cracking day in the lakes. Early start meant I got more cool weather than most. Cracker of a day, so no problems with the nav.
Started with Tim Beale and stretched my legs on the run out to the maps and the first track, feeling good but missed the path to the Hause Gate col, so went direct through marsh and Bull Crag onto Maiden Moor. Easy into the control as could be seen for miles.
Followed JonM (6min man) out initially, but then took more of a contour around High Spy. Hit 2 and 3 (short leg) dead on whilst agonising over the RC to number 4. As it happens I got the right route, skirting SW of the Dale Head Summit, over Hindscarth before dropping into Littledale - all runnable apart from 400m scree.
Big contour to 5 (having been told I was having a good run by the marshals at 4), then a big contour round Knott Rigg, which lead me right into Sail Pass. Passed people here which kept me going as I started to feel a bit rubbish.
Hit #6 and was told I was only the 2nd through (49th starter). I'd initially planned to take the Coledale rout S of Outerside but eventually plumped for the contour N - my only mistake as, although quite runnable it was no why near as fast as the path, and I managed to drop a bit too much and had to clamber through heather at the end (Hello Dan...).
Slight Dogleg to 8, getting as much food as I could in. Hit it at the same time as Rhys (started 49mins after me...). The fast into 9 and the finish (not mucking up the last control like a certain winner...)

Finished 8th, 40min down on Rhys and 4secs down on Camel. Really pleased with that, Fell highlight so far? Felt great for the first 2 hours, and it carried through a lot better than at Borrowdale. Still work to be done. OMM partner was an hour slower than me (been doing lots of cycling and not much running of late), so looks like I get the heavy bag!

http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/default.a... paced myself well, clambering up the rankings throughout, although lost 3-4mins on #7 to those around me, losing a couple of places

I'm happy to take 32secs off my pb and to get under 36 (always knew 35 would be tough after the summer and finding it hard to break 3:20min/km in the few intervals sessions I've done), but I'd like to have been a bit more solidly in the 35:xx bracket.

Felt OK but again the first km was a bit too rapid. We had a slight headwind from 4-8km but nothing too bad -if anything it made keeping cool in the sun easier. I also didn't feel like I'd completely turned myself inside out when I'd finished

splits: 3:17, 3:30, 3:34, 3:38, 3:34, 3:39, 3:40, 3:43, 3:43,3:27.
I felt like I was going much better in kms 7-9.
Last km was only because I got in a sprint with a bloke who egged me on. Thrashed him.

Into winter training now (along with some weekend warrioring), I need to be a bit stricter with myself. I'm going to target some 5/10k (and maybe 1/2mara) races before March, as I was running really well on the flat back then. A good XC season as well, what with the nationals being quite local.

targets:
5km: 16:30 (currently 16:53)
10km: <35 (now 35:48)
1/2: <79:30 (although I like the 'BOOB' pb and am not too fussed about 1/2s)

What a great event, well worth the trip down. Knowing the big RCs on the area was very useful, as I mainly just had to work out my route into the control.

Off with the big boys on first leg. Managed to keep my head at #1 whilst many others were losing theirs, and at 7 I was leading, which meant when I missed the very obvious gap towards 8, everyone else followed me on a round tour of the building (30secs)
Hit the circle of 11 first, but lost 10secs in the circle and the pack caught me. Had planned on north route over to #12 at Birchen, but ended up following Oli and Jonny - shame as reckon would have still lead with initial RC.
After that we were into dead running and I'd pushed a bit too hard. OJ and Jonny went away, I got caught in all the green bits into #14 and Supersaint got away at #16. Was then fighting with FVO and SLOW on the faster section around Vale flats. Slow got away (but was the DQ'd). Caught myself before getting wrong-sided at #26 after spectator (10sec). whilst I held off FVO to finish.
1min20 down on Jonny, 1:00 down on OJ and Supersaint.
Great fun, but surprised no-one lost any teeth - I had one collision and saw at least 1 more, and many near misses!

Score event after. 50 controls, but only 36spaces on my SI so I only scored 36points. Missed out some sitters though! Jogged around as a warm-down ahead of tomorrow's 10km
