slept:8.0 (rest day)

Was going to head out. Knee feels fine now, but will be keeping an eye on it and acting sensibly. Good day bashing the lab project - nearly finished now, just waiting for a few more results off lab-mates and I'll be ready to have a good crack at Pub Golf on Wednesday :D

all green and no paths makes Nic a poor Orienteer.

slept:8.0 shoes: Krapsta Crapstroturf

Managed to lay to rest the demons of 2 weeks ago when I scored a beaut of an own goal and was at fault for another. We played really well, and I was pleasantly surprised when our response to going 1-0 down wasn't to ship more, but to take the lead soon after! We played well and rode our luck at times - but it's about time we had some. Ash scored a stormer to take it to 3-1, but they clawed one back. Thankfully some back-to-the-wall stuff and a sharp Faz meant we claimed a deserved win against a team against whom we threw a 2-0 half time lead away last time.

Running - Road 45:15 [2] 8.45 km (5:21 / km) +100m 5:03 / km

Walkley, Crosspool, Ranmoor, Hallam, then back. With Ash, easy. Knee grand for first 25mins and OK after that.

Running - Road warm up/down 13:00 [2] 2.5 km (5:12 / km) +30m 4:54 / km
slept:8.5 shoes: New Balance N1024

Shoes were surprisingly OK in the wet snow. To Goodwin and then the hill, and then home.

Running Intervals hills (Springvale Road 2.30s) 28:20 [3] 5.0 km (5:40 / km) +250m 4:32 / km
shoes: New Balance N1024

6x2.5 minutes up, jog back recovery. Each rep about 470m/40m climb.
Quite a big group, and I didn't realise how parked-up Springvale gets, so it was a bit necky with people running on the road. I went for the snowy pavement option to slow me down. Was taking it very easy due to the knee - I could tell that it was there at times, but 40mins of easy running was OK. Put a bit of effort into the first minute of each rep, then cruised the rest as legs could tell they hadn't been used properly for a week or so. Still need to keep it easy mind.

Wasn't feeling too great today so took it easy. Knee feels fine when running, but I'm not going to push my luck too soon.

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

After a cracking night out I watched a bit of Olympics. As I ascended the wooden stairs at close to 5am it was cold and Dry outside. Needless to say when I poked my head out of the window at 11ish I was very surprised to see the snow! Alas I couldn't go and play in it, even if it may have got rid of a hangover I'm surprised I got when I looked in my wallet to find I'd only spent £10. I blame people plying me with vino...

Warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.5 km (6:40 / km)

jogged around collecting controls in. Felt fine, but am still very aware that if I try pushing it in the next week or so the pain'll just come back as worse, if not more so.

Note
(injured)

walking on the flat doesn';t hurt, but I can tell something's wrong. Walking upstairs ande it hurts like a bitch however, which is great as all my lectures are up 12 flights of the buggers and I'm too proud to take the lift.
Need to be professional and not do anything that may make it worse. Thankfully (?) I've got lots of work to keep me occupied instead, but it's a right kick in the teeth considering I was hoping to have 3 good hard weeks and a final rest week before BUCS. Hopefully it won't last long, but from experiance 3 weeks it is until fully fixed. Last time I tried to train whilst injured, so hopefully laying off the impact fully will reduce healing time.

Running - Trail long 2:25:00 [3] 25.75 km (5:38 / km) +450m 5:11 / km
slept:7.0 (injured) shoes: Inov8 RocLite 320

To Goodwin to meet the other two members of ShUOC's aryan super-groups (namely messers Street and Ramsey). Foggy out through stables, allotments, top of rivelin, across the GC (orange balls only), and along the Redmires Conduit and past the eerie reservoirs. Then Stanedge pole, boggy path to Stanage edge, Burbage Bridge, frosty heater bashing across towards Ox stones, through Lady Canning's to the Houndkirk road, down to Porter Brook and back via some of the less interesting paths in the parks as were knacked by this point. Finished off with Steve to the top of Newbould road before walking back from Broomhill to keep me as loose as possible.
Good pace - by no means a pootle, and though not fast I managed to maintain a good pace for a lot longer than I used to. First propper long run in far too long - had been meaning to build on my Chrstmas ones during exams, but never wanted to be more than 60mins away from my books it would appear. route

Feeling the same sensation in my right knee I had last feb in my left due to overextension. Dunno what it's due to this time. Light training is OK, but starting up after a short break today made it hurt for a few minutes, and running a bit straight-legged to compensate won't have helped. Otherwise it was surprisingly OK through terrain with only a few niggling moments. Might have to resort to a week of light training so as not to aggravate it more.

Running - Road 35:00 [2] 6.95 km (5:02 / km) +105m 4:41 / km
slept:8.0 shoes: New Balance N1024

Pre-hills run via heavygate, Bolehill, slow in the dark&muddy stables, crosspool, lydgate, goodwin, then to Burgoyne Road.

Running - Road warm up/down 8:00 [2] 1.3 km (6:09 / km) +25m 5:37 / km
shoes: New Balance N1024

back home.

Running Intervals hills (Burgoyne Road 2mins) 24:40 [4] 4.3 km (5:44 / km) +240m 4:29 / km
shoes: New Balance N1024

6x2mins on Burgoyne road with jog down recovery (~2.10 and a tiny bit of waiting at the bottom)
Last time we did this (a while back) I was finishing way down the hill. Today I was at the top in 2 mins on the first 3, and dropped about 10-20m off the top in the last 3.
each rep ~390m with ~40m climb, according to MMR.
Felt OK, but the last 50secs of each rep was tough as it got steeper. Recoveries were a bit less recovery than normal, which was good. Hardly any waiting at the bottom.

Note

Just put in my first PhD application. Looking at it's title, and projects I've done over the last 20 months, I can't see anyone in 3rd year at Sheffield being more qualified than me! Hopefully my paper-work is up to scratch!

I was running it tonight!
Got very warm in the warm-up

Still got a bruised Cocsics, so sit-ups were replaced by (poorly attempted) crunches. Otherwise pretty pants tbh, but a bit of banter's always good.

Running - Road 26:32 [3] 5.36 km (4:57 / km) +110m 4:29 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: New Balance N1024

Been feeling pants since tuesday, some form of illness leaving me really tired - and the Winter Olympics being on all night isn't helping me. Managed to drag myself out around Bole Hill, Stables and Crosspool. Was putting in far too much effort for the speed I was going and even got a stitch at one point. To be expected.

not the week I was hoping for, though hopefully the rest was useful.

Running - Road 32:50 [2] 6.2 km (5:18 / km) +110m 4:52 / km

Felt pants all day after playing quadvods at corp.
To goodwin, then to the hill, dropped greg off at gooders before looping back behind tapton and down school road.

Running Intervals (Bradley Street) 26:02 [4] 5.44 km (4:47 / km) +145m 4:13 / km
shoes: New Balance N1024

8x reps on Bradley street. Felt much better than anticipating, but taking it fairly easy. Not as steep as I remember.
340m, ~20m climb, ~90secs.

First across the wall and into the score section, and I had quite a good order planned. However, managed to cock that up, so covered much more distance than necessary shuttling up and down the hill. Left in a pack made up of lucy, lizzie and a couple of others. Was very scrappy through the first 18, especially when coming close to the control. Was trying to play straight-is-great and not really getting too far. The fact that my map was at 90degrees to the way it should have been most of the time didn't help either - think a thumb compass may be in order.
Better on the second part of the map, but still trying to go straight over limestone pavement and not having much luck in picking out boulders, but got a bit lucky seeing people in the distance heading in/out of controls. One big boo-boo on 32 as I ended up way north, but dragged Maria with me so didn't loose any placing - was quite tough to have someone close enough to pounce if I cocked up.
BIt far down on the leaders. If I hadn't cocked up the score at the beginning it'd have been interesting to see how I'd have coped in a group with them.

Langdale with Lucy, Zanthe, Neil and Hobbs, taking in 3 tarns, crinkle crags and pike of Blisco. Felt rabbish up the hills, better on the flats and descents but still not all that great. Had loosened off by the time we hit Blisco and was better up there than any other hill. Bazzin' day with bluuuue sky and solid snow on the tops. Cracking.

Running - Road 32:30 [2] 6.0 km (5:25 / km) +100m 5:00 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: Inov8 RocLite 320

Spent all day indoors pretending to work and getting cabin fever. Thankfully there's not too much to learn for data handling tomorrow. Wasn't going to go out, but a mixture of the cabin fever, snow arrival an that the only exercise I'll do tomorrow will involve lifting many pints to my lips got me out. Along walkley (aka 'carpark'), Bole Hill, stables, crosspool, lydgate, crookesmoor. Lots of silly driving.

Running Intervals 8:00 [4] 1.3 km (6:09 / km) +60m 5:00 / km
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 320

4 laps of the bmx track in bole hill, 300m, off 2mins.
1.14, 1.12, 1.10, 1.12.
got 25secs into the 5th before guts gave up.

Note

also spent some of the day mapping new mills on the openstreetmap.

After an effort up Conduit nearly killed us, we decided to ditch any aspersions of doing hill efforts, so ran through crosspool, Ranmoor, Bingham Gunbarrel, Whitley Woods, bingham, eccy road, and uni. Quads aching, shoes a lot muddier than they were previously.

Monday Feb 1, 2010 #

Note
slept:6.5 (rest day)

Last but one exam went really well. Just Thursday's now, but need to get a wiggle on with my poster also.

January was a pretty hefty month training-wise for me, nearing 32hours, the majority of which was running and O. ~180miles and ~300km, quite a lot in snow, so good strength running. Managed to squeeze in a lot more O than I was expecting, and if I can keep my concentration up on courses (yesterday was a case in point of loosing it, saturday a case of doing everything well and at a fairly good pace) I should be able to get some results I'm proud of.
Did notice that my stamina/hill ability hasn't increased as my pace has over the last year, so I'll spend a few weeks on that before throwing in some more intervals before BUCS and the JK. Hopefully I'll be able to get some good technique in before then as well - need to use the people around a bit more.
Not going to move up to 21E at the JK as I'm not there yet. I may be better than some on the start list, but I fancy a good crack at 21L first - a year ago I fingered JT as my target man, and I'm getting closer (if I hadn't gone mental at Eyam I'd have had him.). And if all goes well and we all get fit (...faz...) ShUOC Morning Glory could pick up some hardware on the Short, although with Ash Oing well, me and him could push Dan for the last spot on the next team up!
1st target is to up my ranking from SYO's #35 to the dizzy heights of the top 20!
