Orienteering race 1:55:46 [5] 9.0 mi (12:52 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 295

My best red course result at an A-meet to date, 8th of 14 in my age group. It was marred by getting hopelessly confused on the 1st control - which turned out to have a direct trail route I didn't see. I took a direct route to the wrong control, and given the scale change it should have been obvious that I simply hadn't gone far enough. And it wasn't that far off - in fact, the circles overlapped, and I thought controls couldn't be that close together. So rather than go a little farther I went in circles for a couple minutes than essentially relocated back to the start. 11 or 12 minutes lost, and probably two standard deviations slower than anyone else.

Gained ground on the longer legs, where I took some really out of the way but clear trail routes, and on the short and easy controls near the very end, where I was near the top - I guess just a reflection of endurance. On the other hand, a lot of people were passing me in the steep technical section between #11-14. My shoes weren't grippy enough to handle those slopes.

Not as fun as yesterday.

Orienteering race 39:18 [5] 3.0 mi (13:06 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 295

Competed as M-Orange and came in first by a comfortable margin! This despite being nowhere near as fast as the many West Point cadets running this course - I was below average on the final sprint and close to average on each individual leg; I just didn't have a very bad leg like everyone else. Only problem was on #1 where I followed the herd and missed an easy trail route to the control. My route was direct, but went through a young dense pine forest.

Though it may not be sporting for me to continue running orange, I think I'll do it at least occasionally since it's fun, unlike red where I feel like I'm in over my head.

Red course at Cole Hill. Nice woods and nice map. Did really well with one exception - unfortunately it was a big exception. Between 5 and 6, completely lost track of where I was on the stone wall network, and after a pretty long time arrived back at 5. Ouch. Still managed to come in 3rd overall.
