Note
(rest day)

nothing today, best intentions but a pile of things to catch up on plus couldn't get rid of a headache all day.

Speaking of headaces, I need some fine weather this weekend as required to map some additional terrain to the Riverhead map for the Rogaine which is coming up too quickly. Should have gone out there on the rest day but was too tired etc etc.

WMG Long Final @ Hedley Dunes.
Hope all enjoyed the variety. Longest courses got to race in quite a number of different terrain/forest types. Mostly great feedback - just a couple of grumbles about specific small areas on AP users, perhaps some are valid.
Pretty tough mapping with poor lidar base material, and getting three mappers to see the same thing is near impossible, throw in course setters, and various controllers then the job of perfection starts getting complicated and long-winded. Very glad it's over and look forward to running there one day.

Was interesting wandering around the forest for a while stealthily watching how people were going. Would make a good comedy show called The good, the bad and the downright ugly (techniques, executions and styles that is). Even the drinks control was amusing. So Greg almost trips in the cup rubbish bag, sending three of us into a chuckle, only moments later Brent does an exact impersonation of Greg to the delight of the audience unknown to the runners of course. There were definitely more dodgy scenes I'll keep to myself and hope they don't give me nightmares.

Can't remember now it seems to have gone too quickly. I think I mowed the lawn among other chores.

Jogging in terrain 30:00 [2]

Picking up a few controls after spectating Long Qual 2 @ Temu Rd Nth.

Another warm sunny day... hope it stays dry till finals on Saturday evening but the weather may come in earlier mid afternoon.
I did say people were in for a treat! (Possibly not everyone's cup of tea?) It's not every day you can find terrain of this complexity. Most courses wouldn't have seen the half of it, and at running pace it probably wasn't fully appreciated, however there is a lot going on within the slope area. The lidar was very generalised so fieldwork was very, very tough.
These would have been the courses for my grade had I been able to compete. They make quite reasonable use. Knowing all the special areas I would have gone into the NE protruding block a few controls from the start, then had a leg across some of those tracks/gullies. Also a couple of legs I'd be a bit more careful not to let the track leg be the quickest. Pretty nice setting though.

Walking (remedial) 30:00 [1]

Very long walk to/from event center!!!
Spectating at Long Qual 1 Temu Rd Sth (Coastal)

Great day. Everything working and the sun shining.
Pretty sure most folks enjoyed the lovely forest. The M50 courses looked pretty good but I think I would have tried really hard to see if I could have used a little bit more of that really juicy terrain NW along the coast before setting a diagonal long leg of some kind. Longer courses did this as had more distance to play with.

ANZAC DAY
Long Model. Bigger croud than I imagined, people everywhere enjoying the nice terrain and sunshine.
Possibly my only chance for a run so did the recommended long course (about 4.0km) and ran 90+% race pace in about 33 mins with a bit of a wobbly at 2nd control then pretty clean. Just happy to get around without limping. First run in new Icebug O-shoes.

Spectating at the Sprint final... wow the Aussies did well!
Went out to check out the troublesome Tunnel exit. To me it looked completely correct. It may have been better though to continue the purple line and tape a little further. I think the main problem was that it was a little hard to read all the detail with the control circle also covering some detail.
Some people thought it was a little easy after the very technical qualifier, probably true looking here as I can see some potential to make some harder legs. Quite unique right in the city!
