Orienteering race 56:54 [5] *** 4.0 km (14:14 / km) +305m 10:18 / km
spiked:11/12c shoes: Integrators Orange

Joaquin Miller Park. Gorgeous day. Start at 10:42. 4th overall on Brown, first among the M65+'s. Given the course stats and the fact that I was going to go on a hilly trail run with Louise afterwards, I had expected to run only the first 7 controls (found out in advance from the course setter, Graham Brew, that after #7 one runs right by the finish). However, got to the finish in 29 minutes, so decided to go on for the final loop, which turned out to be virtually entirely on trails (and, therefore, not particularly worthwhile as a navigation exercise). The course from #2 to #7 was moderately complex, though the poorly mapped vegetation made it a bit frustrating. Only errors were quite minor. Didn't run as hard on the trails as I might have (knowing I still had more running to do afterwards), but tried to go at full orienteering speed off-trail.

#1. Took me longer than it should have (:15?) to adjust to the fact that the direction to #1 was 180 degrees opposite of what I expected (hadn't seen anyone else leave the start).

#2. Stood a while on the trail at the top of the reentrant, unwilling to go down through that nastiness unless I was sure I was in the right spot, and I was unsure because I thought I should be able to see the control and I couldn't. But eventually I did go down and it was there.

#3, #4. Had to change my routes on the fly due to unmapped nasty vegetation.

#5, #6. Most interesting legs on the course.

#7. As with #2, looking down the reentrant from the trail, thought I would see the control but I couldn't. Went 50m further down the trail to make sure I had been in the right place, decided I was, cut down through the woods and spotted the control.

#8 to Finish: turned it into a Yellow course. There were some places where there were more direct routes off-trail, but the terrain looked so uninviting that each time I decided to stick with the trail option. Twice, 17-year old Matej Sebo came up behind me (he was on the longer Green course) and he slashed through the woods and made better time; would've been nice to have been an orienteer when I was his age.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 0.8 mi (12:30 / mi)

Warmup. Part way into my jog, realized I hadn't picked up a clue sheet, then realized I'd left my clue sheet holder in the car (which was parked outside the park because the gate to our assembly area was unexpectedly locked). Had to run out in the street with my spikes on; generally stressful episode, felt like some nightmares I've had about getting to the start.

Canyon Trail loop with Louise. We walked some because it was so steep. Hamstrings were mighty tired, toes hurt on the (many) steep downhills.

This was a preview of the Coastal Trail Run's course that L may run on 3/24: Canyon Trail, East Ridge, Phillips Loop, Eucalyptus, Stream. Only the last 2 miles along the creek seemed attractive.

Stretching 1:45:00 [0]

The usual weekly accumulation of morning stretching.

Got home at 7am after spending the night in a sleep clinic, hooked up to 25 wires. Amazingly, I got a better-than-average night's sleep.

Running (Easy distance) 28:57 [3] 3.0 mi (9:39 / mi)
shoes: Kayano 19's

Front of house: 608, 544, 530, 519, 504, 111. Felt easy. Didn't want to do too much, given what I am going to attempt Sunday (namely, a Short Brown course in Joaquin Miller followed by a hilly 5 mile trail run with Louise in Redwood Regional).

Running warm up/down 7:00 [2] 0.4 mi (17:30 / mi)

Skyline. Chilly and breezy. Louise, still tired from the weekend, runs quite slowly, and I tried to stay behind her. After about 2 miles, though, I went ahead, did several loop backs, and turned at the 7.43 mile sign while she turned earlier. After reaching the start, did a front-of-house loop and then an extra minute to get up to 6 miles. It all seemed very easy.

Strength exercises 1:20:00 [4]

Pilates mat, theraband, hips, thigh adductors, weights. Was pretty tired after a long day out and about, and it took some doing to get myself started, but once I did, I was fine.

Snowed pretty heavily up here just before I came home. Louise snapped a photo with nearly an inch on the deck, but most of it melted when the sun came out.
