Event: City 2 Surf

7 AM

Running (Road) warm up/down 15:00 [3] 2.9 km (5:10 / km) +50m 4:46 / km
ahr:156 max:167 slept:6.0 shoes: Inov-8 Road-X 255

Over to Hyde Park, legs not feeling particularly sprightly.

Got super lucky with the toilets as there was an empty disabled portaloo facing the opposite direction to the standard ones with massive queues - result.

Running (Road) race 52:25 [5] 14.0 km (3:45 / km) +240m 3:27 / km

City to Surf

Managed to get myself a decent starting spot with ten minutes to go, maybe ten rows back from the front, and although I tried to set off steady was sucked along by the crowd until we hit the tunnel.

Was through 5km in a pretty slow 18:30 or so, and got a bit of a stitch at the start of Heartbreak Hill but was still moving along pretty steadily and reeling folk in the entire way. Just didn't feel like I had the leg power to push on, and this was very much the feeling from the top onwards as I couldn't make much headway on the groups ahead.

Was starting to tire on the last couple of km, and missed the 13km marker so was getting seriously worried about the distance to go to the finish until I checked my watch and saw there was only 700m to go, bit late to push for 52 minutes but managed to claw my way up through another group and get over the line in a decent enough time.

Thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment along the way, particularly the bands doing Rocky tunes, the trio of Elvises and the Bagpipers who were competing with a gym blaring out dance music across the road. Many high fives were had too, and the atmosphere was really fun.

All in, not bad off four weeks training and great to tick off the list, but would like to come back again and properly attack the 50 minute mark, 2016 maybe.

Up the hill towards Bondi where I jumped on a bus, which was slower than walking. Not feeling great after a few beers and sausages.

#bavarianbierrun with Andy, Ondrej & Mounty. Best Friday night out I've had in quite a while, and one of the best Sydney runs to date.

Started off at the Bavarian on York Street with a fine Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell, then headed out through the city and over the Bridge to Crows Nest for stop 1, a Löwenbräu complete with pretzels.

North under the Freeway and our first trails of the evening towards Artamon, then up to Chatswood for stop 2, a Stiegl Goldbräu and some chips.

From Chatswood headed over towards Roseville Bridge, where Mounty took us on a ridiculous loop around Echo Point just to get some beach photos, and half of us managed to get wet feet. Over the bridge and time to crack out the big headtorch for the stretch along the NOSH track before heading up and over Killarney Heights to Mounty's place for a swift pit stop 3, a Hoegaarden and some snakes on the run.

Out Mounty's back door straight into the bush for the jaunt (with a bit of bush bashing en-route when we lost the trail, standard) round towards Manly Dam. Over the road and onto the Manly trails which were the definite highlight of the evening, trail running at it's best during the day and at night they're even more fun (a couple of slight ankle turns aside) when lost in the bubble of your beam.

Popping out by the dam we headed down the creek and through the reserves, before an attempt for another pit stop was foiled by being a little late for an offie. Carried on through the streets to Manly, for the final Bavarian Bier Cafe stop (another Stiegl) of the night at the wharf but to everyone's upset had missed out on food as the kitchen was closed, our sustaining dreams of schnitzels and pork knuckles thwarted. Thankfully Andy got in a round of burritos instead

Was struggling for the final few km towards Manly once we'd come off the trails (longest run in quite a while, was glad it wasn't longer), but other than that was a great way to get a long run and a few beers in! Hardly ideal C2S prep, but running around roads (particularly with 80,000 folk) is nothing compared to great trails and entertaining chat.
