really really bad orienteering. Like I used to do a couple years ago. My absolute worst controls were 7, 11, 18, and 26. probably too tired before the race which hurt my concentration.
7 - reading map detail near the control - I dropped my compass and broke the magnifier at the start and couldn't really make out the shapes and contours; really lost concentration when I turned my left ankle bad; in retrospect I went beyond the control and north up the reentrant but badly misjudged where I was, partly because a trail along the reentrant seemed to go much farther than on the map. i was not really thinking logically here anyway.
11 - reading map detail near the control - a complex, intricate problem with a lot of details that I was too tired and too near-sighted to solve
18 - reading map detail near the control - in retrospect I realize I drifted way to the left, possibly due to a compass-reading error (eg holding the map wrong), and went through the red-barred area. couldnt see the map and nothing on the terrain matched. I don't even remember that well now.
26 - route choice / confusion in the control circle - tired; went way around to the left on the trail, which added distance and not much certainty; mistook one clearing for another and looked for the control in the wrong place
i think if there is one lesson learned here it is the value of stopping - just stop moving and reassess.
