US Masters Nationals - Bigelow Hollow State Park - F40+ (GreenY)
Not feeling super confident going into this... I've hardly done any forest events this year, with the last one being Iron Hill a few weeks ago and before that West Point! All summer was mostly sprints. But national events are fun sooooo....
Kathy and I walked around a little bit of the model map and I was feeling even less confident about my ability to match things to the terrain. Right out of the gate I stuck to the trail, going up to the break in the stone wall with the ruin and then attacking 1. So far, so good.
To 2 I continued on the trail to give myself a little more practice with reading the nearby terrain. Then I took the trail to the left, then followed the line of steepness/cliffs. I found the little blobs of green quite useful here, especially the little wedge of medium green right before the control.
Out to the big trail and along the bottom of all the ridges, to the small trail junction, then up the hill into the boulders toward 3. Looked at the clue and saw 8 meter boulder... that made it easy. There was only one huge monster out there.
Next, climbed to the top and along between the spur and the cliffs. Started doubting myself as I approached 4 and backed up to check things and reattack. GPS shows I was right on line to the control, just didn't go far enough.
Up and over the top to 5. I was worried about this and considered taking a loooooong way around, but it ended up working out just fine.
Out to the big trail, to the water stop, then in and across the swamp and up the hill to 6 picking off features.
Down to the small trail, crossed the slightly bigger trail, continued to the dot knoll and used that to attack 7. Could be seen from pretty far off.
Stupidest mistake of the day on 8. I was out on the big trail and thought I'd just take it the rest of the way in, then decided to cut the corner instead. Somehow drifted off course in there and ended up between the two swamps to the south, but noticed it looked nothing like a trail and my compass was not right. Back up to the real trail and in to the finish.
