NAOC Long - Carp Ridge & Hidden Meadow - F21-34A (Course 8)

Started out OK. Missed a little on 3. Thought I knew where I was whole way to 4, attacked twice from a known place (beaver dam), wandered about checking every dot knoll in sight, felt ready to quit. Bailed to marsh near power line and finally found it on reattack.

On to 5. This was the control I accidentally found yesterday, so you think it would have been easy. But the area seemed to look totally different this time and I did take some time to get there. 6 was close and relatively simple. Took left route to 7 which was probably dumb. My intention was to cut across the indistinct trail to the powerline, but I lost it partway and ended up in green. Another person was in there too and we both ended up trapped by a lake and some green. Had to back out and struggle over to the open. This was the second time I considered packing it in.

After that 7 & 8 weren't bad. Intended to follow fence down to 9 from the trail, but only ever found a handful of posts, so picked my way across using features. The rest were not hard with all the trails in the area, and I finally knew I would make it in time. Just very tired and with sore foot. A rough day in all. Looking forward to different terrain of the sprint.

Finished last today except for those who had DNF. No medals deserved anyway for this mess.

NAOC Middle - Carp Ridge North - F21-34A (Course 8)

Went to the warm up area on the way to start, since reading about people's experience in the model had me a little worried about the difficulty of the terrain.

Legs had no zip today, although the footing was not great in most areas (lots to trip over) so I couldn't run much anyway. Some controls were great and some were not. Made a parallel error of sorts on 3, and there was actually a bag where I ended up, but the number was not right. (I think it was one for tomorrow.) Wasted some time here trying to figure out what was going on, but did eventually regroup and find the actual control. Lost about 10 minutes, worst of the day. Went out to trail to the NE between 5 and 6, not willing to risk diving into the green. Another stupid one at 8, which was right by the trail, entering the woods too far N and then wandering even further N, hitting the wire fence again.

The biggest embarrassing mistake was getting confused in the field, completely blowing by 9, then arriving at the spectator control (10) thinking that was 9, checking the code, and having to go back.

The rest after that was pretty easy though, and I actually finished 5th of 9 starters and in cross-referencing the start list it looks like 3rd North American, though I'm not sure if that matters in the A class.

Note

Yes, I actually got a bronze medal!
