trail run race 1:15:34 [4] 10.0 km (7:33 / km)
shoes: VJ Integrators
QOC Patuxent River Trail 10K
I originally had no intentions of doing this, but my friend who was supposed to visit this weekend got sick and couldn't come down. At the last minute I needed something to do. My Mom had already signed up for this, so I signed up at the last minute and hitched a ride down.
I went back and forth on which shoes to wear, trail runners or o-shoes. Honestly, the two pairs I have both fit well and I decided to use the spikes when I heard it was muddy.
I never did a straight up running race before, so this was interesting. I tried to hang back at the start but ended up somewhere in the middle of the herd across the first field, since I felt the initial pace was pretty pedestrian. Of course, the reason for that is you need to save something for later...
The first thing that surprised me was all the people who didn't want to step in mud or water. I thought people out for a trail run would all be pretty hardcore about that stuff, but I guess not. I just splashed right through a lot of it.
The next thing that surprised me was how long I actually can run when there are people there pulling me along. I only intentionally walked 3 times, a few steps each, before reaching the first aid station. (I also had to slow down several times, such as the big downhill/uphill, because everyone else had slowed.)
When my Garmin showed 5K, out along the Nike field, I was at 37:29. I think the actual halfway point was somewhat before that, because there is no way the second half was nearly as fast as the first half.
I had to break to walk a lot more on the second half. At some point in there I caught a second wind and went blowing along passing people for a little while, but that soon ended. Most of the same people were around for this last part.
At the end I was actually enjoying it and even thought I might actually like running after all. Or that may have been the endorphins talking!
The kilometers really ticked by a lot more quickly than I thought they would, though. And the only casualty appears to be one toenail.
