Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2013

Loop round the warmup map, half in terrain and half on paths. Useful reminder that the streams here can be wide and deep and tricky to cross!
Then some drills and quicker running just before the start.

Orienteering race 1:03:00 [5] 11.12 km (5:40 / km) +70m 5:30 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2013

Compass Sport Trophy Final, Short Brown, Men 40+/20-
3rd place for the Trophy behind Marcus (58:06) and Rog (61:35), FVO job done!
9th on the course with Nick B and Andy M also ahead, plus some M18/20s, course won by Adam Potter in 54:41.

Started off okay and a safe route to the short-but-tricky #1 was one of the quickest splits. Lots of people dropped time there.
First two-thirds of the course through to #14 went pretty well, only small time loss with half of that from getting tangled up in barbed wire a couple of time.
#2 (-15s) caught in big roll of rusty barbed wire just before flag
#6 (-15s) momentary wrong turn then caught massively trying to get through barbed wire fence
#7 (-30s) bad direction out of control, far too long in the rough stuff
#10 (-10s) crossed the small gully before the control but couldn't see the pit, further right than expected
#12 (-15s) bad line from control to road so too long in terrain again, had to run down road to crossing point

At #14 I was a minute down on Marcus and a minute up on Rog. Unfortunately instead of thinking 'tricky with control pick', my thoughts were more along the lines of 'not far now so push hard'. So all that happened was I ran a bit harder and started missing in the circle and not keeping good direction. Should have recognised the signs and got back in control. About 3mins lost in the last 1/3 of the course.
#15 (-40s) stopped way short when crossed unmarked little track and mistook for the one before the control
#16 (-15s) stopped at wrong control before circle. Fiddly route with tricky flag, should have run round the big path and made it simple!
#17 (-15s) ran to wrong control before circle again, then couldn't see flag in amongst the small banks as hadn't read description....
#18 (-30s) ran across bottom of re-entrant, then came back. Could swear the flag wasn't there the first time....
#20 (-45s) momentary wrong turn again, then stood around uselessly on knolls to west of circle, wondering why the flag was nowhere to be seen...
#21 (-25s) more poor direction, luckily being the wrong side of a massive pond was a clue...

So about 4-5mins lost in total and very scrappy at the end.
All good though as a great day for FVO with a clear win (so clear we would have still won even if all our five course winners had been disqualified!)
Lots of good performances out there and glad to see so many people run well and enjoy it, even after such an early start for many of them to make the day trip!

FVO night race, Abbey Craig.
Incompetent early, couldn't find the one that was wrong, couldn't find one after that which was fine, then took it a bit easier and had an enjoyable potter round the rest.

Not there for Ochils and couldn't summon up the energy for solo reps, still a bit tired from Sunday. Steady run uni-BofA-Causewayhead-uni enough for today.
