Orienteering race 1:32:09 [3] ***** 10.6 km (8:42 / km)
spiked:0/12c

O-Ringen chasing start long race (course distance 8.2km)

i started at the back of the class with all the other mp's. Started 15sec apart but despite this did not see anyone on my course.

Back in complex wood/marsh today.

1st control was a long leg about 1.5km. took a rough bearing and ticked off the features. was going well until about halfway in. i saw the red line from no7-8 crossing the leg and thought it was a track..yes really (just shows what kind of a week i was having). this distracted me slightly because when i realised it wasn't a track i panicked a little. i lost contact of where i was and totally misjudged the distance i had left to the control. i kept making parallel errors in the area about 0.5km from the control. i couldn't relocate and got confused between the rough open and the green thinking strangley that the small young trees was the rough open when in fact it was the green. when i eventually found the rough open and realised my mistake i had almost given up considering it took me 38min to find the first control.

But i decided to fight on determined not to give up on 2 days. found no2 which was a shortish leg.

no3 was as long as no1. i stayed on my rough bearing ticking off the features and then got a little disorientated in the green in the big linear marsh close to the control. i made a parallel mistake on the hill/marsh to the west of the control. it was low visibility and again i found it hard to relocate even after re-attacking from the big marsh. eventually i found it more by luck than anything else after 24min.

it was over 30 degrees C and i was so thirsty and dehydrated i had practically no concentration or motivation to find no4, but i carried on anyway. i'm not sure where i went but after not finding it after a few minutes i decided that it was time to go back to the finish and retire , i was dsq from day 3 anyway, not that that was any consolation.

another complete mess. i 'm not sure why i was so awful this week, i think mainly from a lack of concentration due to the heat, lack of decent food from the school we were staying in and me just not being focused and having lost quite a bit of good technique and accuracy from running round easy courses in england.

Orienteering race 37:31 [5] ***** 5.7 km (6:35 / km)
spiked:9/16c

O-Ringen Middle distance

GPS distance 6.64km

Nice very fast open fell today a lot less technical and much more like england. winners were doing sub 5min/km.

very tired from previous races but managed to keep the pace up today.

spiked no1 with good rough bearing.

lost 2 min on no2, crossed the valley and ended up on the other side not too sure wich way to run..should have aimed off. i was hoping to spot the boulder close to the control but there was a tree in front of it.

lost 30sec on no3 hesitated for a while in the circle, control was behind me in a small dip.

little too low for 6 but spotted the boulder and only lost 15sec climbing up to the control.

was a little cautious through 10,11,12 but they were actually easier than they looked.

dropped too low for 13, lost a minute on running speed and this mistake.

hesitant on 14 so lost 20sec.

my best race but it was technically a lot easier than previous days and i still made a few silly but costly mistakes. pleased after yesterdays disaster but still annoyed i was sloppy on some easy legs.

O-Ringen long race

After yesterday i knew i would have to make sure my bearings were more accurate today.

no 1 was a long leg up the hill to a control on a crag in a boulder field just in the open. took a rough bearing ticking off features, got into the technical contours a few hundred metres before the control, lost contact of where i was on the map. carried on up the hill telling myself to go a bit further because it was a 1:15000 scale. got confused about how they had mapped the vegetaion changes between rough open and open. ended up at the boulder a few hundred metres too high, wasnt sure at the time that it was the boulder i thought i was at so carried on up to the path to relocate. headed back down the hill and stopped about 50m short of the crag in this very vague boulder field and eventually followed someone into the control. lost about 7min.

i was very frustrated by now so i headed up the hill to no2. drifted right because i wasn't checking my compass enough, i was still confused about the vegetation mapping, i carried on but wasn't sure where i was. realised i was needed to be on top off the large spur so headed up to the top, ended up literally 15m from the control but it was hidden by bushes so i didn't see it. couldn't relocate so headed down the hill to the path and relocated off that then found the control easily. lost about 8-9 min.

by now i was wondering wether to give up after losing at least 15min on the other GB guys or not but decided to find 3. i was also really dehydrated. couldn't find a decent attack point for 3 and again ended up missing it by a hundred metres. couldn't relocate because i found it so vague, eventually found it after wondering around for about 8min, already half given up but now decided i had lost too much time, and was too dehydrated and tired to complete the course so i jogged/walked back which took ages beacuse it was miles to the finish. really dissappointed with how i orienteered today, i had very poor technique and concentration. couln't focus on what i was doing.

Orienteering race 39:48 [5] ***** 4.1 km (9:42 / km)
spiked:6/15c

O-Ringen Middle race

GPS distance 5.15km

had a plan today of taking an accurate rough bearing as possible out of every control to minimise mistakes.

spiked no1

ran too far down the hill to no2 so lost 30sec

no4 lost 2min by letting my bearing drift and ending up on the wrong side of the hill, realised after while and ran quite a bit extra.

bit slow on 6, went to the wrong boulder on 7..another control on a boulder 50m before mine.

slow on 8

disaster on 9 lost 3 min on a very short leg. my bearing was slightly off and i just missed the control. then wondered round for a bit knowing the control was close then ran to the track to attack it again.

no11 lost 2min again i was within 20m of the control but failed to find it. stood very close trying to pick out the detail on the map.

no 12 lost 1min. went straight but faster along road. then overshot to the path and had to climb back up.

no13 lost 1min generally slow and cut in too early from the road.

no14 lost 30sec should have run along the road but i saw an elephant track and decided to cut through..very slow.]

it started off well but i got sloppy towards the end and made some big mistakes.

Event: Oringen 2008

Orienteering race 1:11:34 [5] ***** 7.9 km (9:04 / km)
spiked:6/12c

O-Ringen H18E

Long race GPS distance 11.1km
Wasn't sure what to expect. lost 4min on no1 a fairly long leg to a boulder across featureless wood with no attack point. didn't quite run far enough and eventually relocated off marsh. a more accurate bearing was needed.

no3 didn't check compass enough across marsh and veered off slightly but realised quickly but had to run further.

no4 lost 3min chasing the guy who caught me, i didn't have a plan on this shortish leg through complex contours, was about 20m away and didn't spot the control. overshot and relocated off path.

no5 long leg about 2.5km lost 3min on dave. took the safe but very long route of running along track and road but safe attack point, ran past control and lost time relocating.

no7 lost 1.5min hit road and wasn't sure where i was, was put off by loads of people running down it and not actually crossing into the forest.

no8 bad route choice..actually quicker running along road.

no11 took safe but longer route along road.

so loads of mistakes today but all of GB messed up so did okay coming 2nd out of the boys but dave 5min ahead.
