Orienteering race (Long) 1:47:51 [4] *** 15.9 km (6:47 / km) +520m 5:50 / km
31c shoes: Olway Tigers

JK Long, Braunton Burrows.

Set off fine to 1, carefully ticking off features, into the control from a safe path attackpoint and then just could not make head nor tail of the map. Fumbled around for a bit, cheesed off, before eventually stumbling upon the flag. Totally clueless to 3, missed 4, nae confidence for 5, considered giving up at 6, way short at 7. Got into things a bit more from here, especially aided by Colm Hill who seemed to be able to read the map without too much trouble. Couldn't quite keep up with him, but nearly caught him again at the end.

Think I need a magnifier.

Orienteering race (Middle) 38:12 [5] *** 5.5 km (6:57 / km) +125m 6:14 / km
23c shoes: Olway Tigers

JK Day 2, Middle Mudbath, Cookworthy Forest.

Enjoyed this wee blast - I love jumping through mud. Was a bit hesitant to 1, but after that ran hard until 8, where I got confused by the vegetation and dithered about for a bit. Then ran hard until halfway to 15 where I crossed a massive track which I just could not see on the map for ages. It was probably covered in mud.

A bit more dithering at the penultimate flag before a fairly average result suggesting I'm just not decisive enough in this terrain. Or good enough at finding flags for middle races...

Orienteering race (sprint) 18:25 [5] *** 3.3 km (5:35 / km) +40m 5:16 / km
24c shoes: Olway Tigers

JK Sprint, Bicton College

Frankly, was pants. Felt very slow and sluggish and, although things were really pretty straightforward, was never really on top of them. Didn't realise the contour interval was 2.5m so was way too high for 3, then a poor route to 5, hesitant to 6, confused to 7. Then, like a total div, got suckered into the deadend route to 13. Though it wasn't quite a deadend so didn't need to double back...

Then Craney caught me and I just about kept up....

Felt extremely rusty.

Orienteering 1:25:00 [2] *** 10.5 km (8:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudroc 290

Rather better weather than yesterday, but still absolutely freezing. Or so I thought until we set off to collect some flags in Abbey Craig. 3 layers, buff, gloves and hat perhaps a bit excessive. Fun little session though as after Abbey Craig we left Janine, Brad and jackets at the yooni and Jon and I popped over to Minewoods and got the kites there too. Think we should do a lot more of these - time to jump on the trains bandwagon?

Note

Absolutely hideous weather so Jon and I needed no persuading to skip intervals and do some car clearing out instead. Pretty knackered anyway.

Pilates 45:00 [2]
weight:68.6kg

Final Pilates class of the season. Nice. Must work on ankle flexibility which is non-existent and I'm sure is a major factor in my terrain running rubbishness.

Getting near racing weight. Until I ate copious amounts of curry that is.
