Orienteering 1:14:00 [3] 4.5 km (16:27 / km)
shoes: VJ Bold

Abominable effort! I did not think about orienteering well today, just ran around like a crazy woman...

I started OK, took an unconventional way to 1 and was going fine until I came across an enormous mesa that I could not find on my map. Ran around like crazy for 10 minutes, went right back up the hill to start again, got to the same place, worked out what it was this time, went past and got the control. VERY dismal start.

Solid and careful to 2 and almost to 3 where I came across some others and lost my head again. Crazy orienteering to 4 and 5. Took a safe way to 6, but then lost my way, overshot massively and rather than turn back navigated through the detail to get it. Solid in the end but very slow. Started out to 7 fine but could not read the map. Had no idea what was up or down... I would suggest the tracks should not be shown in this area as for old eyes I cannot separate that from the contour detail and I really needed to see the contours to understand what was going on. I lost a bit of time but did not get really lost. Saw Briohny around here, she overtook me to 8 and we were together or roundabouts until 11. This was one good section of the course for me. Through the spectator leg (were there any?) and then I ran off like mad again. Did not take the easy way to 13 and again got seriously lost and lost more time. Saw Tash, Clare & Lauren get it and was just behind them going to 14. I got distracted by the running commentary and ran off up the wrong creek, followed by the crowd. Split from them and somehow joined up with Briohny again. We were a bit lost together until we both relocated and ran off in opposite directions - she was getting 15 and me 14! I still had further trouble with 14, despite my easy approach and the previous 10 minute mistake getting to the right area. From there to the finish I got my act together. Followed Jo Allison to the last, my head could not read another thing.

Note

I felt like an absolute beginner and idiot after today. It is as if nothing has changed in over 10 years of orienteering!

It is a long time since I have been in mining terrain and I should have been beware. I should have made myself run like I did in Ireland - take time and read the map.

I am also mad that I have been saying for at least 3 months that I need to get my eyes checked before this carnival and have done nothing about it. maybe I will soon. While reading the map was not my primary problem on Sunday, it did certainly did not help me fix the problems I had created.

Orienteering 56:45 [3] 6.46 km (8:47 / km) +188m 7:40 / km
shoes: VJ Bold

A nice, steady, controlled run. Happy with my result but wished that I had run a tiny bit harder and not made the few mistakes. The mistakes were easily preventable. I really like this map and I am pleased that I managed it much better than last time.

I found the first leg quite easy and relaxed immediately after, leaving me a bit lost getting 2. Found it after a bit of scatterbrain. After that I focused well. Was slow going to 6 but spot-on, OK to 7 but lost some time at the end when things didn't look as I expected, I should have continued another 10m and all would have been fine. Again on way to 11, I came across some unexpected rocks and let them rattle me. Ran around for a bit, went right, knew what I'd done, turned around, ran back and got the control OK. Should have kept going to first time... Was extremely cautious to 13 and 14 but it did not matter.

Run 39:43 [3] 5.61 km (7:05 / km) +77m 6:38 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 14

Had intended a short run, then decided on walking then changed plans at the last minute and ran. Good call, all OK! Took it nice & easy, in Lane Cove NP with Paula while Nicole went exploring.

Quite a few big trees down.

Note

Disgusting tick #3 from (not-so) snooty Pymble. Will be avoiding the bush sections around there in the future.

These ones really hurt!

Yoga 1:00:00 [3]

A very stretchy class today which fitted perfectly for me.

Note

Massage in the afternoon. Very effective and felt all over much better. Deteriorated a bit by Wednesday, will skip running again, but on the improve I think.

Note

VERY sore back today. Probably aggravated by yesterday but did not notice it at the time. I think leg/knee and back issues all related. Need to be careful and constructive this week.
