Great fun but it got very tough (physically) towards the end.
I started well, did not understand why there was only myself and David Bray (and now I know James Lithgow went that way too) went the obvious way to 1 - especially since I had been holding a screaming Aoife until 10 sec before the start while everyone else was studying their map! David ran past the 2nd, and I couldn't find it. Fortunately Ben turned up and found it hidden under the decking. After that I had a train of people coming past. Spent quite a bit of the race having people who should have been in front come past me again. I was starting to tire at about 10km and by the first map change was feeling crampy. Had a little rest, a gel and some drinks there before continuing along. Really needed a toilet stop but every time I had one planned, one guy somehow ended up behind again. I even chose a stupid out-of-the-way way to the road crossing on purpose and he turned back and followed me there! Finally I just stopped so he had to go past... By the Victoria Rd crossing I was really suffering and unable to stretch out. I had another gel and couple of drinks there waiting for the lights to change. We then had a pack of 4 together. I doubted I would be anywhere near them for long but managed to hang on and we dropped one. I was third to the finish out of the 3 of us, but I got the moral victory by not crossing through the soccer game :)
A great idea for an event, well set and lots of fun!
... and spot on with the distance too - advertised 20km, actual GPS 19.96km.
