At Awoonga, a nice map but the hills are harder than they look and stony ground/fallen timber made moving more difficult than it should have been. Need more agility, stability and strength! Got off to a shaky start to 1 with poor map orientation out of the triangle, then never got my direction right, saved myself by spotting an obvious termite mound coming into the big gully system. Was a bit left for 3, not sure how other than too lazy to climb! 4 I went around rather than over the hill and while I was kicking myself at the time (seemed like a long way) I did execute fine. 5 I again went around and lost some time at the end, but did this leg straight when collecting controls and still lost more time. 6 was wayward to the right but lucky to catch myself at the track and spot the junction to make control entry easy. 7 was tired. 8 was good (gentle downhill). 9 was good for the leg - took an aggressive over the top approach but lost out in the circle hunting for the control much higher than it was. 10 was just tired and same for 11, 12. 13 missed the control behind a rock. Lovely sunny day out, warm when running but the wind was brutal afterwards.

Collecting controls. Tried to get some good training out of this.

Run 1:03:53 [3] 10.41 km (6:08 / km) +58m 5:58 / km
ahr:147 max:167 shoes: Kayano 25 Black

Slightly longer run from the Civic pool, swimming now up to 90 min sessions:).
With Nat, we went around the lake plus a diversion up to Parliament House and around a really nice bushy, single track there. Cut a bit short on the way back as I was again struggling to keep up and feeling weary.

Speedy run around Franklin and Mitchell with Nat while girls at gym. Chilly tonight! I was struggling to keep up.

Ski 2:50:02 [3] 17.84 km (9:32 / km) +857m 7:41 / km
ahr:81 max:130

Another sneaky ski day. Only remembered to turn watch on after first half.
Ended a bit early as cloud came down and zero visibility and getting back early meant I didn’t need to break the drive for a teleconf.

Wednesday event at The Pinnacle. Beautiful day and beautiful map. Mind not on job for the start of the race, reminding myself of what needs to get done this arvo and planning how to attack it. Wrong direction to 1, slow to 2, almost missed going to 3, settled after that until couldn't find a termite mound for 7. Fine after that but not able to run as fast as I'd like. Ankle troublesome 5-6-7 on the rocky rough ground.

Run 32:32 [3] 4.72 km (6:54 / km) +110m 6:11 / km
ahr:143 max:163 shoes: Kayano 25 Black

Just a quick one, had a deadline! Good to catch up and slog up some hills. Ankle held up very well. Another brilliantly blue day.

Ski 5:53:37 [3] 40.7 km (8:41 / km) +3166m 6:15 / km
ahr:85 max:129

Took a day off work and school in the hope that the forecast was right. The weather was perfect! Better than expected with stunning blue skies all day (except a brief bit of cloud on Mt P that we ran away from) and warmer than expected. Superb snow conditions too. Possibly best I’ve ever experienced.
Tired afterwards.

Orienteering 29:22 [3] 3.86 km (7:37 / km) +77m 6:55 / km
ahr:140 max:170 shoes: VJ Irock 2

Another mistake-riddled run. Nowhere near as bad as yesterday though.

Struggling with scale today and some of the details... Mjor problem though (again) was direction. Badly twisted ankle leaving 4 (on loose rocky ground going downhill).

Orienteering 52:11 [3] 7.1 km (7:21 / km) +191m 6:29 / km
ahr:151 max:181 shoes: VJ Bold Ugly yellow

Worst run for quite a while. Narrabundah Hill is never my favourite map and today just forced the point.
A bit of excitement (and misery) to start (snowing!) but that did not last long.
Wayward on many legs due to poor compass, poor map reading and blackberries. Left 8 in completely wrong direction and spent 5 min on the wrong slope checking every tree for a control bemoaning the fact I hate tree controls before I realised I was the real problem.
Loitered in the vicinity of 11 for a while before Eoin kindly turned up and helped me find the control. Great day!

Wednesday event at Gininderra Creek. Not looking forward to this but had to return the control set so off we went...
In the end it was quite enjoyable as the rain held off (just) and was fun splashing in the puddles most of the way.

Orienteering 58:22 [3] 7.55 km (7:44 / km) +211m 6:47 / km
ahr:154 max:187 shoes: VJ Bold Ugly yellow

I thought this was an OK run (mostly) but got a rude shock at the end with a no result. Apparently I hadn't punched the start (I had, which was part of my issue going to 1...) but it transpires that I must have punched the SIAir-check which was apparently on the same stand as the start...
So anyway, I went the wrong route choice to 1 but executed OK, too low leaving 1 on way to 2 and so missed the nice track run, good through to 5 but on way to 6 got a bit bored with the track running and made a poor decision to abandon it to cut straight and ended up trapped by the green. A bit low to 7, a bit slow to 8, got a prickle in my finger on way to 10 and had to stop for some urgent surgery to remove it. Lost a bit of time doing that and then wobbling along after, lost my marbles going to 12 for no reason, Got caught by Grace there (and Eoin too although I never saw him). Then ran hard to 14 keeping up with them. Blasted way from 14 heading straights to 15, should have gone the road.

Mt Ainslie North. Got off to a shocking start, followed paths and took all the wrong forks. Then when nearing the control, I just went up to where the people were instead of heading to where I thought the control should be (and was). Settled down after that but struggled with a few hills, the prickly green and some rough bits. Found some really nice Peterdine-esque sections where I took slightly modified routes just to reminisce. Damp, mushy and slimy underfoot in some places, lovely and springy in others :)

Rest of controls and mapping some point features... feeling tired but ran in the bush most of the way as its so nice out there, lost of water and all the marshy areas are actually really nice and soft :)
Beautiful afternoon, glad I made it out after getting waylaid early this morning.

Run 8:25 [3] 1.13 km (7:28 / km) +14m 7:01 / km

Slow jog across to the map. A bit weighed down with flags and a bit to soon after coffee.

Orienteering 1:43:29 [3] 7.41 km (13:58 / km) +141m 12:45 / km
ahr:127 max:164 shoes: La sportiva

Putting out controls. Used MapRun which was a great way to check I had the right codes! It wasn’t super accurate but at least I knew what I was doing the times it went off early/late. A few uncertain placements so I sent Eoin out later to check (fortunately). Two map corrections needed too!
2 PM

Orienteering 36:27 [3] 3.76 km (9:41 / km) +118m 8:23 / km
ahr:139 max:164 shoes: La sportiva

Control pick-up run. Only got a few as Radford was using some later. Unfortunately, there was a version control problem with my Radford course and control pick-up. I made the Radford course shorter but harder, so ended up picking up the difficult controls, not the far away controls. So they had to find the difficult spots without flags and I have further to go tomorrow.... Not so far though as Jarrah got a few for me :)

Ski 1:35:24 [3] 6.98 km (13:40 / km) +433m 10:26 / km
ahr:82 max:123

Piked on another XC outing after rain overnight and still raining this morning. Aoife also pretty out of energy so did not want to push things. Tried a bit of downhill but it was also highly unpleasant, starting off with ice on chairlift seat and then dripping from icicles above our heads all the way up. We just did a few t-bars after the first run, but with little visibility we struggled. Came back very early. Saturated.

Ski (XC) 48:08 [3] 2.67 km (18:01 / km) +43m 16:40 / km
ahr:100 max:131

2.5 km loop with Aoife to remember how to do things :) Hard going with not much track set on this section. Lots of sink holes and lots of new snow. Nice a grippy made going up relatively easy, but going down quite slow.

I introduced Aoife to cutting through, which she found fun, yet frustrating, falling every few m, buried in snow. For once, I managed to stay upright, and even managed to turn!

Ski (XC) 1:07:40 [3] 5.9 km (11:28 / km) +213m 9:43 / km
ahr:113 max:142

Pretend SkiO with my score, MapRun course. A bit boring for the professionals, but fine for me. I just did the 5 km loop with a few extras. My original plan would have been sensational, but I didn't do that. Slow going and hard work, especially towards the end.

To and from the start.

Orienteering 33:12 [3] 3.68 km (9:02 / km) +46m 8:30 / km
ahr:137 max:156 shoes: La sportiva

These shoes need retiring and I probably do too.

Course checking and testing of my MapRun setting abilities. The MapRun part seemed OK. Used the G version on my watch which meant I theoretically should not need to carry the phone around :) A couple of the control sites were a bit dodgy and I really mucked up a couple of times. Once right after I thought I've finally got this inside out hill/gully system sorted!

Beautiful afternoon outside after a couple of dire days.

Red Hill Wednesday event. Pretty good course. Started wrong direction, not really understanding where the triangle was and ran up the wrong gully. Lost a bit of time on9 climbing a fence unnecessarily (twice! -there was a gate, plus I never needed to cross it). Also lost time on 11 (dodgy control placement) and 12 (uncertain whether 11 was in the right spot - it wasn’t). Did not punch controls. Practicing good flow just touching the flags was good training I think.

Little Black Mt loop with Nat. We left just as the fog lifted, so chilly but warmed up nicely by the end.

Wow. Tuggeranong Hill =tough! I walked about 80% of today. Not because it was steep (it was!) but so green and treacherous underfoot. It was all I could do sometimes to stay upright, making forward progress a bonus. A few bingo controls slowed me down as well, but I got most of those. Hesitant on 1 and 2, a bit left on 3 but pulled up in time, 4 good, 5 a physical challenge, 6 very physical and despite trying to tend upwards I was still very low when I got to near the control, 7 fine I thought I’d be able to run it but despite being more open to footing had me scared, 8 ok, I ran some of this leg !, 9 was ok navigationally but the white I headed for was littered with fallen timber so I had to deviate through the light green... nearly trod in a dead fox trying to follow an animal track through, then came upon a wall of prickle green, could not go back (fox) so had to channel Willy Kulmann at Walyunga to clamber over that with no feet on the ground, 10 I pulled up early and lost 3 minutes getting myself sorted, 11 was looking early again but got it fine, 12 was left, 13 high, and ok from there through to the finish (finally flatter and less rocky). It’s a long time since I wished for ankle braces, they would have been helpful today! Fog lifted as we got into the car to co e home. It was eerie out there, quiet and by myself in fog most of the way! Ran with gloves after suffering from numb fingers yesterday. A first time for everything and great choice.

Ankle was sore all morning but all soreness evaporated during this run! Amazing.

Went OK , a few slow bits up hill, but tried quite well and when Kathie Dent caught me at 16 I tried to stay with her. She was in sight at the finish, mainly due to my slightly straighter routes paying off :). But then I recorded an MP - did not punch the gate control? I have no recollections. I know I went there, I know I knew what 15 was on when they said I had a problem on that control, but did I punch without checking a beep? No idea, too focussed keeping moving! Did not appear to happen with anyone else.
