Another any run is better than no run run. Quite enjoyed myself touring the single tracks on foot. A nice change.

Met Nat who was commuting over to Mitchell, lovely out on Bruce Ridge. A bit nervous at times and not sufficiently so at others especially when I was getting tired closer to home. Stacked it on Happy Wanderer which I'd made a detour to ride along, but relatively uninjured. Watch was stopped from red bridge to part way through Bruce Ridge, probably about 3km.

Bad mother award. Aoife actually asked to come, but I said it would be too far. In hindsight we could have done a bit and come back. I was probably in shock that she’d made the suggestion and did not process it well!

Aoife wanted to do Orange 2 from Wednesday. Another beautiful day at the Pinnacle. We had one blurry map printed from fb and my map with the other course drawn over. She refused to take a compass which is not good at her skill level. Lost interest part way around... then we diverted for a view fin the top of the hill - worth it! Not convinced she benefitted from the excursion, but good to spend some time out together :)

Swim 5 [3] 0.01 km (8:20 / km)

First swim of the season. Not as bracing as expected. Quite nice really. Needed to clear my head after reading an annoying report from work.

Run race 1:00:18 [3] 9.86 km (6:07 / km) +259m 5:24 / km
shoes: New Balance

Run with the Wind at Woodlawn Wind Farm.
My second visit to this wind farm and fortunately opposite weather conditions to that time. My previous visit was wet and windy, today was perfect sightseeing conditions and good for solar production :).

Very happy to last the distance, the climbs were tough and gravelly surface not hip friendly. Fortunately the views were spectacular and running past the turbines majestic, with the blades just spinning in a light breeze.

Aoife thought I should have tried harder to get under the 1 hour. I had already decided much earlier that was an impossible mission, but a slightly sooner than expected finish line got me a bit closer than I had calculated.

With Nat. Started out with a dodgy calf but that was OK after a while. I seemed to pass it on to her though so we walked back the last little bit. Nice and warm out!

MTBO 1:40:54 [3] 16.54 km (9.8 kph) +548m
shoes: Sidi MTB

Shocker of a ride on all fronts, could not ride well, made quite a few route choice mistakes, could not clip in ... all in all, not my finest hour and a bit. Had decided relatively early that my back was not going to survive the hills and was working out whether I'd pull out after 10 or 12 (both took you back past the finish). But part way to 9 my hip got in on the cranky action, I knew I'd come a dumb way and there was an option to turn around and have a relatively gentle climb back to the finish. So that's what I did. Quite happy with the decision, annoyed with myself afterwards, but realistically I was going to be out for 2.5 hours+ and am in no condition to do that justice. Would not have enjoyed the end.

MTBO 55:22 [3] 12.34 km (13.4 kph) +208m
shoes: Sidi MTB

Great course on a nice area. 2 route choice errors and 2 execution errors. Back did not like slog up to the last control. Took it nice and cruise and really enjoyed it out there. New pedals super annoying. Most time losses probably related to spending so much time trying to get in. Rode unclipped half the time! SI Air great fun.

Friday Oct 12, 2018 #

Note

Finally everything is feeling normal again. Back has been very annoying and stiff joints for last 2 weeks.

Topping off my week of dodgy runs! I thought I was doing OK today but got a bit too sure of myself at times and let my concentration slip. 8, 12, 13 and 14 were all significant time losses. 8 I knew I would be 1 gully left (and was). 12 I could not read the map and took a 50/50 choice as to which side of the fall the gully would be. A N/S might have helped here. 13 I was tired and went low rather than over - dumb. 14 I ended up on the wrong set of features. In hindsight that was because I backtracked out of 13 due to some traffic and never recorrected that bad direction. Then piece da resistance - I was so cautious making my way down the steep rocky slope to 15 and 16 I gave away the win. Not that I deserved it Well Done Cathy!

We hadn't planned to come to this event but had to come and pick up Aoife so were here. A bonus run and win on a nice enough map but would have liked something else. Not a good day running for me but obviously everyone else had a worse time. One of my worst legs I got the fastest split (how did that happen?!), my other bad leg was due to choosing not to wallow in Clare's wake as she ran away from me on the track, so I chose to bash through green instead. It was worse green than I had been in previously and insanely slow but I managed to navigate through it fairly accurately. Lucky!

An even worse run than yesterday. Thought I was going OK but blew 7 by misreading control number. Ran past, around and back before rechecking my descriptions. From there ran off 90degrees the wrong way so more time lost... Really struggling for motivation for a bit after that but kept going as best I could.

Looking at splits after, it seems I need to do a warm up as I was getting better towards the end. Devastated to be many minutes behind, shows I need to do some faster training some how....

Also, not sure the point of/need for the fake fences. The courses would have been equally as good without, and it must have been a lot of work to plan, map and set up accurately. The school itself presented enough challenge without these. And they are difficult to read. Maybe if they are a necessity, they should just be mapped as per normal impassable. With my hip, tight corners make sprints really risky and these unnecessarily added to that.

VERY long drive home afterwards. 11 hours +. Remind me not to do this again.
