Little Black Mountain on an orchid hunting expedition. Came home with what I thought was an impressive selection of photos. :) Ran the little path over the top of the mountain for the first time. Tough, but enjoyed this one (apart from the annoying logs someone has put across the path every few m, presumably to deter bikes).

Not quite sure why I entered the longer course, but managed it OK. Fun course with lots of nice running sections. Saw a variety of people through the course. Caught Mark at 1, then saw him again plus Paula at 2. Decided not to get dropped by them running the track to 3 so took a bit of a crazy route, slow but happy enough. Saw Nea leaving 3 (the wrong way) she caught back up at 4. Ross Stewart caught me at 3 and I saw him on and off for most of the rest of the course. I was by myself at 8 and 9 but Paula re-caught me at 10. She went a different way to 12 but we got there together. Finally she ran away from me on the nice downhill from 13 -14-15 - finish.

A bit of checking for course setting and mapping MTBO. Rode some really nice single tracks, plus one really awful one. Don't think I ever want to Romper Room again. Have now done once down and once up and neither is doable with my skills :). All the rest was great fun. Cold after!

A very chilly run with Nat. Cold before you added the wind chill bonus! Better than last night though (I.e. not raining). Snow on the mountains so quite pretty when we could see them. Got a few crampy bits, likely from being so cold.

Wednesday lunchtime at Bruce Ridge. A bit cold and showery but did not notice while running. Lots of orchids out!

Jogged across to Questacon to get a street series map. Not enough time to do the event this morning...plus a bit tired.

Warm up? run to the event. On and off again all morning as the rain and weather looked miserable. By happy coincidence, Nat let me know she was going to run anyway about 10 seconds after I had finished a chunk of editing, so it was opportune just to go. Glad I did, quite nice running, although the hills seems tough and the mushy ground was a bit challenging at times.

Orienteering 29:01 [3] 4.45 km (6:31 / km) +28m 6:19 / km

Sprint at Weston Creek School. Fun course. I got quite lost looking for 11. Had to flip my map over to work out I was at 28, then 29 and then find 11! A minute lost there. Then a bit slow through a few controls. Feeling better on the second loop in the school, and then Nat and I punched the last pivot together. I pretty well knew where the final 3 controls were so took off at my fastest pace. I was very lucky that Aoife was out cheering me on and reminded me about the 4th last control! I lost 20 seconds there and waved bye to Nat as she continued on her merry way. But Aoife cheering made me try a bit harder, and SI Air saved me some vital milliseconds, so much so that I caught back up at the last control and was ready for a last ditch sprint to the finish, knowing full well that I'd need super powers to pass my nemesis :) But Nat turned back the wrong way, unsure about the cross ability of the green, so a bit of a fizzer :(.

Great course at the Cork Oaks/Snowgums. Enjoyed myself today. A little bit of time lost at 13, some poor directions in the Cork Oaks (with was surprisingly fun) and a few sub optimal routes but all pretty good. Seem to have recovered from last night's woes.

With Nat, from gym. A bit of a fail as I was feeling fragile after a very late night (early morning) followed up by a very long day. Sore back plus insult of insults, my nose is sore for having glasses perched on it for too long a time...

Wednesday at Mt Painter. Hilly! Not a good start when I did not find the start until 200m past it. Reasonably ok. Few few poor rout choices and a bit high at 3. All else ok apart from my lack of strength up hill.

Run 30:14 [3] 5.22 km (5:47 / km)
ahr:150 max:169 shoes: Kayano 25 Black

I was pretty tired yesterday (a bit lucky it was too rainy for another ski). Managed to get myself going this morning, started slow and settled into a good rhythm eventually. Just made 30 minutes and not too much longer. Not sure what happened to GPS trace.

Finally ventured out for another backcountry ski adventure. Due to the lack of snow (a lot has disappeared in just 5 days!) we were a bit limited for options, so quite similar to last year. Andy as a guide this time. Great fun, and after the first couple of turns even the descents were exhilarating - a big turn up from last year. Some superb down sections, if only they were a bit longer, but that would be more climbing! And the weather was pretty great too - not too hot, not cold, rain and wind held off.

Left just after 11 following a busy morning, made it onto the snow around 2:30, so not time for much other than to ski from Perisher across to Guthega. Got the last ride on Freedom. No snow on Norwegian trail so quite a long walk to the lodge (but easier going down than up which is what Eoin and the girls needed to do the next morning).

MP. Missed 17 and couldn't be bothered going back for it after a very ordinary run. Had already mistaken 12 for 11 and had to back-track that section as a consequence. Running holding glasses did not help with the map reading. Need a functional solution. Misty rain.

Another last minute change of plan saw us go skiing again. Got a lift with Nadine so no driving, but hard work sitting in the car :).
A great day, warm after a cold night so icy then soft, but found some fun patches. Tired and sore after!

Orienteering 56:17 [3] 5.96 km (9:27 / km) +203m 8:04 / km

A very tough slog today. Hills were steep and slow going!
Looks like I made a mistake on 9, was just trying to find a clear path through, also 13 and again this was mainly poor route choice and then getting stuck by rocks etc. At 13 I stopped to help out a friend of Aoife’s and lost a bit of time on the next leg. Really lost time on 16 by staying too high. From there lost momentum and was having trouble reading map - this happens when I’m tired. Very pleased to be finished!

Mulligans 'not very' Flat. Although having said that, the contours were worse on paper than on the ground. Ran OK. Lost confidence going to 1 (lack of contours on the ground!) but eventually got it. OK then through until leaving 6 where I saw the fence and not the direction. Ran according to that and ended up heading totally the wrong way. Had to backtrack as the only way across was via a gate. Then missed 7. I think I was a the right spot but the control was back and up the hill. 8 was wayward - probably because I was a bit off from the 7 control location. 9 was just tough in vague, flattish nothing terrain where you could not see and running freely was difficult after the lovely clear running earlier. All good.
