Orienteering 1:30:00 [3]

Tio Mila. 1st leg for Lillomarka 2.

Mass start was a bit crazy and spent the first bit folding and planning (the really long) number one. Had this done by about half way down the run out, so opened up a bit for the rest, wary of getting too much oxygen debt. Pack split massively on the way to number one, I got in the pack that was going on my route and stuck in there, pushing right at the front. Was near the front at this point but there were so many different routes it was hard to know what was fastest. Was clean through the next few legs and realised I was right at the front of the pack, running with the big boys. Felt good and in control. Then disaster. My light died, so I followed the pack to the track stopped and got out my back up, turned it on only for it to die when I tried to put it on. Swore. Alot. Spent the next five minutes or so fiddling with connections and batteries trying to get a light to work. Streams of people flying past. I was dropping from top 10 to 300thish. Threw my map away at one point and my compass went flying. More swearing. Map retrieved I was almost resigned to a walk back when I decided just to ask passers by for their spare. Luckily one of the first passer bys was Alex Rothman who very kindly handed over his spare, all be it with a warning of if mine dies you are in trouble. Saved the day. By this point it was all I could do to get in the train and hope it dropped me off at the right place. It didn't but I didn't waste much time figuring out where I was and was into the control with maybe a minute lost with the miss, 30-45secs trying to get used to running whilst only being able to see 5 feet in front of me and 5-6 minutes of swearing and lamp fiddling. Was very positive on the next few controls, like I was at the start and was catching good ground. Then on the third long leg I got caught in a shitty route through the terrain which must have lost me a chunk to anyone who found nicer running, but hit the control bang on. Hit all of the next ones bang on too and while I was struggling to see with the petzl when there was a big lamp around me, I was going through alot of people. Missed one other control before the end but only by 30secs or so, just got distracted by folk running into the higher gaffle. Just focusing on hitting the controls and running hard when possible. Was orienteering very well. Came in in 160 something, 11 mins down. Really gutting considering the amount of time I spent stationary trying to get a lamp to work. But still one of the best experiences ever. Just so good. Also my second leg runner had a light malfunction so we broke three lights in two legs.
