Orienteering 2:10:00 [3]

Some warm up then 2 hours on the course.

Physical: C
Technical: C for route planning, B+ for good execution of poor route choices.
I was so put off by climbing that I made a number of unfortunate route choices. In the end, I didn't save that much climb, punished myself with many minutes of running along hillsides in the rocks and veg. instead of trails, and made the legs more navigationally difficult that they needed to be. Finished tired but feeling better than at the Pig or West Point.

Turns out that this was the best of my three A meets this spring, which is a bit annoying. On the bright side, maybe recovery is on the horizon (the results of last week's blood test show that my white-BC count is now on the low end of normal range). I'm sure that there are some good things to learn and build upon from the season's events but I don't have a full understanding of what these things are yet. But I have some thoughts and after a bit more time taking it easy, I'll saddle up and restart my quest for orienteering world domination.

Orienteering 1:15:00 [3]

Short visit to the model area. The low visibility and subtle contours had me a bit cautious. I have made errors in every post-sprint TT middle I have run because I come out of the gate with my sprint legs. Thus, I was determined to watch my speed, be careful and plan ahead.

Physical: B
Technical: A-
I think that the technical terrain slowed people down or caused them to make mistakes, so my slow legs weren't too much of a handicap. I took great pains to maintain map contact and plan my routes well and it paid off with a decent result. Nav. wise I think this is one of my better middle distance efforts. On the way out of C14 I started to think about the finish and then "Uh oh... this isn't right... where am I?" Luckily, my direction was good, I pressed on a bit at a walk and spotted the control to my right. Very relieved. Paused before leaving C15 to make sure my head was back into navigating and planning. I felt tired on the long run to C17; should have been able to burn that one up at a faster pace.

Orienteering 1:07:00 [3]

25 min of easy running around the sprint model event and a bit on the long model. 10 min of WU before the sprint. 10 min of CD after the sprint.

Sprint:
Physical: B (Though much better than I expected.)
Techical: B+
Fun course, beautiful campus, fun race. Slow on C1 getting oriented. Some poor route choices led to loosing seconds here and there but nothing major. Had to pass PG twice. On the long leg to C11 I went high and when I got to the gap between the dorms I didn't see the spiral staircase; I just assumed I read the map wrong, bailed, and went around the building. Climb seems to stop me dead (mental maybe). For the first time all spring I had decent turnover and speed the last half dozen or so legs; I didn't feel fast but my splits were good.

This sprints ranks with the PTrot event we had a KU in '06 as my favorite campus/city sprints. Level changes, passages, some long legs for speed, and very fun. Lehigh U. was way too warm and non-icy though.

Run 5:00 [3]

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

Physical: C. Technical: B+
"Sprint" at SMU. Slightly faster than long run pace and inserted some strides. This workout was originally planned to be at race effort and run this past Sunday.

Well, that's that. I'll pack the legs and lungs that I have and run them as hard as I can. I'm not going to think about them anymore and just focus on the map and terrain.
