Decided to do a test run for the DVOA NRE coming up. I wanted to know if I could jog at least parts of a sprint and then be able to do a short middle course. So I designed a 1.9k sprint at Daddy Allen and a 2.5k middle at Lost Lakes. Figured the drive between the two maps would even approximate the drive between the venues at the NRE.
This is Stage 1 - the sprint (plus the walk to and from the car). I was 26:37 for the course which I was happy with especially since I had some UsynligO issues. For some reason the app played the "you finished" song at the first control. I stopped and dug out my phone to see what was going on. It correctly said I was on my way to #2 so I hoped it was just some randomness and continued on. It worked fine after that so who knows. Made one big error - I totally overran a turn on the road. I guess I was so excited that I could sort of run that I just lost contact with the map. In looking at the course now I can't believe I messed that up - there were all sorts of things like cabins on both sides of the road to tell me where I was and I just ignored it all. Everything else was fine and I was able to jog in a lot of places.

Then I drove over to Lost Lakes and had a bit to eat and drink and then went out for Stage 2. This time includes the walks to start and back from finish; I was 1:02:50 for the 2.5km course. It was a fun course but I managed to mess up a bit. Just couldn't seem to stick to my compass today. I recovered reasonably well though in each case where I was off so that was good. I was getting tired by the end and getting up and over logs was an effort, but I tried to keep pushing and don't think I slowed down much until I finished.
This was a lot of fun and I'm feeling optimistic that I will survive Bellevue and Iron Hill. I doubt I'll be all that competitive but I think my knees will be fine.
Spent about 90 minutes hauling paving blocks and trying to lay them out in a reasonable way where the old patio was. There were still a handful of blocks left there that went under and around some steps and basement windows that showed how they used to be placed but it was a chore to get everything to line up and fit. I've got about 20 more to move but I did all the hard parts and so the rest will be easy to put in place. So not a normal strength workout, but I think I worked just as hard.

It was such a beautiful day that I scrapped all my plans and went orienteering instead. Using UsynligO did the Short Stumble course from several weeks ago just making it in under the 3 hour official time limit. I had visited all the sites at least twice before and some four times - first on a general scouting mission, then to hang streamers, then to put in stakes and finally hanging controls - but I had never done them in the order of the actual course. So while the actual control sites were very familiar, almost all the routes to them were not.
The weather was perfect. Unfortunately the bugs were still out.
I only walked but tried to push the pace. I'm beat!
