Note

I'm designing courses for the night-O and Sunday event for the Hickory Run Training weekend. As usual, Orange is tough to set on the Sand Spring Lake map. I got to thinking that perhaps we should encourage people going out on Orange to use the UsynligO app along with actually using epunch to punch at each control. This way, if they struggle, they could pull up the app and use the hints to help them get to the next control. And no reason to limit it to Orange.

UsynligO course at Haystack set by Greg. About 1:33 on the course, the rest the walk to start and back from finish.

I was very slow but relatively clean. Fish-hooked #2 a bit when I realized I was one hilltop to the south on the way in and took a not very straight route to #3 on purpose to avoid climbing up and down some rocky ridges that I remembered as not very friendly to my knees from a previous outing. Everything else was pretty much just go straight and look for micro routes that avoided blueberry as much as possible.

Thanks, Greg, for setting the course and waiting for me to get out to the woods! So grateful to have these maps and courses to go play on.

Nice outing on the Hickory Run 1:15000 map visiting two of the Shades of Death Rogaine controls. These were the two I debated about trying to go get on Sunday. The first one was easy but I missed the route to the 2nd one at first and explored some open woods to the northeast of the control for a while before figuring out I really had been where I thought and I needed to find a way to keep heading east. Pushed through a bit a green and then saw the open area full of huge boulders that I needed to follow. That was tough going scrambling over those rocks but eventually made my was to the end of the big cliff. Debated alternate routes back but eventually opted for just going back the way I came. Managed to find a slightly less rocky route a little lower on the hillside so the return trip was a good bit faster than heading in.

Very glad I didn't attempt this on Sunday. It was hard going today on fresh legs and thinking reasonably clearly. I doubt I'd have been successful on Sunday after I'd already done 6 hours.

A neighborhood walk. It wasn't raining when I started but it came after about 10 minutes or so. And my watch didn't want to pick up the GPS satellites so I just started it after 5 minutes. So no track. How does it know how far I went if there is not track though?

Still a bit sore from Sunday but I got through this. Took a few more breaks than I might have on a better day but that was also because it's so hot out. My workout space is in my garage. It's a bit cooler than outside but not by much.
