Went orienteering at Hickory Run. Did not orienteer well but it was still good to get out. Had planned this outing for a while - it was the only day that worked for both me and Dennis and the idea was to go to HR then stop at Dennis's on the way home for a socially distant dinner. It was rainy in the morning but I was looking forward to the day so decided to go anyway. I sat out one downpour in the car and then told myself to HTFU and get out there.
Did the short advanced UsynligO course that Greg A designed. I was having trouble reading the map - my eyes have really gone downhill fast for close reading - and the rain didn't help and the app wasn't always chiming in the first time I would get to the right location which would have me second guessing myself and checking out nearby things only to return and then have the app acknowledge I was in the right place. So it was not a great start and my compass work was horrible but I was reading features well enough to figure out where I was and moving reasonably well. And then I totally lost it and got confused and got turned around and really struggled. I almost just called it a day and was ready to quit but I knew where I was and I decided to try one more time and perhaps I was 10 feet to one side or the other to where I had been before and finally the app was happy. So I decided to finish but I was quite dispirited for a bit.
But dinner with Dennis was great so all definitely worth it.
And now perhaps I will be motivated to do some course setting for the Stumble and World Games. For a while I just didn't want anything to do with orienteering.
