orienteering race 1:09:23 [3]

Left the trail to early for #1 but I saw a way down the hillside and I don't like to pass those up not knowing if it will be okay later on but then didn't angle enough over to the spur I wanted. Got into the green and took a minute to sort out - pretty stupid mistake. AP says it cost me two minutes which sounds about right. The rest of the course went well; I went crossed back over the stream and took the trail on the right side to #4 and then up the nose and dropped in. Most everything else was straightforward. Loved the long leg where I just kept the hill on my left and ran to the ridge and then ran the ridge. It was tough getting over the big downed trees along the ridge but it was pretty cool to go along there. The wind was coming up the slope and howling but it was just gorgeous. Ran some but not much - knee just not up to it. And I'm not in very good condition. But other than the first control pretty much spiked everything.

Had fun at the very end as a cadet came and punched the next to last control with me then took off for the go control. I was stunned to see him still at the go control as I approached thinking maybe he had some other control in between but then realized he was stopping and resting and taking deep breaths to try to win the finish split. As I came up to the control I yelled "Ready, Set, Go" and he punched and took off. Valerie tracked down who it must have been based on who punched the control right before me and sure enough he tied for the win for the fastest chute time.

orienteering race 22:00 [3]

Had fun mostly walking but doing some jogging around the sprint course. Knees not great and I didn't want to blow them up before the long and middle. Not sure if I took the best routes or not but I was happy with what I did since I mostly just wanted to have fun. AP says no errors so I'll assume they were fine. Map seemed a little funky in one place - relative distances didn't seem right - but not really a problem.
