orienteering race 1:38:54 [3]

DVOA local event at Mt. Penn - red course, 6.18k
I almost didn't go since I have never enjoyed a course on this map but Bob Meyer set an excellent course and I had a great time. I wasn't concentrating very hard and so I wandered a bit on a couple of controls. I totally confused myself out of #7 - I was expecting to see the terrain do one thing and it did something else and I couldn't reconcile things but since I was heading for a big field I didn't worry about it. I still can't figure out what I did but I hit the field not on the side I intended and could not get my head around the fact that I was 90 degrees off so had to stand in the corner of the field and force myself to adjust things in my brain - it just did not want to accept things. Weird.

Nothing hurt. Yay. The ground is pretty rocky there though and I didn't feel comfortable running in too many places.

trail 1:02:13 [3]

TNT - Media. Walked over to the trail head. Tried jogging a bit - felt okay. So started running at a very, very easy pace - still felt okay. So ran a shorter loop than everyone else but still hit 3 of the 4 hills and managed to keep moving the whole time. Very pleasantly surprised!

map hiking 3:00:00 [1]

Course setting at HR. Spent about 4.5 hours in the woods but a lot of it was standing around. The courses are constrained by not using the terrain for the team trials next May but still having to start/finish at or near Camp Daddy Allen. The thick mountain laurel and rhododendron in places doesn't help either. There are also some really fantastic pieces of woods but it's hard to get to them while keeping the course lengths reasonable and the courses fun and interesting. I think I need just one more day up there to finish everything. Maybe two if things don't go well.

Am hoping the park will unlock one gate so I can drive to put out water and then again to pick up controls. Otherwise, it's going to be some serious slogging with a full pack...

Note

Knee was so-so. Sore to start the day but once I got off the trail and into the woods it was pretty good. So fine for a lot of the day as I was in the woods mostly, but then again while walking back to my car on the trail at the end of the day it started hurting a lot again.

Wicked cramp in my inner thigh after I got back to my car and had sat for a bit and then tried to get up.

Note

So this was a total, total bummer. Went out with the TNT crowd, walked the road, started jogging when we hit the trail, but within a minute or two I could tell my knee (the brace one) just did not feel right. And it didn't get better - which it sometimes does as I warm up. Everyone went on ahead and I walked some and tried to run, but even walking was painful and running was a definite no-no. Limped to the bottom of the usual trail up to home (we had come down a different way intending to run the hillsides and not the drive) and remembered the last time it had hurt this badly running up the hill was fine. So I tried that. Running up was okay - not pain free, but not bad - but the back down was another story. Did that three times - 1:30 up and 3:00 down - but the last down really hurt. So called it a night and just stretched a bit and walked a bit and waited for others to finish.

So I can't think of a single thing that would have made it suddenly hurt like that. It's just totally depressing. Perhaps it was my bold comment that I haven't needed any ibuprofen in a while. ;) For good measure, I took several when I got home and iced for a while and it feels fine now.

strength & stretching 20:00 [1]

Decent workout although I got sidetracked watching the end of a movie and didn't do the stretching or icing I had intended which is really stupid since stretching and icing are a perfect thing to do while watching the end of a movie.
