orienteering race 1:29:28 [3] *** 4.8 km (18:38 / km)

DVOA local event; Stuckey Pond Green course.

Went out early so I could work epunch the rest of the day. Sort of clean: I was never not where I thought I was BUT... there were lots of hesitations just to be sure I was where I wanted to be, very slow to the first control as it took a bit to adjust to the 1:15 scale, didn't read the clue sheet twice so navigated to the feature I wanted to hit but not the one the control was on, didn't look at the "big picture" to realize I could go hard as there was an obvious collecting/catching feature I could use, and so on, so not a very good result. Good thing I'm running the shortest leg at Venla!

A really fine course on a super map.

Note

Need to spend lots of time in the woods like this if I want to start doing rogaines again. Legs were tired enough that I wasn't picking up my feet by the end and almost fell a few times.

More control streamering for the AR. Today was one two + hour loop in the morning and then lots of 30 minute out and backs from parking areas and then one more longer loop at the end of the day. Took a really stupid chance trying to follow what I thought was the mapped trail but it degenerated into a 6 inch wide path half-way up a very, very steep hillside above a rocky stream. I went far enough that I really didn't want to go back the way I came but I didn't want to keep going either, so I climbed up the rocky slope by pulling myself up using the mountain laurel and rhododendron. One mistep or a branch coming loose and I'd have been done for. Like I said - really, really stupid. And when I got to the top of the hill, well, there was the trail I had intended to be on, nicely marked and maintained. The racers got the benefit - that episode at the end of a long day exhausted me enough that when the trail looped back, I didn't feel like bushwhacking too far and so instead of going to the big stream junction as planned I just picked a reentrant not too far past the trail for that last control location.

Streamering controls for the orienteering section of an upcoming 24-hour adventure race. I really hope some good orienteers show up for the race - per the race director's instructions the control locations aren't too hard (a mix of orange, yellow and white) but there are definitely route choice options - through the woods or way, way, way around along linear features.

running 53:12 [3]

TNT - lagging behind Dasha and Sandy. Felt sluggish and the time shows it. But I did 5 which I haven't done in quite a while.

warm up/cool down 25:21 [1]

Walking down to the drive and back up again.

trail 1:00:13 [3]

TNT - Monday version, Media
Ran on my own. Did the normal Red loop from last spring and "ran" all the hills. Sofa!

warm up/cool down 13:57 [1]

Walking to and from the trail head. It helps my knees to ease into things...

strength & stretching 11:00 [1]

Good stretching while icing.

Note

Multi-course feast afterwards! Excellent meal.
