Road Running warm up/down 21:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:30 / mi) +29m 10:03 / mi

O-course Training race (Ansonia CT) 1:06:49 [3] 5.82 km (11:29 / km) +165m 10:04 / km

More training weekend. Handicapped race in good New England forest. Found it hard to run in rough forest and hillsides this early in season.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley Trails) 43:00 [2] 7.58 km (5:40 / km) +24m 5:35 / km

Home late afternoon in time for a little skiing. Felt tired and cold (this is spring?) and quit rather early.

Friday Mar 25, 2011 #

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley Trails) 58:00 [2] 11.0 km (5:16 / km)

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley Trails) 56:43 [2] 11.36 km (5:00 / km) +8m 4:59 / km

Field trails still okay, but thin around the edges in the usual spots. Another week?

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley Trails) 58:13 [2] 10.16 km (5:44 / km) +37m 5:38 / km

Over slight crust from Monday's storm. Not too smooth, but okay for a quick workout. More snow expected tonight, then will need to touch up the grooming.

Continuing to work technique. Knees in, ankles forward, aggressive stance. Short intervals hammering hills. Legs feeling a little tired; good distance this week.

Road Running (Chester) 53:35 [3] 6.03 mi (8:53 / mi) +118m 8:23 / mi
weight:159lbs

Felt loose from skiing at lunch, so went for a run after work. Decided if I'm going to bother running, I might as well run as fast as I can. Which at this moment isn't very fast, but much better than just going out and jogging up and down. Pressed the downhill segment, and fought it out coming back home. Quite happy with this time so early in the spring.

Skate Ski (Trapps) 3:10:04 [3] 31.1 km (6:07 / km) +878m 5:21 / km

New heavy snow. Well groomed, but not yet set. So slow in the morning and better later on after hoards of snowshoers packed it down three abreast.

Over the top past the cabin and a screamer coming down the Haul road. Then back up Oslo and around Hare for a good tour. Ended with a lap around the FIS race trail. Fine except for guys on snowmobiles pulling tanks of maple sap to the sugar house.

Skate Ski (Kingdom Valley Trails) 1:25:50 [2] 10.5 km (8:10 / km) +73m 7:54 / km

Wet snow all day. Maybe 4" heavy cover. Groomed and covered up all the junk on top of the trails, filled in some thin spots.

Started out picking up the sap jugs. Everything was maxed out; collected 13 gal. Boiled down over the weekend and finished off a gal of syrup. Very high sugar content. Had expected to end up with half that, but boiling point kept going up, even with plenty of liquid left. Finally stopped it at 221F. Was probably done at 218F (7F over water boiling point). But fine result. Half pint is already missing.

So skiing, too. Kind of slow, but not slushy. Just really high moisture content and sticky. Temp at freezing, would be no fun to wax for classic in these conditions. I stopped to pick up some sticks and had snow stuck to the ski bottoms. And that's with flouro glide wax on the skis. Not your usual kick wax.
