Strength 15:00 [3]
(rest day)

Sore and tired legs = rest day. Easy 'championHIPS' yoga followed by 5 minutes easy on bike. Fun weekend of O has me super excited about racing in Scotland this summer! Then some fun at WT in August (Unconquerable Badness is now officially signed up) and then I need to pick an autumn O race after Nationals to do. Suggestions?

Note

46 years....and counting. Blahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Running 15:00 [3]

Warm-up and cool down
9 AM

Orienteering 1:30:00 [3] *** 10.87 km (8:17 / km) +368m 7:05 / km
spiked:16/18c

Today was a tough 'shut up legs' kinda race.

Terrain was rocky, thick in places and hilly. I couldn't get the legs to get going on long climb to #1. Felt slow but spiked the control. Next control was right back down the hill but through a recently logged area and lots of rock. Knees complained on that. Then a slow execution to #3. Looked at my watch and realized this was going to be a 10min/km kinda race because it was #rugged and the legs weren't firing on any cylinders (looking at splits I was already 2.5 min down only 16 minutes into the race). Decided to take a long trail running route to #4 to plan ahead and get the legs going. I think it worked as I started to get some flow (either that or it was because controls were closer together for a bit). Long leg to #9 I chose a great route again and flew down this hill in some very nice woods. BUT wIth the technical and hilly bit of the course over I let my guard down and missed #9. (looking at splits I was within 13 seconds of the lead there despite losing close to a minute on the control). Was pissed off and so I pushed hard to #10 then saw a porcupine and mind wandered to the 'Blaze incident' and chuckled a bit but lost concentration. Missed the control in a bland area and couldn't relocate. Panic set it in as I had to run back 300-400m to relocate and try again (ended up 30th of 32 on the leg and dropped 5.5 minutes to the winner on that leg and was just over 6 back at finish). That deflated me so I just went through the motions after that until 2 controls from the end and I saw Louise Oram (salal). We had started at the exact same time on the two different red courses (same length) and we had a bet who would finish first. So I picked up the pace and passed her with 5m before the last control. BUT I fumbled punching and she beat me in by about a second. :-)

Enjoyed the weekend a lot. Especially because I feel I can finally 'race hard' again. Need to work on my woods speed though. Thanks EMPO for a great weekend of O.

Running 20:00 [3]

Warm-up and cool down
11 AM

Orienteering 40:00 [3] *** 5.04 km (7:56 / km) +120m 7:06 / km
spiked:12/19c

fun course like middle should be but I made too many errors. 2 minutes worth on 7 non-spiked controls and too much hesitation as I had trouble reading the map on the run. started to get flow after big error on #6 to finish. But still two sloppy rough compass bits at 13 and 15.

this course was much much more interesting than the classic champs course a few years ago.

18 seconds too slow for club bragging rights. knees sore afterwards but last time I raced here I was on crutches afterwards so I'll take it.

great to see BigE with a good run but he knows he can be even faster and he will be. will be fun to race with him and Sudden on Canadian WOC relay team. ;-)

Running 15:00 [3]

Warmup and cool down with AG!
3 PM

Orienteering 15:00 [3] *** 2.67 km (5:37 / km) +71m 4:58 / km
spiked:14/16c

US Sprint Champs. While a fair bit on the easy side I enjoyed the terrain and course. Poor route to #4 then ran to#6 before 5. a little slow on the uphills but knee felt good. enjoyed running 'fast' again. Wil got me by about 25 seconds and Joe by about 10 seconds. Looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

ARX training at Iroquoia Heights. "Video game" Nav. After the juniors got a group of 4 CP's and returned to the start they would 'unlock' another four and move to the next level which was harder and farther away. Almost all completed all three levels. Fun evening and I was especially pleased how few kids put up their hands when I asked who played computer or video games.
