Orienteering race (O-Ringen day 5) 1:07:00 [4] ***** 4.2 km (15:57 / km)
spiked:8/8c shoes: vj's

Chasing start day. Just missed out on the chase. Very hot, very tired, very physical & coming down with a cold. Felt awful & only managed to pull 9 seconds out of Holly on the 3+ minute run in!
What a fab area to end off a great week.
Woo! 5 consecutive days, hot, hot, hot, not thought about stomach & no dizzy problems - great! Cath's coming back (again!).

Orienteering race (O-Ringen day 4) 1:02:00 [3] ***** 3.3 km (18:47 / km)
spiked:8/10c

Grrrrr! Determined to get the full experience & take the chairlift to the top of the mountain, but queueing was hot, hot, hot & very crowded. The view was worth it. Headed down to my start, only to realise it wasn'y my start, 7 had to sprint back up the mountain. Got to my start very flustered with 30 seconds to spare and desperate for a wee!!
Ballsed on 1 & 2 - passed just above the control within the circle both times, but took a while to relocate. After that lost enthusiasm & like my ankles too much to risk them in the rocks.
Probably cost me a chasing start place I had given myself a chance of on days 2 & 3, just hope the terrain is more inspiring than it was on day 5 2002.

Orienteering warm up/down (Shadowing) 29:00 [3]

Back up the chairlift with Hols (cooler up the mountain) & a downhill run with some steep bits, knee-deep boggy bits & some trolls in to the finish.

Orienteering race (O-Ringen day 3) 37:00 [5] ***** 3.5 km (10:34 / km)
spiked:8/8c

Good run.
V hot & late start after loooong walk to the start.
Disappointed to have only one technical control but pleased I nailed it after simplifying well.
The only 2 ways to have got a better result today would have been:
1) be fitter (& nowI'm in a fit state to work on that, yey!)
2) not pansy around at the river crossings!!!
Was gobsmacked to see Stodge @ no 7, & was determined not to let him past. Thought I'd done it 'til he shouted me 25m from the finish line & tho' I found a bit more speed when I was already about to expire I think he may have just punched ahead of me :0(

Orienteering warm up/down (Shadowing) 33:00 [2]

With Holly around her Inskolning course. Orange/light green rather than white standard, but exciting in places, too. Hotting up & not what I needed before a 3.5km walk to the start!

Orienteering race (O-Ringen day 2) 48:00 [3] ***** 3.3 km (14:33 / km)
spiked:12/13c

Smiling before I started - 13 controls in 3.3km = happy shopper!
Much happier & more confident - the contours made sense, bearings were more accurate & I was alot less distracted. It was also far more runnable.
Wobble on no 10, but caught at stream & realised I was too low from the semi-open below.
Even took a good whack off yesterdays run-in time.
A good day in the office.

Event: Oringen 2008

Orienteering race (O-Ringen day 1) 1:32:00 [3] ***** 4.4 km (20:55 / km)
spiked:1/8c

8.00 start time *!?*, first into the forest *!?*, *!?* again. I don't do before 8am, never mind starting at 8am after a 3km walk to the start after a 25 minute bus ride. Alarm at 5.40am. Last time I was up at that time voluntarily was....never!
1st control - steady on a bearing, not good visibility, but found it hiding well behind a bush in the pit.
2nd control - going well, but then it stops making sense. Try relocating at a control on a boulder next to a midge-infested marsh where the buggers are biting. To confirm I'm right, over hill, steep down, big boulder, stream, OK, sorted, over marsh, onto spur, all the way down to to the end *!?* not there, so back up, 7 there it is.
3rd - bearing, green, hill with knoll, ooh - boulders off to right, no; people over there, no; people coming from over there, pretty much on origingal bearing. Muppet!
No 4 - bearing. Will hit open/track/stream at some point. Hit open, Christ it's manky! Battle through & bounce back off road into control.
No 5 - veg boundary corner, off on a bearing wary not to lose too much height so don't lose enough & bounced back off stream.
No 6 - contoured around but struggled with close contact near the circle & more "happened across it" rather than hitting it.
No 7 - got to attack point & ended up relocating off the ditch below. Not concentrating on simple stuff & losing confidence in myself.
Summary: V physical until half way to 8, ran v little. Can't remember ever being so little in contact & struggling with so many controls!
Need to:
1) Trust (and follow) bearings
2) Be less distracted by others
3) Have a definate plan
4) Be more confident
5) More definate just outside circle

Orienteering warm up/down (Shadowing) 19:00 [2] 1.6 km (11:52 / km)

Shadowed/ran with Holly around her Inskolning course. Not very inspiring planning, but liked the happy/sad faces. She can't half shift when she wants to!
