Orienteering 22:45 intensity: (9:24 @1) + (13:15 @2) + (6 @3) 1.22 mi (18:39 / mi) +65m 16:00 / mi
ahr:132 max:159

Setting out controls in blueberry land, also a few other places. Do have to own up to accidentally breaking a control stand by pushing it in by the SI unit. Even if uncomfy the top of the metal rod is the right option...

Running 3:31 intensity: (1:01 @1) + (2:21 @2) + (9 @3) 0.48 mi (7:16 / mi)
ahr:139 max:156

Orienteering 12:10 intensity: (7:41 @1) + (4:26 @2) + (3 @3) 0.71 mi (17:08 / mi) +57m 13:43 / mi
ahr:122 max:155

Setting out some nice friendly nearby controls, goes quickly!

Running 2:15 intensity: (1:35 @1) + (40 @2) 0.28 mi (8:01 / mi)
ahr:123 max:139

Orienteering 7:10 intensity: (1:36 @1) + (3:52 @2) + (1:21 @3) + (21 @4) 0.71 mi (10:05 / mi) +23m 9:10 / mi
ahr:141 max:167

Setting one last lonely control out the east!

Cycling 12:13 intensity: (1:33 @1) + (9:59 @2) + (41 @3) 1.36 mi (8:59 / mi) +46m 8:08 / mi
ahr:128 max:158

Water delivery to some far away controls... and ran into Dartmouth friends Courtney and Tom, who I haven't seen in ages, including since they had 2 kids who were also present. Their names: Kepler and Peak. Kinda awesome =). I mean, if you like astronomy and mountain climbing... Totally people I should have tried getting more into orienteering though, but now they're moving to colorado- boulder area, anyone want to adopt them?
11 AM

Orienteering race 44:09 intensity: (19 @1) + (3:06 @2) + (9:13 @3) + (25:23 @4) + (6:08 @5) 3.43 mi (12:52 / mi) +186m 11:01 / mi
ahr:169 max:181 13c

And the Green course, because I wimped out on Red and just kinda felt like a nice more medium-distanced challenge, which it was. Although, occasionally, especially early on, less of a challenge, as I'd set the controls...

Comparing with Brendan afterwards, some not-great route choices. Out to the road was better to 4, by ~30s and so was road route to 7, which is kind of not indicated fully that it should be on the map. Some unmapped greenbriar nastiness (my way) and a nice trail leading nearly to the control (Brendan's way). I also existed 11 quite poorly, and did not make perfect sense (perhaps because of an extra trail) of the immediate approach to 12, ran past it, I think... QR should tell exactly, but that's for tomorrow...

Cycling 14:45 intensity: (1:38 @1) + (13:07 @2) 1.68 mi (8:46 / mi) +69m 7:47 / mi

Orienteering 15:43 intensity: (4:23 @1) + (8:39 @2) + (2:41 @3) 1.41 mi (11:09 / mi) +57m 9:54 / mi
ahr:136 max:160

Collecting controls on in. Way more hands on pick-up, went quickly, yeah team!

And that's a wrap for team-fundraising meet, thanks to NEOC for letting us do it, and Alex for being awesome doing almost all the work for it, planning courses + organizing. Meg was also great, added control-setting out hands at 8am = so crucial!! Hope everyone enjoyed, thanks for coming!

Running 10:27 intensity: (11 @0) + (1:36 @1) + (7:25 @2) + (1:15 @3) 1.2 mi (8:43 / mi) +1m 8:41 / mi
ahr:141 max:157

Warm up with Alex + Ian, being stressed about all the soccer moms and dads camping out in their foldy chairs in lane 1 (game in the middle)... the first group we asked moved, the second was a bit annoying, didn't want to move back 2 ft, but did explain they'd be gone in 10 minutes, ok, sure then...

Drills 5:22 intensity: (3:27 @2) + (1:55 @3) 0.39 mi (13:45 / mi)
ahr:148 max:164

Drills, bounce bounce.

Running 2:46 intensity: (33 @1) + (11 @2) + (25 @3) + (1:37 @4) 0.35 mi (7:55 / mi) +1m 7:50 / mi
ahr:153 max:174

Yeah! Next game was younger girls playing on a smaller field, so naturally no parent invasion of lane 1, nice!

Running race 10:01 intensity: (20 @0) + (17 @1) + (7 @2) + (8 @3) + (1:01 @4) + (8:08 @5) 3.0 km (3:20 / km) +1m 3:20 / km
ahr:180 max:188

Wahoo! PR shattered, previously was 10.18, I was hoping for under 10.15, this was a really nice surprise!!

Laps were pretty even:
79
80
80
81
83
81
last 600 - 1:58

So was just starting to fade before it looks like the carrot of the finish was able to speed me back up =). Was nice to have Ian there for the first 1k with me, he also joined in for the last one, but a bit far ahead and I didn't catch him...

Really happy, but obviously, next one should be shooting for under 10!

Running 10:13 intensity: (40 @1) + (9:05 @2) + (28 @3) 1.05 mi (9:44 / mi) +8m 9:30 / mi
ahr:144 max:157

Seeking-shade warmdown with Alex and Ian, before heading over to Brendan's for scrumptious brunch. Mmmm. Many berries, famous waffles, and strawberry shortcake.

Note

Soo, finally got to sports doc to try to figure out what is wrong with my right ankle. It has really sharp pain when it everts (turns inwards) in a toe-up position, which frequently happens in orienteering, turns out.

Upon prodding and pulling my ankle around, doc decides unlikely to be the tendon that hangs out on the outer back side of the ankle, where things hurt. More likely to be something in the joint. So down for an X-ray which took forever and ever, but that came back negative for anything obvious (although you can see the bone having formed a spur on the front of my ankle from all that crunching, awesome.) The current hypothesis is cartilage issues between the talus and tibia, so not much to do other than try to strengthen so it doesn't end up in the problem position. If that doesn't work, take an MRI and see what's up more indepth...

So, back to PT. But it's not a bad thing to get ankle strengthening in anyways, so won't be wasted time even if it doesn't solve this prob.
6 PM

Orienteering 1:22:53 intensity: (5:38 @0) + (53:18 @1) + (23:54 @2) + (3 @3) 4.54 mi (18:15 / mi) +220m 15:52 / mi
ahr:110 max:155

Streamering at Nobscot for NEOC meet in 3 weeks. Got there at 6.30ish, scampered around, pretty dusky when I got back to the car. As always, mostly nice, open, delightful woods, some blueberry, some poison ivy. One area with giant big scary dogs close to a property boundary, but not sure there was much of a fence/boundary, moving the control that was near there.... and moving one other one because just not a happily mapped area. No reason to confuse folks.

Fun to be out in the woods! Mosquitos descended any time I stopped though, tis that season now...!

Running 8:54 intensity: (15 @0) + (37 @1) + (7:36 @2) + (26 @3) 0.96 mi (9:16 / mi) +20m 8:42 / mi
ahr:138 max:159

Millions of dogwalkers + dogs! But tis the place for it, suppose. All were well behaved, one was a super-duper cute puppy who ran with me for a bit. Gorgeous, gorgeous morning to be out!

Drills 6:29 intensity: (3:55 @1) + (2:34 @2) 0.38 mi (17:03 / mi)
ahr:131 max:154

Hippity-hop drills in the parking lot.

Running 1:54 [1] 0.16 mi (11:43 / mi) +10m 9:50 / mi
ahr:117 max:144

Orienteering 26:51 intensity: (8:45 @1) + (17:17 @2) + (49 @3) 2.13 mi (12:36 / mi) +60m 11:35 / mi
ahr:133 max:163 17c

Running full through the long course, some stops to number streamers. Think it's pretty ok, perhaps unhappy with one location. And really, there is poison ivy... (If you know you're super-allergic, there are sinks to wash up at Mt. Tom before the mass-start).

1579/2000

Orienteering 16:52 intensity: (3:52 @1) + (12:17 @2) + (43 @3) 1.54 mi (10:57 / mi) +29m 10:21 / mi
ahr:138 max:157 15c

And through the short. Oops, tripped on barbed wire. But I seem to have a real knack for finding it out there. Still, will try to do something so that it's either better ID'ed with streamers or get it out of the direct way of a route...

1594/2000

Running 9:04 intensity: (4:11 @1) + (4:47 @2) + (6 @3) 0.96 mi (9:27 / mi) +24m 8:46 / mi
ahr:127 max:156

Cool down + depositing a streamer.

Strength 14:00 [1]

Day off running, whoa. Decided it would be good for the body, think this weekend might involve a fair bit... and have more vetting-setting type stuff next 2 days.

Normal core, 10 min abs, 2 min back, 2 min side-plank with a little bitt of SJJ action, getting back into them!

Strength 5:30 [1]

12s of hammie exercises

Note

Soo, remote observing went totally well. Some telescope issues now and again, but that'll happen in any run and the telescope operator was always there via chat able to reboot the backends, or weigh in on weird focus/pointing scans.

Except, very last 20 min, everything shut down. Eep! None of my 3 VNC windows were responding at all. Try disconnecting and reconnecting, no go. Try calling them on Skype, no go. Call their land line via Skype and get the telescope operator, who then gives me the heads up that there is a fire somewhere in the observatory! Yikes!! So yeah, my run ended then... Hoping it was a minor fire somewhere in the dormitory and not something getting fried in the telescope itself...

ahr:130 max:163

Drills 4:59 intensity: (12 @0) + (3:42 @1) + (1:05 @2) 0.34 mi (14:48 / mi)
ahr:121 max:136

Running 42:24 intensity: (1:11 @1) + (10:21 @2) + (13:52 @3) + (13:40 @4) + (3:20 @5) 6.06 mi (7:00 / mi) +36m 6:52 / mi
ahr:160 max:181

And early-for-noonies track session with Alejandro, Sergio and Sanjay. Humid!

Did 2 x (6 x 400 on, with 200 jogs), with 400 jog between sets

First set of 6 was all 4 of us, really good feeling to run in a pack like that. I'm super lucky to have these guys to train with! Second set, Sanjay and Sergio moved it up to 800s (they are more marathon training...) while Alejandro and I kept with 400s. Still we just kept running them side-by-side in even 81s,82s. Nice!

Zoning in on sub-10.15 3k on Sat, hopefully!

Running 22:00 [1]

Out the door at something like 6.15 am because I woke up early, but apparently wasn't awake enough to remember my Garmin, whoopsie! Did the same exact warmup as yesterday though, so should be a good estimate.

Orienteering 31:00 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (20:00 @2) + (8:00 @3)
12c

A vague estimate of how long I was out there! Ran another course, in the drizzle, not enough that it was unpleasant. Was having a pretty fun run-around, until I went over on my ankle heading down a hill towards the end, boo!! Left ankle, which tends to be the floppier one. Perhaps at least a bit of time in the brace...

Pretty much spiked everything this time, which is how it should be when you've vetted every single control site!

1562/2000

Running 6:00 [1]

Oh, and in any case, was maybe good I forgot the Garmin, as it's still recovering from last rainy session (i.e. has water in screen...) It seems to be very gradually leaving...
6 PM

Strength 4:00 [1]

Hammies, because I've been neglecting them... just 3 x 10, 10, 10 today, gotta catch up!
