Boo Fahnstock Park! I drove up the 5h from DC, and they closed the park for skiing mid-afternoon because of a wee bit of rain (actually, don't know how hard it rained, I wasn't there yet). Way bummed when I showed up at the entrance and the ranger told me. Ah well. At least it's pretty much on the way home to Poughkeepsie, so just continued on and went for a rollerski as soon as I got there.

Rollerski was fine, double poled first 26 minutes then skating. Elbow doesn't hurt like a few days ago, but I am now just really scared of it hurting and am really aware of it. Will ease into the dp stuff, I guess...

Note

Up early and drove to friend's wedding in DC, got there just in time (10 min before they walked down the aisle)! Wedding was very religious, but also really pretty with an amazing choir and organist, totally suited the couple. Super-glad I went!

Red course at Eagle Rock with Sergei, Boris and Greg in lotsa snow. (Way more than Amherst, jealous!) Cushy to run the downhills in, draggy on the ups, and every once in a while, a really deep drifty bit would catch ya. We ran the course pretty much together, often different micro-routes, twice Boris chose way different, first time was surprisingly equal and second time surprisingly not. Was nice with company otherwise I would have been not confident at controls and gone slower, which would have been way colder.

I really do like orienteering, great to get a bit in during the winter, even if it means I wasn't on skis!

And awesome New Year's after, much fun!

Whoa there, back to running! (Pretty sure Northfield is open, but I just needed to get in some astrophysicing today...) Joined the noon group and was a wicked hard intervals session that they've been working up to for weeks, jeez! Alejandro and Sergio, the Atkins loop with 5 x 5 min @ 5k pace (paces were 6.47, 6.16, 6.25, 5.43, 6.31), which was pretty darn hard (amount of down/up varied). Even into the new L5 for some of them, particularly last few- Alejandro took off on the 4th, I attempted to follow, he was quicker on the downhill, maybe something about turnover, I caught back up when it switched to up.

Happy it felt so good, hamstring didn't tweak out, knee/tibia seems ok afterwards, but achilles got painful immediately afterwards, prob need more calf stretching.

Easy OD skate with Stephi at Ole's in Warren, VT. Unfortunately, cover not as spectacular as its trails are in a series of hilltop meadows- snow was mostly blown off the trails in places. Possibly a new scratch or two for the ski-o skis, but not bad ones. Really need to acquire rock skis actually.

Ski itself was nice OD pace, Stephi and I kept switching leads and did some no-poles to break it up.

However, feel left elbow from yesterday's dp intervals, probably. Will be icing, stretching, and giving it a few days break to avoid it tending towards worse tendonitis.

Skate ski at Sleepy Hollow (near Burlington, VT). Voyaged over there with family in the minivan over App Gap which was wintry gorgeousness! Mountains are awesome.

Only skied at Sleepy Hollow once before (with CSU orienteering folk last winter) so trail system was still relatively new, and was fun to ski around with the map. It had contours on it even! Which were the more interesting part, as trail junctions were pretty few and far between. Although it's also a mtn. bike place in summer, and some of those trails are marked as mapped as 'ungroomed' so fun to pick them off too. Also more enlightening people about ski-o based on q's on the holder again. One guy had obviously gotten a bit lost on the trails, because he was really enthusiastic that he needed one... =)

XC skiing 54:22 intensity: (16:05 @1) + (22:17 @2) + (9:35 @3) + (6:25 @4) 6.59 mi (8:15 / mi) +337m 7:07 / mi

And switch to classic, joining up with Stephi who had spent the previous hour teaching her boyfriend Eric how to skate. I kept the mapholder on and we took off to do classic intervals. 5 x 3 minutes, I did 3 force double pole and 2 actually classicing with Stephi. Was fun to ski with her, I followed her first, on the second she followed me, and I did the traditional 'panic-someone-is-behind-me-ski-fast' pace, so that was a hard one... warm down on an easy trail, chatting and looking at my mapholder. Steph skied behind, and when I focused too much on map, was evident as she started skiing over my tails, a good alarm.

Was lovely to classic ski, first time this season. Such a great motion!

rhr:58 (rest day)

Boo, resting HR went back up. Guess yesterday was a hardish training day, and probably kicking the very end of the cold. Day off, doing some astronomy for the first time in awhile, then heading to northern VT for some skiing with the fam for 1.5 days! Yay for snow!
