WCOC Paugussett Score-O

Really fantastic fun. I was a little wary of the whole Score-O thing, so decided to wear 2 watches so I would definitely have the time. But then I forgot to start either of them at the start! Whoops! Braindead at the beginning, apparently.

Got a few nearby ones, then a circle in control-pick territory, then out to the trail, and just nipped of the trail for all the next batch, until a longer leg to 40, which would have been an obvious one to skip if you weren't going to do all, then the second bit of control pick and then sweeping through the rest on my way in. So that's:
45, 60, 50, 42, 37, 64, 43, 35, 53, 55, 52, 58, 51, 33, 31, 46, 54, 47, 36, 63, 40, 34, 41, 62, 48, 38, 44, 56, 39, 49, 32, 57, 59, 61

The territory of the control picks was really neat stuff, mostly did pretty well, but messed up 51 quite badly. It's right off two trails, but I was coming at it from the south (58), over a pond (because it was totally dry). But there was another thing that looked like it could be a dry pond to it's east, which fooled me, I attacked from it, nothing made sense, came back, found real dry pond.

Other mistake was 44 to 56, which is really silly, because there is a stone wall between the two. I'm not quite sure how I decided to keep running south to hit a *different* stone wall when I had obviously gone way too far. But I eventually hit the next stone wall south, followed it and was bewildered when my control wasn't at the intersection, but figured it out.

Cool to see CJ who is visiting Becky for a bit in New Haven afterwards!

And QuickRoute . Feel like I know a little better what I actually did around 51 at least.

Training at Norwottock. First 6 controls of the course Ross set for training last spring. I'd been to all of them before, but months before. Today was definitely the smoothest I've ever orienteered there, but still found it tough. I think one of the toughest things is how low visibility it is- you get very little information to go on, a lot of the time.

1- right on line, but had to slow way down from last stream to circle, because I found things confusing
2- fine, maintained good contact
3- fine
4- fine
5- fine
6- somehow, I thought these two contour lines with a swamp in the middle of them was a hill? so that entirely wasn't adding up and I went very slowly, but was trusting my compass not to lie and did actually go straight to the control... lesson- contour U's with marshes are probably reentrants, not spurs....

Run back to car- a couple extra minutes up Mt. Norwottock, for good measure.

To Northampton and back with Dan. Lovely day, hung out in Noho for awhile, ate some fro-yo and returned. We much appreciated the shadiness of the bike path, hot one out!

XC skiing 52:47 [2] 7.77 mi (6:48 / mi)

Since my hamstring really hurt just standing around last night, I decided to just double pole workout today, so out to the bike path after work, to its beginning and back. Almost all double pole, except my hands were blistering up so did 10 min without poles on the way back.

Walked up Amity Hill because it was trafficky, got to explain rollerkskiing to a few folks.

Note

Still major issues connecting Garmin to computer. Various combinations of things mostly fail, but work once in a while. Even the Garmin Training Center usually can't download on the first try. Will try re-installing software as a first shot, I guess.

ahr:142 max:168

Morning run, before going to pick up Dan from the airport. Left hamstring still twingy when I started, seemed fine after warming up though. Did my little Emily Dickinson trail loop, probably < 2 mi on actual trail, but still nice! Tried to pick it up a bit on the rail trail on the way home, which felt pretty good.

XC skiing hills 1:00:05 intensity: (7:58 @2) + (5:42 @3) + (21:09 @4) + (25:16 @5) 7.17 mi (8:23 / mi) +551m 6:46 / mi
ahr:154 max:183

Wowzer, that was a good workout! Up to Sunderland to go up Sugarloaf, Alex and I warmed up a bit on River Rd., I tried skating in my classic boot on my right foot, but it was just to hard to keep control of the ski, felt like I couldn't be very powerful. So switched it, and then, hill repeats.

But this is a *very* big hill. It's certainly my longest rollerski hill interval ever. We started right at the bottom, at the pedestrian crossing (second line), then up up up (started way too fast) round a corner, up up and done, at the second sign I saw up there, over the crest. And the amazing and really crucial part of this workout was PG giving us a ride back down. Down this hill on rollerskis is just not possible.

We did 2.5, times were:
9:01, 0.85 mi, 480ft
9:34, 0.87 mi, 474ft
5:42, 0.55 mi, 255ft
Those are Garmin distance and ascent (first two are actually identical, so difference due to it's error, I guess).

First one was hard, because we both started out too fast, was pretty sure Alex was going to catch me at one point, but think we were both dying. Second one was more under control, still really hard up the last pitch, hard enough for technique to start to fail. And the third partial one was still hard, but had the happy ending of being shorter.

I focused on the 2nd and 3rd on keeping my head up. Rollerskiing especially I keep my head looking far too much at the pavement, but it's easier to breathe with head up and helped when I remembered.

And almost most importantly, excellent BBQ with Gail, Peter and Alex after at Bub's. Fantastic!

Strength 25:00 [1]

15 min strength stuff, 10 min abs with Alex, great to have company, strength can be soooo boring! Legs still a bit worked from Saturday, guess that really got me.

Oh, and we finished with a new, and most killer ab exercise- like V-ups, except instead of being a nearly flat line at the bottom side, you are a star. So a cross between star jumps and V-ups kinda, so star-ups!
