Running 19:36 [1] 1.55 mi (12:39 / mi) +35m 11:49 / mi

Super-slow jog just kinda testing making sure not to make worse after 2 days ago aggravation. Was ok, but felt like I shouldn't run more after ~1.5 mi so came in.

Crosstrainer intervals 20:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (14:00 @3) 0.25 mi (1:20:04 / mi) +1m 1:18:59 / mi

So intervals on the elliptical. 2, 3, 4, 3, 2 minutes with 1 min rest.

Cycling 2:13:44 [1] 33.67 mi (3:58 / mi) +225m 3:53 / mi

Bike ride. Since I aggravated injury with yesterday's 4.88mi @ 8:40 pace run, at least a day off running. I was going to go do a tempo on the exercise bike in the gym, but on my way there bio prof friend Suzy said she was riding at 4pm with a few others, so joined them instead! Much nicer to be outside and good to get a longer workout in.

Running 43:21 [2] 4.88 mi (8:53 / mi) +45m 8:38 / mi

Run with Todd! Lovely day, did lots of catching up. Just so nice to have company!

Felt fine during the run, but injury was a bit niggly afterwards, so I guess this was pushing it. I guess was faster and further than I've gone yet...

Strength 40:00 [1]

Pilates

Note

Sooo, need a plan. There are 11 weeks to WOC, I'm definitely not in good shape. But it hasn't made sense to make a plan until now, because I really had to just pay attn to what injury was up to.

I think I still need to gradually add mileage/speed. Will try to do one or the other, and keep up PT exercises. Still won't try to plan the whole week, but let's try the next few days:

Tues: 4 mi run, attempt at ~9 min/mi pace or slightly under, 10 min PT
Wed: 4.5 mi run, as slow as needed to complete; Pilates
Thurs: 4.5 mi run, including 4-8 attempts of 1 min at < 8 min/mi pace, 10 min PT
11 AM

Running 37:59 [1] 4.13 mi (9:12 / mi) +28m 9:01 / mi

Jog, pretty much as intended.

3 mi around canyon and campus. Yeah! Over 3 mi. No real pain, which is pretty great. Slow still.

Finished grading exams. Now for compiling + submitting grades before 9am tomorrow.

Strength 6:40 [1] 0.09 mi (1:14:00 / mi)

And PT/stretching.

Stroller jog/run 18:17 [1] 1.74 mi (10:31 / mi)

Graduation! Great to see the seniors graduate. Know some who had struggles to get there this year and it's particularly great to see them graduate. Neat to meet the families at the end too.

But holy moly exam grading.

Returned home, threw together enchilada casserole then took S out for a stroller jog spin while it was baking.

Running 26:55 [1] 2.49 mi (10:49 / mi) +61m 10:03 / mi

Went into work, did some grading while T+S at sci museum, came back and snuck out for a run while S asleep for nap.

Gardened a bit upon return. Trying to make the yard presentable.

Running 23:14 [1] 2.01 mi (11:33 / mi) +39m 10:54 / mi

Pre-conference early-morning run in Bellingham. No pain.

Friday May 17, 2019 #

4 PM

Running 30:52 [1] 2.49 mi (12:24 / mi) +56m 11:35 / mi

Conferenced, gave my talk and then skeddadled back to AirBnB to go for a joggeroo!

Got about 1.5 mi in, felt like injury was tightening up, so did some squats (usually loosens it), but then my knee hurt, so walked most of the way back from there. =( Gotta get everything else in the body back used to running too...

Thursday May 16, 2019 #

8 AM

Running 19:55 [1] 1.67 mi (11:55 / mi) +46m 10:59 / mi

Woo!! Jog from home before driving up to Bellingham for a conference. The important thing: nothing I would call `pain' during the whole jog. And didn't have any stopping to walk breaks either!

Very exciting. Also have a cold, which maybe will help me from overdoing it. But think I got this. Will just keep easing back into the running, probably doing the hard workouts still on an elliptical/bike for the next 2 weeks or so? But woo!

Wednesday May 15, 2019 #

Note

Physics 102 exam from 6-9pm. Sylvia was not pleased when I had to go at 5:30pm. Feel like she will be less pleased when I'm not around the next 2 days because of a conference...
11 AM

Running 18:12 [1] 1.49 mi (12:13 / mi) +21m 11:42 / mi

5 min jog, 30s off, around the canyon and a bit longer option at the end

Feeling ever so slightly better each day. Wish it would just instantly let me run now that I can kinda run, but guess it's still going to be a long process, ramping up to normal...

Crosstrainer 8:00 [2] 0.11 mi (1:12:44 / mi)

8 min on the elliptical before Pilates

Strength 40:00 [1]

And back to trying Pilates! Everything actually felt totally fine, woo! Did skip the inversions though, suppose I wasn't confident enough those would be ok.

Tuesday May 14, 2019 #

11 AM

Running 18:42 [1] 1.39 mi (13:27 / mi) +23m 12:47 / mi

4 min jog, 1 min walk around the canyon. Think feels a little better, but only incremental progress...

Crosstrainer intervals 31:57 intensity: (11:57 @1) + (20:00 @3) 0.33 mi (1:36:50 / mi) +2m 1:34:57 / mi

Elliptical intervals:

1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1 min with half rest. Is hard to push the same way as actually running. But gotta try, is at least another two weeks of my hard work not being able to be running, I'd estimate.

Running 20:01 [1] 1.4 mi (14:18 / mi) +33m 13:20 / mi

3 min running, 1 min walking around the canyon. Feels better than my attempts at the end of last week, but still not pain-free even at easy jog pace. Gotta be getting there...

Strength 10:15 [1] 0.09 mi (1:53:46 / mi)

PT, strength, stretching

Crosstrainer 20:00 [2]

Kept effort pretty high. But bored. Must bring maps to study!!

Orienteering 55:27 [1] 3.38 mi (16:24 / mi) +85m 15:13 / mi

Zygoat at Teanaway Forks

First summer camping trip! Sylvia is a much different being that she was last summer camping. She was pretty cranky at 7:30pm, so we tried to go to bed. *That* didn't work. Probably because it was still ridiculously light out. We had a toddler scream-crying at 9pm that she wanted "outside, outside!". Which all told, is a great problem to have...

Eventually got all of us to sleep, Sylvia's first time in a real sleeping bag, not a sleep sack. She stayed in it at least!

Oh, and then the racing part. Did ok, but am mad I missed one reentrant that I shouldn't have. Approach was ok, but must have been just down hill and didn't see control behind some green. Should have had more faith I was in the right reentrant. Think I did the right skip (#10).

Hiking 1:14 [1] 0.07 mi (17:34 / mi) +12m 11:34 / mi

Up to the start.

Orienteering 1:24:24 [1] 3.93 mi (21:28 / mi) +206m 18:28 / mi

Short Advanced @ Lick Creek

Woo! First completed o-course since injury! Did it walk/jogging with a pole in my left hand. Pain never unmanageable and didn't get noticeably worse during the course or anything.

Nav was pretty spikey, which is good given the speed I was going. Map is rough in places, but adds to the challenge. (Trust contours!)

Friday May 10, 2019 #

7 AM

Running 16:42 [1] 1.15 mi (14:31 / mi)

1 min walk, 1.5 min run, alternating. Dull pain while running, but didn't get worse during the run. And I didn't feel worse after yesterday's attempt either, so that's good!

Nice to be outside and also feels good to be done with all the thesis-reading!

Crosstrainer 14:59 [1] 0.14 mi (1:47:10 / mi)

Followed by some elliptical. Bored of the machines. But I have to remember I am making progress. A week ago I was only swimming and biking.

7 AM

Running 10:47 [1] 0.66 mi (16:20 / mi) +14m 15:21 / mi

1 min walk, 1 min very easy jog (!), alternating

Both exciting and frustrating. Excited to be able to jog at all. Frustrating that there is (minor) pain associated with it and this is where I am 14 weeks before WOC. Was a beautiful day and happy to get outside to workout at least a bit.

Cycling 25:01 [2] 8.0 mi (3:08 / mi) +5m 3:07 / mi

5 x 2 min intervals

Reading some of my student's thesis on habitability zones within the galaxy (due to our central black hole probably having been active in the past and frying atmospheres within some certain distance of it).

Crosstrainer 30:32 [1] 0.34 mi (1:29:50 / mi)

Cycling 15:00 [1]

7 AM

Crosstrainer 15:08 [1] 0.26 mi (58:16 / mi) +8m 53:00 / mi

More very easy elliptical, this time reading a math thesis on the Type A Cluster Algebra. Some neat things in it and well-written, I could actually mostly read it.

Cycling 38:51 intensity: (18:51 @1) + (20:00 @3) 12.0 mi (3:14 / mi) +2m 3:14 / mi

2 x 10 min tempo while reading a CS thesis on curriculum learning for the one-word-out puzzle in natural word processing using word2vec.

Crosstrainer 5:40 [1] 0.07 mi (1:20:42 / mi)

Very easy elliptical, was ok!!

Sunday May 5, 2019 #

11 AM

Orienteering 1:02:31 [3] 2.4 mi (26:03 / mi) +29m 25:06 / mi

Woo! Got out into the woods! With a hiking pole in my left hand and just walking. Felt ok. Perhaps injury getting tired at the end, but not really noticeably. Beautiful day out and enjoyed it. Spiked everything, which isn't surprising given the speed I was going.

Friday May 3, 2019 #

Swimming 31:00 [2]

300 warm up, 100 kick, 50 breast
6 x 50
8 x 100, alternating hard and easy
50 kick, 50 breast

And my students actually finished their theses!! Wooo!!

Bike intervals

1, 2, 3, 3, 1, 1, 2, 3, 2, 1 hard with half rest. 1 min @ L13, 2 + 3 min at L12 on bike.

Feels good to at least be breathing hard.

Day 2 of no crutches. A little sore, but not badly. Just on 1 ibuprofen every 6h or so.

PT

(11 x resist-the-twist) x 3 before S woke up
(8 x elevated tied-knee squats) x 3 while copying 73 Physics quizzes at the chem copier
ankle dorsiflexion stretch, also @ chem copier

Felt a little silly doing my PT while copying the quizzes, but think was only spotted by the chem admin assistant...
12 PM

Swimming 35:41 [2] 0.37 mi (1:36:31 / mi)

300 warm up, 100 kick, 50 breaststroke

2 x (4 x 50, 2 x 100, 1 x 200), kick and breastroke laps in between + to cooldown

Good workout! Feel like a strong swimmer now. But do hope I can give it up sometime soon!

First day without crutches at all at work.
