Stroller jog/run 42:21 [1] 4.4 mi (9:38 / mi) +72m 9:10 / mi

Last pre-WOC stroller jog! Was up at 4:30am and Sylvia woke up ~6am so we hung out for an hour before daycare. Going to miss her sooooo much during WOC!

Read UW campus map on the way there, Seattle Pacific on the way back. Two people commented about the empty stroller on the way back. I mean, how else are you supposed to run your baby to daycare?

Running 20:40 [1] 1.75 mi (11:49 / mi) +26m 11:17 / mi

Reading WMOC M35 sprint qual map while jogging around the canyon.

Running 15:40 [1] 1.43 mi (10:57 / mi) +3m 10:53 / mi

Bah, forgot to set my 5am alarm, so woke up late at 5:30am (trying to get closer, timewise, to Latvia).

Could feel the legs were used yesterday on my warmup. Good.

Drills 6:34 [2] 0.54 mi (12:14 / mi)

Orienteering 13:33 [3] 1.61 mi (8:25 / mi) +30m 7:57 / mi

2k Halprin Open Space Sequence sprint training

Didn't push as hard as yesterday, but tried to have good flow, reading ahead well, including control descriptions. Course again could have been trickier, but was good to have more training around buildings. Is a neat little map!

Lost good flow twice: didn't have my choice to 8 figured out when I punched 7 (should have immediately turned around). And also the trickiest control of the set, 19, I wasn't prepared for when I left 18 - perhaps lulled into a sense of things being easy from previous controls.

Running 14:03 [1] 1.59 mi (8:51 / mi) +10m 8:41 / mi

Running warm up/down 10:39 [1] 1.09 mi (9:46 / mi) +14m 9:23 / mi

Drills 8:06 [1] 0.49 mi (16:24 / mi) +3m 16:06 / mi

Running 1:35 [1] 0.16 mi (9:57 / mi)

Orienteering 9:16 [4] 1.2 mi (7:43 / mi) +19m 7:22 / mi

Clark College

Never been to a local sprint map, so thought it'd be worth a training! Goal was full speed. Got close to that, which is good, but the courses (both this and the next) weren't set particularly trickily - there could have been much more in-and-out of the alleys of buildings and such and would have been better training.

No mistakes, one control I couldn't get at b/c construction.

Running 5:37 [1] 0.51 mi (11:07 / mi) +18m 10:01 / mi

Orienteering 15:53 [4] 2.12 mi (7:29 / mi) +30m 7:10 / mi

Stroller jog/run 38:32 [2] 2.53 mi (15:14 / mi) +63m 14:08 / mi

Another map-study daycare stroller run!

5 PM

Stroller jog/run 40:32 [1] 4.19 mi (9:40 / mi) +92m 9:03 / mi

Daycare pickup - on the way there read/choose routes for a map of De Veste (Netherlands) and on the way back Kristianborg (Trondheim WOC sprint). Definitely harder to be reading map/picking routes with only 1 hand to steady map available, plus needing to steer stroller.

Good eye-map coordination training even if not at full speed.

Running 5:03 [1] 0.48 mi (10:32 / mi)

Reading JWOC final map while running. Very tricky stuff in some parts!

Orienteering 20:40 [2] 2.43 mi (8:30 / mi)

Orienteering a course I made around Reed a few years ago. Should have tried to push even harder! Did like the course at least. =)

Running 4:31 [1] 0.45 mi (10:02 / mi)

Again, reading JWOC map/

Running 18:12 [1] 1.89 mi (9:37 / mi) +74m 8:34 / mi

Drills 6:27 [2] 0.38 mi (17:09 / mi) +17m 15:03 / mi

Running 37:22 [1] 3.94 mi (9:29 / mi) +27m 9:17 / mi

Boo! Ran all the way over to local HS track and turns out it's closed until Sept. because infield is getting re-turfed.

Had planned 8 x 400m, so modified to 10 x 1 min. Aimed for flat because that's what it looks like Riga sprints will be. Felt pretty good. But really was curious to see what 400m times would be. But maybe I'd get psyched out if they were slower than I wanted, so perhaps this is all good anyways...

Strength 35:00 [1]

Pretty chill Pilates. Beginning was stretching hands/feet, which is fine but doesn't feel like accomplishes much.

Sunday Jul 22, 2018 #

6 AM

Running 17:56 [1] 1.77 mi (10:09 / mi) +24m 9:44 / mi

Orienteering 19:43 [4] 2.15 mi (9:10 / mi) +40m 8:40 / mi

UW 1 at early o'clock in the morning. Good to have the run over from Eric's to wake up. Went after it, a bit flumoxed by some construction early on, but really I should have put together where it was pushing me better than I did. Feeling a bit smoother reading ahead than yesterday, still definitely need to although more times coudl open up (if there was any oomph left in my legs).

Orienteering 21:32 [3] 2.2 mi (9:47 / mi) +96m 8:37 / mi

UW 2. Definitely getting tired. Focusing on reading CDs well and flowing.

Running 10:18 [1] 1.1 mi (9:19 / mi) +7m 9:09 / mi

10 AM

Orienteering 18:38 [2] 1.95 mi (9:33 / mi) +111m 8:07 / mi

Woodland Park. North Seattle probably would have been more interesting, but wanted some more practice at park, since a good poriton of sprint qual map will be. One flub at the beginning, but would have been completely been avoided if controls were there because I was in the right spot, just a tad confused. Another time got dragged into a reentrant when I needed to be in a depression off-center from the reentrant. That was a bit sloppy.

Running 2:30 [1] 0.22 mi (11:22 / mi) +1m 11:12 / mi

Orienteering 8:01 [3] 0.79 mi (10:09 / mi)

Here begins Ali's Seattle Sprint training camp (6 sprints in < 20h)! Sooo many thanks to Pink Socks and ebone, for enabling!! And for reals, these are world-class sprint maps. Everyone should make it to SART at least once...

Gas Works Park.

Pretty good and perhaps like Riga sprint qual, the park portion at least. Messed up twice at the end, perhaps distracted by picnickers in finding a better route to the first mess-up, but second one really just came out the wrong direction from a control for no good reason. Gotta work on that!

Running 4:12 [1] 0.41 mi (10:22 / mi)

Orienteering 22:34 [3] 2.47 mi (9:08 / mi) +17m 8:57 / mi

Center of the Universe (a.k.a. Fremont).

Wow, awesome. Intricate + some clear multi-level, also minimal traffic. Had to work very hard to read ahead enough to not stop. Read one control as up high, thought I was being so clever with my route, then was down low. Which the map does make clear, blah.

Running 7:19 [1] 0.72 mi (10:07 / mi) +1m 10:04 / mi

Running 1:13 [1] 0.12 mi (9:47 / mi) +2m 9:19 / mi

Orienteering 19:45 [4] 1.77 mi (11:09 / mi) +67m 9:59 / mi

And one final training squeezed into the afternoon (luckily all close). Seattle Pacific U, which is a hilly campus made neater by multilevels divided by (sometimes) uncrossable walls. Also very hard to stay ahead enough to not fully stop out there. Some added speed would happen with controls actually there and spotting them from further away, gaining full confidence. But still would have been tricky!!

Sylvia saw me at the spectator control and then was upset I hadn't stopped to hang with her the whole last lap apparently. Aw.

Running 31:24 [1] 3.3 mi (9:31 / mi)

Running through Canyon, over to Woodstock park, then Creston park. Reading JWOC sprint map.

Orienteering 11:44 [3] 1.36 mi (8:38 / mi) +12m 8:24 / mi

Creston park zero-o training from a few years ago. One control was in too thick green for me to get, and one route was prohibited due to active tree felling. Not tricky, but good to be reading a map at speed.

Running 24:12 [1] 2.31 mi (10:27 / mi) +12m 10:18 / mi

Stroller jog/run tempo 59:29 intensity: (29:29 @1) + (30:00 @3) 7.25 mi (8:12 / mi) +88m 7:54 / mi

Tom had a R meetup lunch, so went back home and ran with Sylvia. 2 x 15 min tempo. Unfortunately the long stretch of nice bike path is closed for construction, so had to tempo through a neighborhood which isn't as awesome.

Sylvia feel asleep at some point and I got to both shower and eat lunch while she kept napping upon return!

Orienteering 36:45 [2] 3.95 mi (9:18 / mi) +8m 9:15 / mi

Woodlawn park sprint start training by Dan G. Lots of kiddos around (free lunch for summer program held at the parks, which is pretty cool) for ample distraction. Did compassless, which made me more aware of things and was good for sprint training. One or two misses.

Stroller jog/run 47:03 [1] 3.32 mi (14:10 / mi) +56m 13:28 / mi

Up and at it at early o'clock while Tom went to the gym to lift. Because it's more fun to run with baby than lift with baby.

Running 6:06 [1] 0.57 mi (10:37 / mi) +39m 8:46 / mi

Orienteering 49:05 [3] 4.02 mi (12:13 / mi) +70m 11:35 / mi

Up at 6:30ish and out the door while Sylvia and Tom stayed in our AirBnB. Headed out to Lava Butte to train the motala as o-tervals. Ok, but my compass work is definitely not spot on. It's not that hard to run straight in these woods (lots of low brush you have to dodge, but nothing un-get-through-able), so I should have been able to do better.

Running 5:34 [1] 0.45 mi (12:22 / mi) +25m 10:33 / mi

Orienteering 19:17 [4] 2.08 mi (9:16 / mi)

Bend mini-training camp! I missed last year's smoky Deschutes Daze since it was the weekend I was due with Sylvia, so figured I could run the courses now for some good training!

This was the red sprint at COCC. Felt pretty good, but it's very different than either the qual or final will be in Riga - very hilly, at altitude, college campus with sparse high-desert woods. But at least good training to push it and be on a sprint map!

Running 2:57 [1] 0.52 mi (5:38 / mi) +251m 2:16 / mi

2 PM

Orienteering 1:00:19 [2] 4.51 mi (13:22 / mi) +188m 11:50 / mi

And Red course at Witch of Many Boulders (Dutchman Flats - lower). Good to be running through the woods - not too thick, but in places lots of fallen logs to skip-hop over. Controls weren't set to trickily, so easy to be sure I was at the right place always.

Stroller jog/run 37:38 [2] 4.38 mi (8:36 / mi) +102m 8:01 / mi

Morning kiddo drop-off at daycare. She didn't totally melt down - turned to a frowny face when I put her down, but then quickly gave her a toy and said `Adios' (Spanish immersion).

It's hot, was nice to get the run in early. But kinda bummed it isn't my day to take her to swim lessons!!

11 AM

Running 53:33 intensity: (32:33 @1) + (21:00 @4) 5.9 mi (9:05 / mi) +135m 8:28 / mi

2-4-1 min intervals x 3.

Scooted out at 11am to do them, because will be a hot one here later, plus have more baby swimming today!

Felt pretty good, they were hard work.

Strength 50:00 [1]

Pilates.

Tuesday Jul 10, 2018 #

Note

Day off training - straight from camping to drop S off at daycare to work to baby swim lessons to home. Phew.

Running 51:04 [1] 4.91 mi (10:24 / mi)

Finally got Sylvia to sleep for afternoon nap in the tent, then headed out for two laps around the perimeter trail of the campground. It's a pretty big campground...

Hiking 1:50:33 [1] 4.41 mi (25:04 / mi)

Perfectly good Sylvia sleeping at camping last night! She woke up sometime late night (others were still awake in the campground, from the sounds of it) then not until 5:30 am.

We had blueberry pancakes, then drove over to a hike up to Stahlman point. Sylvia was asleep in her car seat upon arrival, but was successfully transferred to pack still sleeping and we made it at least halfway up with her still asleep!

Really nice views from the top!

Sunday Jul 8, 2018 #

Hiking 36:18 [1] 1.79 mi (20:17 / mi)

Tom carried Sylvia up to the lower falls, then I took over and we hiked together to the upper falls and back down to the car.

Running 27:46 [2] 2.72 mi (10:13 / mi)

Running uphill @ Shellburg Falls on the way to family camping #3 at Detroit Lake.

Saturday Jul 7, 2018 #

Orienteering 41:25 [3] 3.63 mi (11:25 / mi)

Green @ Lacamas Lake

Was 19s slower to the first control on Round 2. Guess attempt #1 stole some of my oomph...

Running 13:10 [1] 1.43 mi (9:13 / mi)

Finding my way back.

Orienteering 13:48 [3] 1.14 mi (12:06 / mi)

Failed attempt at Green @ Lacamas Lake. Flung myself into the green woods, emerged with only the tiny corner of the map I was holding onto. Given the number of nettles, I opted to try to make my way back without a map instead of searching for it....

Running 5:38 [1] 0.54 mi (10:26 / mi)

Thursday Jul 5, 2018 #

Running 48:07 [2] 4.81 mi (10:00 / mi)

10 x 30s as fast as possible, around Reed

Need some speed...

Wednesday Jul 4, 2018 #

Running 1:03:44 intensity: (23:44 @1) + (40:00 @3)

2 x 20 min tempo @ Powell Butte

Monday Jul 2, 2018 #

Strength 45:00 [1]

Pilates. Got up early from camping and made it back just in time to get all our paperwork together and get to the PO for our apt to get Sylvia a passport. She was a bit sullen, so has a very pouty passport photo for the next 5 years...

And then into work to sort out student projects. But still snuck away at lunch to Pilates. Because I'm pretty bad at getting core work in on my own and really it's still gotta get in!

Stroller jog/run 40:08 [1] 3.53 mi (11:22 / mi)

Stroller jog upon return home from work. This is a busier week because day care has summer break with July 4th. And Tom has job applications to fill out.

Sunday Jul 1, 2018 #

Hiking 2:30:00 [1] 6.25 mi (24:00 / mi)

Hiking at Silver Falls State Park with Tom and Sylvia. Sylvia was in the framed hiking pack and seemed a happy camper until near the end. At which point, I gave her the map, which she proceeded to eat. And then a few hours later, throw up over everything. Parenting whoops.

Lots of waterfalls, and also lots of people! Especially at the beginning. Including lots of babies. Lots of baby-carrying devices, including not rugged strollers on the trails.

Good hike for before 2nd edition of camping with baby, which went better. She didn't initially want to sleep (so was up until 10pm!), but then woke up once in the middle of the night and once at 5am, which was way better than last time. She mostly stayed in her mini-tent within our tent, but we bought an extra sleeping pad and that totally helped. Then I could roll over to her without getting cold + uncomfy. And she'll use it sometime down the road anyways...

Think the mini-tent is our sleeping plan for her both at NAOCs and up at the cottage with my family, so hoping to get her accustomed to it.
