Stroller jog/run 46:23 [2] 5.23 mi (8:52 / mi) +72m 8:30 / mi

Sylvia was set to nap when we headed out, so she fell asleep about 1 mile in and stayed soundly asleep while I changed and got ready for yoga. Beautiful day out - the sun snuck out behind the clouds some!

Strength 20:00 [1]

Mama/Baby yoga. Soo different from last time I went. Everyone else's babies are now tiny. Or maybe Sylvia's just been growing.

But in any case, her newfound scooting backwards skills mean she was hard to keep on her mat. She stayed awake the whole time, but did require a diaper change at one point.

Lots of the moms (and therefore the babies too!) went to the bakery next door right afterwards. Nice to catch up with others!

Strength 45:00 [1]

Pilates. So nice to get to this. Still so weak compared to where I was/would like to be. But ok, will get some core strength back!

Stroller jog/run 1:03:07 [2] 7.07 mi (8:56 / mi) +129m 8:27 / mi

Nice! Fastest and longest stroller jog yet! Felt good and it was gorgeous out- partly sunny, low 50s. Another mom with an older baby, perhaps even toddler in a stroller said 'We're the two hardest working out here on the trail." Quite possibly true, she was going at a good clip too.

And - Sylvia stayed awake for almost the whole run!! This is great because it means Tom and I can get work done when she naps later on during the day.

Ski-O 15:00 [1]

Ski-o at Teacup Lake! Sylvia and I didn't compete (no easy way to wear a baby on your front plus a ski-o holder), but we did set out 4 controls.

XC skiing 45:00 [2]

Then went out and skied the big green loop with Sylvia. Is definitely more work skiing with her. But totally fun. She was asleep from the end of control setting out.

Stroller jog/run 45:08 [2] 4.81 mi (9:23 / mi) +61m 9:02 / mi

Yay! Made it to a lunchrun! Ran with the Bob over to the meet-up spot by the Reed gym and then ran with Ueli, Todd and Sebastian who kindly agreed to do a loop that basically went by our house, so I could peel off there.

Ueli also took the stroller for a few miles including the big uphill back home, so that was nice to get some sans-stroller jogging in.

Stroller jog/run 46:03 [2] 4.79 mi (9:37 / mi) +69m 9:12 / mi

Morning joggeroo with the babe. Out toward Sellwood on the Springwater trail.

And Sylvia started scooting backwards. Eep! That means she doesn't necessarily stay where we put her. But motion is still slow at least...

Strength 45:00 [1]

Big day. 1st day of classes, so first real-real being back to work post baby. And my very first time lecturing in the huge lecture hall to 120 intro physics students. Holy moly.

Reports are that I was loud enough and mostly wrote clearly enough so we'll take that as a win for Day 1. Board organization could have been better, but I had to write much bigger than usual for the big hall, so didn't have the plan quite right going in.

Reward was getting to go to Pilates sans-baby afterwards. There is still a whole lot of strength to get back, but it feels like now it's actually probably productive to do the exercises!

Orienteering 1:10:51 [3] 6.94 mi (10:13 / mi) +195m 9:23 / mi

Wahoo! My first 'race' since I think the first weekend of California Orienteering Week last March. This if a fun annual event CROC puts on (ringleader: John Godino) which is a night-o street scramble, basically. Super fun, one of the hardest things is keeping the clue booklet straight and writing down your answers. Think I won, but only by a minute or two.

Definitely tired by the end. Also my longest run in who knows how long. Wore the SI belt and felt some pelvic pain towards the end, but not much.

Tom took out Sylvia for her first night-o. But, she was not at all the only baby at the meet. I saw another in a carrier and then there was a couple with a stroller who were boldly carrying it up stairs and taking it off-trail. Pretty cool!

Running 27:00 [2] 3.0 mi (9:00 / mi)

Went to Sellwood Park for the final installment of my Orienteering Paideia class. Ueli was super-helpful and both set and took down the streamers, so I just showed up with the three students and they ran their first real orienteering courses (on campus is a bit too easy if you live on it...)!

I snuck in a little run while they were out. Saw one jump over a fence, but it's marked on the map as crossable, so fair game!

Orienteering 33:00 [1] 2.8 mi (11:47 / mi)

Setting and picking up controls around campus for Orienteering Paideia class, day 2. Had 4 people show up today, so one more than yesterday!

Orienteering 14:34 [1] 1.12 mi (13:01 / mi) +29m 12:02 / mi

Setting out controls for Day 1 of my Paideia orienteering course. Remembered to email campus security right before so they wouldn't take them down!
11 AM

Orienteering 30:50 [1] 2.37 mi (13:01 / mi) +43m 12:19 / mi

Picking up controls from Day 1, checking my locations for Day 2.

Running 38:39 [2] 4.21 mi (9:11 / mi) +58m 8:48 / mi

Sylvia was a sleepy-head this morning, so snuck in a sans-baby run before her 4 month pedatrcician's visit. Unfortunately, her pediatrician was out (got a message yesterday that I apparently ignored) so we saw a family practice doc who wasn't as helpful to us figuring out if we should, or should not work on introducing peanuts to her early given my allergy. Bah.

Anyways, as for the run, I tried to pick up the pace a bit since I was baby-free. Felt pretty good, some muscles still getting used to things, but was nice to be breathing a bit harder!

XC skiing 1:29:07 [2] 12.26 mi (7:16 / mi) +341m 6:41 / mi

And more skiing!! Had the Ergo better strapped to me this time, made for better skiing. Although, every once in awhile Sylvia would stick out her arm in way that limited my range of movement, so kept having to tuck her back in. Again, think she slept almost the whole time.

Simply gorgeous out. I've never been in Bend when the air is so clear - can see all the mountains around!!

XC skiing 1:18:59 [2] 10.39 mi (7:36 / mi) +240m 7:06 / mi

Woo! Annual Bend trip with some other Reed faculty. This year: 12 adults, 2 babies, 2 dogs. Pretty full house - Sylvia and I slept in a (big) closet. Was actually nice and cozy. Felt a little bad for the people in the master bedroom whose closet we were occupying - they probably got woken up a few more times overnight than they would have liked.

Anyways, no snow at Meissner nordic (elevation 5,400'), so I went up with Andrew and Sylvia to the nordic center at Mt. Bachelor (6,300'). It's lower trails weren't open, but all of the middle ones were, so perfectly enough skiing for me these days.

Suited Sylvia up, put her in the Ergo and took off! Still have her on the front, probably would be more comfortable on my back, but I want to try that out first walking before skiing.

Stroller jog/run 54:55 [2] 4.93 mi (11:08 / mi) +96m 10:30 / mi

Hah, perfect timing between major rain showers! Pretty warm day, wonder how the snow is holding up at Mt. Hood at these temps...

Milwaukie/bike path loop, ok besides going past a school when school was getting out. Sylvia fell asleep about 8 min in, woke up right towards the end when it was starting to rain and I pulled out her car seat cover.

Note

Got flights for first weekend of COW, so guess we're going!! Hope I'll be in better shape in 9 weeks, but I think the trajectory is actually up now that I can run a bit more.

My main goal is to survive the upcoming spring semester. But I'd really like to simultaneously get back into shape.

Looking at my school-week schedule, Wed is just out of consideration, it's booked from 8am until 8pm (take seminar speaker out to dinner). So that'll be day off. Monday is also pretty busy, but I'll try to do Pilates at lunch. Tues, Thurs, Fri will probably be stroller jogs and hopefully I'll get some fun workout/race in on one of the weekend days and then maybe a run without a stroller on the other...

Stroller jog/run 40:45 [2] 4.08 mi (9:59 / mi) +70m 9:29 / mi

New color for stroller runs! Figure I'll be doing a lot of these this winter/spring as Tom and I have communally very little time, so the multitask of running + babysitting is a win!

Went out the Springwater towards Sellwood - the end of the trail in that direction is almost exactly 2 miles from our house. The steep little trail down to the bike trail is tough going both down + up.

Sylvia slept from about 8 min into the run until almost the end.

Also, nanny started today. Had 4h of baby-free time. It was actually pretty amazing to get to focus on work for that long!

Orienteering 26:04 [2] 1.81 mi (14:24 / mi) +46m 13:21 / mi

Putting out streamers for the training.

Sylvia and Tom helped by putting 7 of the closest streamers up. Also- we got Sylvia's b-day SI card, woo!!
11 AM

Orienteering 21:25 [1] 1.55 mi (13:49 / mi) +34m 12:56 / mi

Picking up streamers. Sylvia didn't seem to want to leave the nice warm car, so I picked them all up.

Orienteering 29:23 [1] 2.09 mi (14:03 / mi) +32m 13:25 / mi

Checking out the training I set at Sellwood park. Happy with all but one control location.

Running 11:01 [1] 1.01 mi (10:55 / mi) +27m 10:04 / mi

And an extra little run around the field.

Running 32:59 [2] 3.37 mi (9:47 / mi) +60m 9:17 / mi

Run in the rain. Soooo much warmer though! Normally I'd be a wimp about 40-odd degrees and rain, but felt nice to be in fewer layers. Focused on short stride.

Thursday Jan 4, 2018 #

Note

Finally had a PT session! An hour that was mostly evaluation. Pubis symphsis joint is the problem, but there isn't detectable separation (good!) although it's still tender. Motions that torque the pelvis are still to be avoided so that the joint continues to heal.

I don't have strengthening exercises to do yet, the story is to avoid doing things that put stress through the joint so it keeps healing.

Running is supposed to be ok, but keep stride short. Skiing is ok, but she was less thrilled by it's motions and definitely wanted me to wear the SI belt while doing so.

She also checked out my abs, she wasn't worried about the minor diastisis recti (one finger width for a short zone) and was happy how I was engaging the transverse abs to do things.

Note

Trip back West. Luckily got out before any bomb-cyclone cancellations! Sylvia did fine on the flights again. At this age, seems like it is easy, she was just psyched to be cuddled the whole 6h flight from Newark back to Portland!

XC skiing 59:38 [1] 6.66 mi (8:57 / mi) +82m 8:37 / mi

Skate ski at John's Glen - dropped off there and skied back to the house with Tom on some ski-o worthy trails! Fun times.

Added a headband to the buff + 2 hat combo and seem to have avoided the frost nip on the ears!

Hiking 13:02 [1] 0.62 mi (21:01 / mi) +36m 17:48 / mi

Well, the ski trail ended a bit before the house, so the final walk home.

Running 41:09 [2] 5.0 mi (8:14 / mi)

Today's high was predicted to be 2 degrees with a windchill of -14 F, so I went back to the gym after a delightful baby-free brunch with Tom to kick off the New Year! We're getting spoiled by all this grandparent babysitting...

Strength 6:00 [1]
