Running 1:06:45 [2] 6.32 mi (10:34 / mi) +143m 9:52 / mi

Last Observatory Mesa loop run. Definitely the snowiest it's been. Snowy trail running takes concentration and lots of balance muscles! Especially when it's part icy like it was today.

Saw fat-tire bike buddy and a lady running with 3 dogs. One seemed terrified of me.

We are packing up a storm. Nearly there...

Skiing up to and a bit beyond the Secret Valley. Fat tire bike man coming up the FUTS at me again as I descended. Snow is pretty icy in places where trees have dripped or that have seen any sun. Nice to be able to ski essentially from our appartment!!

Secret valley + Basha's run. Needed some greens and bananas to complement our attempt to eat everything up out of our apartment in the next few days...

Everyone was out playing in the snow! Amazing! After a bunch of packing + chores, headed up to Mars Hill and skied around. Was nicer in other people's tracks. The one time I broke trail, snow just clumped up under the skis. They need waxing, clearly. Cold is getting better, but throat still feels kinda raw.

XC skiing 45:00 [1]

Wahoo!! We woke up 3 times overnight to the sound of Santa out grooming the trails, but meant we had amazing freshly-groomed trails to ski on for Christmas! Skied back a longer way than the way out with our slightly-lighter packs. Chill pace, felt better cold-wise than yesterday at least, and very nice to not be skiing in a white-out!

XC skiing 35:00 [1]

Merry Yurt-mas Eve! A month ago or so, I booked a yurt at the nordic center for Tom and I to stay in Christmas Eve. For most of the month, there was no snow. But lucky us, northern AZ got an intense Christmas Eve storm. Starting at 11 am or so, it just kept accumulating in the inches-per-hour rate. When we got there at 2pm or so, it was skiable coverage, but a complete white-out. So we donned our packs and our skis and headed out in it! The yurt was only 1.3 miles away, but breaking trail, going uphill, being at 8000 ft and having a cold made it slow going!

We arrived at the yurt and started up the wood stove first thing. It did take awhile to really warm up, but then we were able to cook on it and it basically became a sauna and we had to keep opening the door for temperature modulation. The snow was coming down so fast, that we had to shovel the way to the woodshed every hour or so.

Anyways, super-cozy and wonderful way to spend Christmas Eve into Christmas! Totally recommend if anyone is near Flagstaff anytime. They are also open in summer, feature an outside grill and such.

Major storm yesterday and last night, unfortunately mostly as rain, just a bit overnight must have been snow - woke up to a fluffy inch.

The move begins! Sent some boxes of books toward Portland today.

Little afternoon joggeroo - FUTS was mushy, but not stick-to-your shoes muddy because it's mostly cinder.

Last Run Flagstaff workout of the year.
Intervals
4 min, 2 x 2.5 min, 6 x 1 min

Not nearly as frigid and blustery as last week. Got to try out my new Run Flagstaff top, nice n' cozy!

Afterwards, game night at Vicki's. Played Dixit, which was beautiful + fun!

Saguaro Lake 2h Score-O

Yeah, cleared the course with just a few minutes to spare. Did pick up the pace a bit with 25 min to go, just to make sure.

Fun times running around! Some hesitation into control circle, sometimes excusable due to low map detail, but at least once my own fault (on too low of a saddle). Terrain featured few cholla (yay!), not to many nasty wash crossings and was a little rocky, but not bad at all.

Desert-o is certainly different, but still a fun orienteering challenge! Has been fun to get in some SW orienteering.

We drove back through Payson and Pine and finally by the Discovery Channel Telescope on Lake Mary Road. Much prettier drive than I-17 (although that's also nice because you can see Sedona terrain). Turns out, spotty cell service though.

Coon Bluff Night-O (2 h Score-O)

Got *so* lost after the first control. Needed to find a little hill at the base of a bigger hill, looks like I was heading at it after I left the trail according to the track, then bam! Hooked a left because I saw another hill-like thing. Bah! Took me forever to relocate- I kept moving, but really didn't know where I was until I found the high point of the whole map.

Normally this desert terrain is pretty easy, because you can see forever and thus figure out where you need to go. Not as easy in the dark, especially with a dim headlight and using a bike light in my hand (although way better than not having the bike light at all - and headlight worked for reading the map).

Rest of the course went better after that, but wasn't super feisty. A fast walk or easy job was basically what I could to and keep in contact.

Tom and I dined in the parking lot in our now-well-practiced camping meal of Beans-Rice-TacoSeasoning-Fritos-Cheese. Mmmmm. =) We have camped 9 nights this year, 5 car camping, 4 backpacking. We have one night in a yurt upcoming, but I guess that doesn't count as camping, technically.

Morning Secret Valley loop. Started before sunrise, but enough light with twilight to not need a light. Short days!

Running 57:54 [2] 6.31 mi (9:11 / mi) +140m 8:35 / mi

Morning run around the Observatory Mesa loop. Very empty, mornings are cold now, was 20 when I headed out. One of the pro Run Flagstaff guys was going anti-parallel on the FUTS. Snow still in shady places, but in the cold mornings is better before it gets slippy!

Lowell colloquium today was all about the (big) moons of Uranus: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon. Abundance of water ice, CO2 ice, and red dust particles coming from perhaps lesser moons.

Run Flagstaff track workout in the holy moly cold and windy!

3 x (5 min threshold, 2 x 45s rep pace)
90s recoveries between everything

Tough workout given the cold and howling wind down one straightaway.

But! We got our Run Flagstaff tops for the year. Woo!

XC skiing 1:00:06 [1] 3.92 mi (15:20 / mi) +112m 14:05 / mi

Woo, more skiing! This time with Tom and Vicki, because Vicki had an extra pair of skis I could borrow. (Took a bit of squeezing feet into a size too small boots, but not too bad for an hour's ski.) Beautiful weather, if anything too warm for the ski clothes we were all wearing. Mostly tromping, got a bit of good kick-and-glide in some areas where cars had previously 'groomed' the forest roads.

Tour de Lowell right before Mehmet's colloquium. Really enjoyed. Does not look like large-scale structure dominates galaxy evolution...
