Running 54:11 [1] 6.03 mi (8:59 / mi) +138m 8:23 / mi

Morning joggeroo, but had to push it a bit, because I had a coffee date with Tom at Kickstand set for 7:30. Misestimated the distance, though it was more 5 miles...

Beautiful, quiet morning. Started out at 36 degrees, only one dog-walker and one cyclist on the woods trails. Saw the Run Flagstaff pros out for their morning joggeroo (faster than mine) coming at me on the FUTS.
8 AM

Running 6:34 [1] 0.78 mi (8:25 / mi) +4m 8:17 / mi

After a medium mocha, half a chocolate muffin and catching up with Eric and Owen chez Kickstand, jogged home because COLD and the Reynaud's was trying to settle in... Hot liquids can only delay it, change of clothes and/or shower only cure!

Run Flagstaff track workout

The lights were on this week! Less zombie-apocalypse feeling.

1-2-3-4-3-2-1 at interval pace with half as much recovery. I pushed it, think I pretty much kept on pace. Walked the recoveries (seems wimpy, but hey, intervals are *tough* at 7000 ft!).

Morning recovery joggeroo! Around the Cherry Hill neighborhood, then by Basha's for snack granola bars. Got the Girl Scout cookie ones (Samoas and Mint Thins) versions... I'm betting they are basically candy, but was intrigued. =)

Running 1:22:47 [2]

Gotta absorb all my time in the mountains, so after a waffle breakfast thanks to the new waffle maker, a mocha at Kickstand, and then morning errands, went out to nearby Elden for a mountain trail run. It's just so wonderful to run here!

Saw 3 hikers, 3 mountain bikers for the whole 8-ish mile loop. Wonderful views from both Sunset Ridge and later of the San Francisco Peaks to the north.

Hiking 1:46:24 [1] 4.55 mi (23:23 / mi) +816m 15:01 / mi

Training hike up Kendrick Mountain with Tom. We wore our backpacking packs, used our new hiking poles and carried as much water as we'll be required to on our trip next weekend (2 gallons). Tom also carried a tent and I carried a stove.

The drive out there was 6 miles of rugged forest roads at the end, the biggest problem was trying to see the potholes in the dappled light. Cynthia, my Honda Insight, did well enough, just have to go slower than the Jeeps and such.

The trail was amazingly well-groomed and just at a constant easy grade. Several early people were running it - it would be a lovely run to do.

An old cabin at a saddle along the ridgeline was very cute. It's the old lodging for the fire ranger (there is still a fire tower, but only used during fire season, so closed today) and is apparently on the National Register for Historic places. Much of the mountain burned in 2000, but they saved the cabin by wrapping it in fire-redardant fabric.

We totally cruised on the way down - sub-20 hiking miles are good!

Running 50:15 [1] 5.09 mi (9:52 / mi) +163m 8:59 / mi

Friday morning putter around - tried a loop that involved going past the dormitory for the reservation kids so they can come and go to highschool in town here. It looks fenced off, but there's a public road that goes through, so jogged on that. Up to the Mesa on dirt roads, then forest road and trail back home. Would be a nice loop if the dirt road wasn't actually used by cars, but they kick up so much dust, it's not fun to breathe after they come by. So probably not a new route...

Post work joggeroo on trails, tried a new way home, wasn't too sure where I was at one point, cut across country ended up on the FUTS, woo!

Day 2 of Petrified Forest Rogaine

Same terrain, but very different race than yesterday because other people were around. The majority of the time I was trailing Ian and Andy was behind, especially for the first half. Then Ian went off a complicated way to 81, and I corrected to my planned route. Saw Ian and Andy descending into the badlands as I was heading out.

But then I totally messed up the next control by being 10 deg off on my bearing counter-clockwise and too high. Bah! So back into the trailing Ian pattern for a few more controls.

And then, we choose a different order of controls - I had planned an order that let me have about a 600m road run towards the end and that was better. After that, we met up again and did about 3 controls together, but after that, he had to get one more final one and I was on my way in. So that move put me ahead , but only by 8 min, not the full 9 min I would have needed to pull ahead from yesterday's 2nd place.

So fun to be out there racing though, felt way more competitive and under pressure (in a good way) than yesterday!

Orienteering 1:07:33 [1] 4.5 mi (15:01 / mi) +80m 14:14 / mi

Collecting controls at some speed because had to make it back for awards at 2pm. Happy to have gotten around my full loop before then and not have to head back out. (Bad blister on left heel.)

This was an awesome event. Major thanks to Ron Birks for pretty much doing everything from permissions, to advertisement, to mapping, to the majority of course setting. And then the set of others who set out controls and manned radio stations to make it all happen. So, so neat, really hope it can happen again!!

Day 1 of Petrified Forrest Rogaine

Wow! I'd never ever seen so much petrified wood and then I was running all amongst it. I went clockwise around the course, which took me through a very tree-filled section first. First control was on a petrified tree, actually!

Really neat badlands style terrain. Just a few low-lying cacti. Steep slopes of badlands material can be impassable, good to know!

My two time losses were in tough badlands sections where it's hard to make heads or tails of much, although the second mistake was really just being stuck in a valley I couldn't get out of [too steep walls!]. Should have stayed to the ridge tops.

Came in second to Ian from Alaska, clearing the course!

Looking for Tom who had dropped a radio in the middle of the desert and had to try to find it, hence late. But he found it!!

Cycling 42:38 [1] 8.18 mi (5:13 / mi) +55m 5:06 / mi

Errand ride. Laundry->UPS->laundry->REI->laundry. Cappuccino from Macy's with final laundry stop, because hey, the clothes still had 15 minutes worth of drying...

Running 54:28 intensity: (44:28 @1) + (10:00 @4) 4.76 mi (11:27 / mi) +253m 9:49 / mi

Morning hill workout - 5x up the FUTS Observatory Mesa hill. Was slow/day dreamy for the first few, put it more reasonable times for the last 2! Felt good, came up with an idea for how to describe something going on in a paper: "PDR-maintaining UV radiation".

Strength 5:01 [1] 0.06 mi (1:23:14 / mi)

Core! Have not been doing enough of this!

Observatory Mesa loop with Tom, doing 1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 with half rest. No track workout this eve because parents Crocker are arriving in town!!

Very barky dogs at one point (off-leash). Owner apologized profusely, accepted apology. Glad they only menaced and didn't bite.

Cycling 2:13:27 intensity: (1:33:27 @1) + (40:00 @3) 31.05 mi (4:18 / mi) +895m 3:57 / mi

After a trip to the farmer's market (me - mmm bread) and a trip to the bike store because valve wasn't extending enough beyond rim to pump up (Tom), we headed out for Tom's first and my nth trip up Humphreys to the Snowbowl.

A gorgeous ride, because the aspens are brilliant yellow at the moment, and they are scattered all over Humphreys. Really awesome (although, yes, I miss brilliant New England reds/oranges). Downside - everyone else was also going up and down Snowbowl road to go hike/mountain bike/just take pictures with the aspen. So it was the most traffic-y I'd ever seen it.

I did 4 x 1 mile on my own going a bit faster on the way up. Then sailed down - Tom understandably took his time. This was his first real road ride since his broken-wrist crash last spring.

We stopped at Kickstand on the way home, espresso for Tom, a mocha for me and a split chocolate muffin!

Running 44:46 [2] 4.73 mi (9:28 / mi) +167m 8:32 / mi

It's been so cold running in the mornings! So I was a wimp and saved my run for midday - meant I could start at the top of the hill instead of the bottom too.

Anyways, used Tom's map to do a nice perimeter of the Lowell property. A few trails I hadn't been on before. Including a bit where someone has made mini-rockwalls in circles around all the trees...

Morning run, stomach not really up for it. And chilly! Frost out and a bout.

Christina Williams came up and gave a colloquium talk. Fun things about compact galaxies at high redshift- how did they get so compact? (And are today's kinematically decoupled cores in massive slow-rotating ellipticals their descendants? I would guess so...)

Still feeling the end of the cold and first workout at altitude, so I took it pretty easy.

Pre-wedding hike/run! Yay! So fun to get to do this on our wedding day. Veery windy at App Gap, calmer in the woods. Made it to Molly Stark's balcony, then turn around to go get spiffed up!
